A patient in a psychiatric center near the Massachusetts General Hospital stabbed his doctor this afternoon before being shot dead by an off-duty security guard, police said.

The physician is in stable condition, Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis said at a press conference this afternoon as he described a chaotic scene.
A relative said the victim was Dr. Astrid Desrosiers, a Massachusetts General Hospital psychiatrist who worked at the center. Isabellie Desrosiers, Desrosiers' sister-in-law, said she had been told by Desrosiers' sister that Astrid had been shot. Police identified the patient late this afternoon as 37-year-old Jay Carciero of Reading.
The actions of the security guard, who does not work at the hospital, were hailed as "heroic" by Bonnie Michelman, head of security for Massachusetts General Hospital.
"We're happy he was there," Michelman said.

so the shrink survived, eh?
Watch for the hospital, doctor, and security guard getting sued.
So,as a lifelong resident I say.....watch for the shooter to be criminally charged *and* sued in civil court.
I kid you not, boys and girls!
I’m shocked that a hospital that treats mental patients isn’t a “gun free zone”. Don’t they realize that the “off duty” security guard was ten times more likely to be shot with his own gun? It was probably the mere presence of a weapon in the building that caused the mental patient to stab the doctor in the first place.
I don’t share you view about guns, but the story does raise the question why the security guard was there in the first place. I don’t believe the story said he worked there.
Cured.
Universal Self Defense?
It is.
I know that building well.My Dad's ophthalmologist has his office there and we made many visits to him there.I don't know who owns it but it's within walking distance of Massachusetts General Hospital,Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital...three large health care facilities.I don't recall ever having seen any signs saying "no firearms" or having seen any of those screening things that you walk through. So,assuming the shooter had a license to carry, then there's no real reason for him not to have been there.
Yeah, I think that view is likely to draw a few bullets of it’s own on FR. (I haven’t checked back to see.)
can't carry in a hospital .... it's the law. or schools...or bars. Although many people do.
Well lucky for the doc he was there with his gun. Since he wasn’t working he was probably their to see another patient.
Hopefully, he wasn’t there to get treated himself.....
‘...watch for the shooter to be criminally charged *and* sued in civil court.’
Saw the local news last night on the tube, and you’re absolutely right.
It is not illegal to carry in a bar or hospital in MA. As weird as it may sound, a CCW in MA has very few restriction on where you can carry. Unfortunately unrestricted Class-A LTC’s are may issue and hard to get in many places.
It's not a hospital.It could well be owned and/or managed by a hospital,however(Massachusetts General...right down the street)...but I can't say for sure.
Hopefully, he wasnt there to get treated himself.....
As I think I said earlier, there were at least two types of medical offices located in the building....a large Ophthalmology practice (one of the biggest in the city) and that psychiatric clinic operated by Massachusetts General.I suspect, but am not certain, that there were other practices and/or administrative offices there as well.
