Also, good for South Carolina and the workers there that had the foresight and sense to get rid of the union.

You’re exactly right, the union shot themselves in the foot.

From Seattle Times:

Boeing picks Charleston for new 787 line

Seattle Times business staff

Boeing’s board has voted unanimously to build a second 787 final assembly plant in Charleston, according to a highly placed official of the Machinists union.

South Carolina offered the company $170 million in upfront grants for startup costs, plus multiple tax breaks that would be worth tens of millions of dollars more.

Once this plant is up and running more and more production will be shifted there. The company will increase profits and have a loyal and productive workforce that will be more than happy with its compensation. Look how well it has worked for Michelin and BMW.

Not anywhere as large as Boeing, but here in Nashville the
Peterbilt company has moved to Texas.

The plant is empty and the union is still on strike.

Expansion of the North Charelston, SC facilities

“Boeing Charleston performs fabrication, assembly and systems installation for the 787 aft fuselage sections. Across the street, Global Aeronautica, which is 50 percent owned by Boeing, is responsible for joining and integrating 787 fuselage sections from other structural partners.”

So basically, they already have a sizable presence there, but this is a major first in that they are setting up an entire commercial airline assembly line outside of Washington state from scratch.
You would think the unions would take a hint, but they never do.
I believe that after the last strike which caused a lot of flack from Boeings customers, and given the amount of orders for the 787, Boeing had to do this. Incase the unions in washington strike again, atleast the 2nd line in Charlotte, will be able to continue building 787 planes to be delivered. And I’m sure as the years go buy, Boeing will continue to expand Charleston, while shutting down WA work. And ofcourse, the unions won’t take the hint.

A couple of years ago NASCAR wanted to build a track in Kitsap County, an hour away from the Seattle elites, but who do they interview on TV but the elites who didn’t want “rednecks” in Washington. It was rejected. It would have been a much needed boon to Kitsap’s economy.

I have had a lot of contact with Boeing machinists up here in Seattle.
When Boeing went through a phase in the later 1990s of downsizing its workforce, I was a teacher at a school for adults in getting certified in Microsoft OS and Networking technologies.
Boeing actually gave this morons money to go get educated in something else (union demand nodoubt). So for about 6 months, most of my classes had a few machinists in my classes. I was shocked at how many of them were barely able to keep up with even the introductry information being presented to them. And the whole time, they kept asking about if we had unions in the technology industry. I kept trying to explain to them that there wasn’t and if working in tech, they would have to be masters of their own destiny. I’d get a blank stare back.
I heard many comments about how “Well that’s just wrong, and someone should organize something.”
They sat in the back of the classes browsing the internet and never involving themselves in the classes. If the classes had been on a grading system, all of them would of been getting D’s and F’s.
And from talking to them, they believed that this was simply a temporary thing, that the union would always take care of them, and they would soon be called back to work at Boeing again. Some said they would even wait years collecting unemployement, pension, severence, etc... and knew that they would eventually get back at Boeing.

I’m not making excuses for them.

Alot of those jobs are very specific, and highly specialized. If you’re a riveter, then thats ALL you ever do, is put rivets in metal.

I doubt your average machinist has alot of broad-based technical - engineering type knowledge.

The unions in Seattle shot themselves in the foot.

BINGO!

When they went on strike last year, just about when the s**t was about to really hit the fan, I couldn't believe it. Are these people nuts?

On Oct. 22 the Seattle Times had this article:

Secret talks have been going on for weeks in Washington, D.C., and Chicago between Boeing and the Machinists union, with top leaders negotiating over a proposed no-strike agreement that would ensure a second 787 final-assembly line goes to Everett instead of Charleston, S.C.

But less than a week ahead of a Boeing board meeting to discuss the choice, the labor talks are deadlocked and hindered by distrust on each side, according to a high-level person close to the negotiations.

It went on to say that the Union had "conditions". I guess the "conditions" were not met.

After that last strike, I remember hearing things about customers getting tired of the work stoppages at the plant. I agree with a previous poster: Boeing will not remain in the Puget Sound area.

I have come to believe that union members don’t think they were “hired” to do a job; but, that they were “adopted” by the company.

Hopefully, Washingtonians will finally realize what a lame, broke-back old nag Fraudoire is and put her out to pasture... better yet, the glue factory!!

I remember that.

I don't know how long it will take for the people of Washington State to wake up and figure out that the Democrat Party has been screwing them over for the past 30 years or so. I hate to paint the whole state with a broad brush since King County really "runs the show" electorally.

I visit Seattle annually (family). I would be shocked if King County ever woke up to that fact.

I understand this as well. But they would be very frank when asking about payrates for technology workers, and tell me how much they made at Boeing. I could not believe how massively overpaid they all were for the work they do and their massive entitlement syndrome.

I think it simply came down to this. Anytime a new plane model is about to begin assembly or the first delivery is about to occur, the unions like clock work make massive payroll and benefit increase demands, and if they don't get them, they strike. They know its the time when they will have the most power. You can set your watch to this. The strikes last year, which included the machinists and engineers, pissed off and spooked many frustrated Boeing customers. When the unions refused to a strike ban which would cover most of the years when the bulk of the current 787's on order were to be delivered, Boeing knew they needed a 2nd line in a non-union location to keep planes being delivered if the union goes on strike again. Oh and they will strike again.

Agree this is indeed tragic. Will these people ever wake up or is this confirmation that liberalism is a disease? I think the latter.

Sad for Snohomish Co, but completely predictable. Management is tasked with getting the best deal, least cost, most potential for making money for shareholders. Their choice was obvious.
