The White House warns that many names that may appear familiar — and controversial —do not in fact refer to the most famous people to carry those names. Jeremiah Wright is on the list, but it's not the president's former pastor. Michael Jordan is not the basketball player. This Michael Moore is not a filmmaker. And William Ayers, who took a group tour of the White House, isn't the former radical from Chicago. The White House could have avoided some of that sort of confusion by providing more information on the visitors, such as an employer name and the city they hail from.

For what possible reason could they release those names, knowing that people are going to make the connection? I think that this is a diversion of some sort, but a diversion from what I don’t know.

I admit I sign in to visitor logs using a famous celebrity name.
If I’m not mistaken, the information about whether a specific name appeared on the visitor rolls can be requested, but not a blanket request. So if a news organization requested to know if “William Ayers” visited the White House, and a certain William Ayers did visit the White House (even if not the one the news org had in mind), then that name would show up on the list. Clearly Obama and Emmanuel would not want that name to show up in either case but I think that is the reason it did.
