I took a young man under my care when he was 16, gave him a place to live, helped him graduate from high school, even showed him how to look for a job. I helped him for 5 years.

If he had done what Davidson did, I’d want his lights put out. I’d consider him an evil bastard who wasted my time and took advantage of my help.

I think that whenever they put criminals on trial, they should be required to look EXACTLY the way they looked at the time of the crime! That would save a lot of taxpayer money, because the jury would make decisions a lot quicker!

And don't forget Jesse Dirkheising (spelling?) - the kid who was sexually tortured by 2 gay men and suffocated. His death happened approximately around the time of Matthews Shephered.

I wouldn't have never heard of young Jesse's death had it not been for Free Republic.

A lot was made of race on the Internet, but prosecutors and police have said race was not a factor, contending the carjacking that led to their deaths was random.

I think that the fact that this wasn't "just a carjacking" and that gruesome things were done to each of the victims and the length of time they had them before they killed them are all indications of racial hatred. If it was just a carjacking, they would have forced the victims out of the vehicle and either shot them or just left them where they took the car.

According to sources (Snopes and Wikipedia), Newsom’s penis was NOT cut off. The rapes did cause mutilation to both victims.

The death penalty and the method of execution should be appropriate for the crime(s) of which the person is convicted. Such appropriateness could be used to adjust the limitations of the “cruel and unusual” prohibition.

Another example of how ridiculous the concept of "hate crime" is and how unevenly it is applied. "Hate Crime" should be removed from law and the lexicon of speech.

So President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act, which by some weird circumstance also includes hate crime legislation.

Now, I'm no fan of hate. Hate, in all forms, is ugly, even when performed by beautiful people (that's a shout out to Stephanie Von Pratt, who turned me down for my senior prom). But here's what I don't get: if I kill someone, I'm a killer. But hate crime law says that I also broke a new law - one that has to do with my thoughts when I committed the crime. So it's a thought crime more than a hate crime.

Now, I'm not into semantics, and I can barely read, so I don't want to get too deep into this. But if I were to kill my co-host Bill Schulz, whether I hated him or not, that's a crime. But, if we find out later that he was a sequential hermaphrodite, one might say it could be a hate crime.

Now compare that to black on black crime. According to the Bureau of Justice, in 2005, murder victim rates for blacks were 6 times higher than rates for whites. In that same year, offending rates for blacks were 7 times higher than rates for whites. But according to hate crime law, all that black death means less because there was no bigotry behind it. To me, murder is murder, no matter the identity.

And, what of terrorists? Does the fact that they hate us make their crimes worse? Not to them - punishment is meaningless. Which is the real truth about hate, anyway. Hate crime laws won't stop hate, or crime.

Fact is, focusing on the killer's outlook diminishes the victim. It's no longer Bill Schulz is dead, but "Bill Schulz, the sequential hermaphrodite, is dead." Humanity should come before identity.

See, we need to see people as people, not as part of groups. We know bigotry is bad. But murder - in any form - is so substantially worse that it needs no footnote.

Because it's apparent that civility and justice is only necessary when liberals wish to cling to power.
