Two people were shot at a synagogue parking lot in North Hollywood today, police said. A man is reported in custody.
The shooting at the Adat Yeshurun Valley Sephardic Temple was reported about 6:20 a.m., said Los Angeles police Officer Cleon Joseph of media relations. A member of the synagogue tells KNX 1070 the shooting happened in the parking lot just as people were gathering at the temple for morning services.

Los Angeles police have detained a man near the North Hollywood synagogue where two people were shot in the legs.
Officer Rosario Herrera said she was unsure if the arrest was connected with the shooting Thursday at the Adat Yeshurun Valley Sephardic synagogue.
Police said a black man with a handgun entered the building at 6:19 a.m. and shot two Jewish people.
Police were investigating the shooting as a hate crime.
The victims, who were in their 30s, were taken to a local hospital. Both were listed in stable condition.
It was not clear how many people were in the building at the time.

Valley Villiage is a new name; used to be part of Van Nuys...I lived there and went to school there for a time...in the sixties, it was the most sought after High School in the area...many VERY famous and notorious grads...the town was a real nice suburb of LA...it is now, as is most of LA, pretty seedy, but there are still pockets of nice neighborhoods that haven’t changed at all...there was an old joke about Van Nuys...got it’s name from a New York Jewish immigrant who went west...came over the hill with his family, saw the Valley and said “I like it...it’s Van Nuys...” lots of Jewish residents in Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks (town next to it) with SO being more upscale...
I believe it is one of the better communities in the eastern San Fernando Valley north of Ventura Blvd.

North Hollywood is a very “Jewish” neighborhood. Many kosher restaurants, synogogues & Jewish owned businesses catwering a large Orthodox community.
But unless and until you know that he (or anyone else) is actually involved in the crime, there is no justification for associating that person with the crime.

I live nearby — heavily Jewish population, and in the area of the temple in question, mostly orthodox or hassidic. Many other temples in the area.
Homes in area are average in size but some are rather expensive —
The problem with parts of the San Fernando Valley such as this is that there are pockets of decent homes surrounded by main streets of predominantly older apartment complexes filled with minorities, often illegals.
Economy is BAD around here; unemployment very high — lots of petty crime going on in past six months though downtown denies it.
I doubt this was a hate crime — I think it was a jerk who figured he’d try to get some money from ‘rich Jews.’ Why he only shot them in the legs (report I heard) is unknown but it doesn’t sound much like a hate crime to me. Maybe the guy decided he wouldn’t be able to shake down a couple of guys since he was presumably alone, so just shot their legs and took off. Time will tell, eh?
