Arpaio for governor? Polls say he has the support

PHOENIX - Sheriff Joe Arpaio rarely keeps a low profile.

Never afraid of attention or controversy and always outspoken, he leaves little unsaid. And that includes a race for governor.

"There's an old saying in politics: Never say never," Arpaio said. "I know I would make an excellent governor."

Arpaio has not officially announced his candidacy, and he never may. But in recent weeks, he's teased and hinted. It's not the first time.

"Twice I've looked into it and had press conferences," Arpaio said.

If there are opinions that a county sheriff couldn't climb to the state's top spot, political experts say think again.

Arpaio is a political force. And everyone knows it.

"The sheriff is very popular," said pollster Bruce Merrill.

Merrill works for Arizona State University. He said anyway you cut it, Arpaio's numbers are strong.

"His (approval rating) is 65 percent positive, and thats about as good as it gets for most candidates," Merrill said

A poll came out this week that measured several state official's approval ratings.

Arpaio easily beat several other possible Republican candidates, and the only person who fared better was Democrat Terry Goddard at more than 70 percent approval.

At this point, other recent polls show Goddard wins big against any Republican.

But the Attorney General's name hasn't been tested against Arpaio.

"I have seen candidates like (Apraio) written off before, you have to be careful when you do that," Merrill said.

Arpaio is known largely as a one-issue candidate, focusing on immigration. But in politics, where the right topic and name recognition matter, one issue can be all it takes.

"I don't want to sound egotistical, but I know I can win," Arpaio said.

So will the Sheriff run? He said he's keeping his options open. And if he were to decide it would be by May.

If he doesn't, it's not because of a lack of confidence.

And either way, Arpaio will still likely be a factor. His staff said four candidates have already visited his office about an endorsement.

"I'm America's toughest sheriff," Apraio said. "It might take me two or three years to make me America's toughest governor."

In a country where the Baraqqi surge dominates SCM/MSM, Joe stands out as a beacon of hope.

If he wants to run for President with Joe Wurzelbacher as VP, he’s got my vote.

I would definitely vote for him (and I’m sure he’d win) but who would replace him as sheriff?

If not for residency requirements, they could take Peanuts Gaines (Warren Co., KY) for all I care if Arpaio ran for governor, and for that matter, I know a lot of my customers in a nearby county (Larue) would love to see Bobby Shoffner go away...

He needs to stay where he is. He is more effective that way.
I think that a lot of illegal alien supporters would love to have him run for Gov. Then he wouldn’t be enforcing laws related to illegal immigration anymore.

Stay Joe, stay Sheriff, please.

My point is that 78 is pretty old to be running for governor.

"I'm America's toughest sheriff," Apraio said. "It might take me two or three years to make me America's toughest governor."

Hey Joe, why don't you skip the governor's office and go straight to the White House. This country is in dire need of a "Take no prisoners" President.

At least with Lindsey you don't have to ask the usual question for homos "Do you want to pitch or catch?". I believe Lindsey always wants to receive.

“My hope is he be appointed as head of homeland security under Sarah.”

Not likely. According to Sarah, she is against workplace raids and deportation and supports McCain’s amnesty. We don’t have one GOP hopeful for 2012 that choses to follow the rule of law on immigration.

I'm hoping that was a position taken to align with the major candidate.

His approvals as Sheriff are high. The article makes no mention of how he’d do in the polls in an election for governor. Those polls have been done in the past, and he does remarkably poorly.

Basically, people think he’s a great Sheriff, but he should stay there and not run for Governor. Joe knows this better than anybody

Wonder how she feels after the little "incident" at Richmond High School the other day.

It's going to turn out that either all or most of the "yutes" involved are here illegally or are Anchor Babies.

Charming group of animals. Even the cops were shocked, and in Richmond that's saying a lot.

However, in her defense, she was obligated to toe the McCain line. It may not be what she believes, and I’m looking forward to seeing what she says now.

Joe is doing a great job. He is such a contrast to Polk County (Iowa) Sheriff William McCarthy. Allegedly McCarthy objected to illegal aliens being arrested because it "splits families up at the core." Somebody should tell him that sending criminals who are citizens to prison does it also.

Doesn't he know that the families of illegal aliens can go back with them - they are not prevented from leaving this country.

Take a look at this one, written by a Mexican. Sent out today by NAFBPO.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2374377/posts?page=4#4

Milenio (Mexico City) 10/29/09

“The importance of obedience” Full transl. of op/col. by Roman Revueltas, whose previous column appeared in the M3 Report of 10/28/09.

People throw out garbage. That means, we have to change the people. Imagine a country of very civilized people: people who don’t park their car in the middle of a cross street; people who take their turn in line; people who respect; people who do as they say; people who obey. Well, that country, of people who know how to behave, would be much more livable than another, for instance, where people do whatever they feel like doing without any consideration toward their fellow man.

Last week I was walking down the street and a fellow who was walking ahead of me stopped, picked up a plastic bottle dumped on the sidewalk and went into a store to put it in a waste bin. I waited for him to come out and congratulated him. I later thought that this is the way that all of us Mexicans ought to be. I ask you, then, to imagine a territory populated by orderly and reliable persons: almost paradise.

People usually follow rules for fear of punishment. This explains the colossal growth of criminality in Mexico due to the scandalous lack of punishment for the criminals: if you murder and nothing happens to you, well then, you kill again and you go on kidnapping. But, it’s not a matter of bringing up the death penalty scarecrow; it’s an issue of applying the laws, and nothing more. The great question is why is it that millions of citizens exist here who want to commit all sorts of infractions: throwing out garbage is a small transgression; ignoring a traffic light is a minor crime; assassinating a kidnapped child is a monstrosity perpetrated by a beast . Nevertheless, the common denominator of disobedience is present in all cases.

The more highly evolved individuals do not abstain from committing a crime for fear of jail but due to a clear conscience of what is right and what is wrong. Their personality has been structured based on moral values. That is precisely where our failure is as a society: Mexico is a jungle dominated by disobedient, quick tempered and irresponsible individuals, Calderon cannot change this. We change it ourselves.

They split their families by their OWN CHOICES. I really wish that the children born of people not entitled to be here would not be declared citizens. Just more of the PC stuff that the pro-illegals are doing here they are doing in your parts. IMHO, they are helping to ruin this country.
