White House Blasts AP for Story Alleging Gov't Overstated Stimulus Jobs 'by Thousands'

Administration slams what it calls a "misleading" Associated Press story alleging the government significantly overstated the number of jobs created or saved under Obama's $787B stimulus program

The Obama administration on Thursday slammed a report from The Associated Press alleging the government had overstated by thousands the number of jobs it has created or saved with federal contracts under President Obama's $787 billion recovery program.

The White House seized on an initial report from a government oversight board weeks ago that claimed federal contracts awarded to businesses under the recovery plan already had helped pay for more than 30,000 jobs. The administration said the number was evidence that the stimulus program had exceeded early expectations toward reaching the president's promise of creating or saving 3.5 million jobs by the end of next year.

But the 30,000 figure is overstated by thousands -- at the very least by nearly 5,000, or one in six, based on AP's limited review of some of the contracts -- because some federal agencies and recipients of the money provided incorrect job counts. The review found some counts were more than 10 times as high as the actual number of jobs; some jobs were credited to stimulus spending when, in fact, none were produced.

Within minutes of the publication of AP's story, the White House released a statement at 12:15 a.m. Thursday that it said was the "real facts" about how jobs were counted in the stimulus data distributed two weeks ago.

"Tomorrow, more than 100,000 recipient reports will be posted on Recovery.gov," DeSeve said. "Unlike the small number of reports reviewed by AP, these reports have been reviewed for weeks, errors have been spotted and corrected, and additional layers of review by state and local governments have further improved the data quality."

The stimulus package cost American jobs. Millions of jobs. The amount of money spent could have created so many more jobs if the government gave businesses incentives to create jobs, instead of a bunch of wasteful government projects.

Created by politicians, reviewed by politicians, and approved by politicians. Yup, that certainly inspires confidence...

Right. Like when the democrats are losing an election in say, Minnesota, but after recounting and recounting a more ‘accurate’ result is obtained.

If we could just get terrorists to carry press credentials, Obama would let our military go after them. He seems to worry about reporters who might say something truthful but negative about him a whole lot more than he worries about people who want to kill Americans.

Perhaps the administration should review the statistics regarding initial unemployment claims reported weekly by the Department of Labor. See http://www.dol.gov/opa/media/press/eta/ui/current.htm

Since this administration came to power, the number of weekly initial (i.e. new) unemployment claims has been at least 500,000 per week or over 2 million per month. This means in the 9 months Obama has been President, over 18 million workers have filed an initial claim for unemployment. This doesn’t count people who lost jobs and were ineligible for unemployment compensation or workers who retired and whose jobs were not filled by employers.

The initial filing statistic is a hard measure of job loss that under reports the actual number of jobs lost. It isn’t an estimate or projection developed based on some assumptions.

Eighteen million jobs lost since Obama became President. It is a staggering number. Why is the opposition party not using the government’s own statistics to demonstrate to citizens the magnitude of the economic disaster being created by the no growth policies of the administration? If a Republican were President, Pelosi and Reid would be talking about the 18 million lost jobs everyday. Steele, Boehner, McConnell and every Republican elected official should be repeating this message every time they are in front of a microphone. Tell the American people every day the administration is wasting time on health care when the real issue is jobs.

I’m listening. Does the Republican party have a voice?

So it takes 3 reports to find one job “saved” ???????

Impressive.

Yes yes yes.

Eighteen million jobs lost since Obama became President. It is a staggering number. Why is the opposition party not using the government’s own statistics””

Why don’t they shout these numbers to every camera that swings thier way - in COngress, at Tea parties, at home, in Starbucks, in their free (to them) mailings ... ?????????????

Our country is in truly desperate straits — why does no one, besides Glenn Beck, say it? Broadcast it? Shout it ? Write it? Email it?

Where is the panic ???????????

It would be funny if it weren't so serious.

Obama and crew HOPE® all the stimulus money they spent on their liberal cronies will work and when it doesn't they CHANGE® the numbers to hide the fact they are incompetent boobs!
