KABUL (AFP) – Taliban gunmen stormed a UN guesthouse in Kabul Wednesday, killing at least eight people in a suicide attack as the Islamist militia signalled a bloody countdown to new Afghan elections next week.
President Hamid Karzai ordered an urgent security upgrade for international organisations after the rampage, which left at least five expatriate UN staff dead in the worst assault on the world body's Afghanistan mission since 2001.
The Obama administration and UN chief Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack, which the Afghan defence ministry said was the work of Pakistani Taliban dressed as police who struck the UN-approved Bekhtar Guesthouse before dawn.
Witnesses said the militants sprayed the hostel with gunfire and detonated grenades before blowing themselves up.
A UN spokesman in Kabul said five expatriate staff were confirmed as having died while forensic tests would be carried out on the remains of sixth person. The American embassy identified one as a US citizen.
Two security personnel were also killed, bringing the total death toll to eight, plus the three gunmen.
Another nine UN staff were wounded as gunfire and explosions rang out across the city in a smart residential district close to popular shopping streets.
Militants also fired rockets at the luxury Serena Hotel but no casualties were reported.
Officials said three gunmen entered the hostel in Kabul's Shar-e-Now district around dawn as the guests were sleeping.
An American contractor staying at the hostel said two of the dead were women and described scenes of panic during a more than two-hour siege.
"One suicide bomber killed one of the women just as she was trying to get through the fire. He blew himself up," John Christopher Turner told reporters.
Another woman was overcome by smoke from the explosions.

If Obummer, his two daughters and wife were there in Afganistan at a hotel, you know he’d only be there after the 44 thousand requested additional troops were deployed.
As it stands, he has no regard for the soldiers there who need reinforcements. Letting the troops who are already there, remain there without the needed 44,000 soldiers is Obummer’s way of flipping them all the bird. He cares not that we just had the most deadly month ever in Afganistan. He golfs, plays B Ball, whatever he likes. He’ll be remembered as the worst (fake) president ever.

I thought Federal Judge David Carter, a patriotic military man might rise to the occasion and allow the case to go forward but something has given him pause.
He took on the Mexican Mafia case without flinching and they are murderous.
This time around I wonder if his staff (possibly pro-Obambi) and coming under danger has become a consideration. this includes his Japanese Assistant judge, who may not have his courage.
Or - hope springs eternal - Judge Carter is sorting out some legal niceties and waiting for the right moment to do something. Perhaps choosing the best moment after the sinking Obamabi popularity drops far enough.
Or waiting for other cases like the - Attorney Mario Apuzzo in Philadelphia and the on-going Hawaii case demanding access to peripheral documents like filing fees and similar probative items which do not infringe on privacy, to ripen.
Carter's silence is heavy and to those who see our constitution trampled, our country being destroyed like prime beef steak being ground into chopped socialist hamburger with lots of added fat and gristle by Obambi, worrisome.
Actually, I think Karzai won the vote. But the UN and Obama are making trouble for him because he worked with Bush earlier.

Remember folks, the entire coalition to include the UNs could not find 5 helicopters to aid the mission when asked. The good news is the Russians are willing to help contain Iran with economic sanctions now that we have renege on the missile defense shield for Poland and Czech. Oh, wait a minute, they didn’t agree to do anything. Got to love our community organizer’s masterful poker skills.
