Obama Administration Eyeing Navy Brig in South Carolina for Gitmo Detainees, Sources Say

Sources tell Fox News that one scenario is that a "handful" of detainees who are already in the military courts at Guantanamo could be brought stateside as a "trial run" to test the system.

The Navy brig in Charleston, S.C., is "very much in play" as an option to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees for military commission hearings in the U.S., multiple sources tell Fox News.

Some sources describe the Naval Consolidated Brig -- which has housed at least two enemy combatants since 9/11 -- as a leading option being considered by the task force reviewing the Guantanamo issue.

The two enemy combatants who were held in the Navy brig were eventually transferred to the federal court system. Ali al Marri was sentenced this week for being an Al Qaeda sleeper agent, and the other detainee, Jose Padilla, was sentenced in 2007 to more than 17 years in prison on terror charges.

Sources familiar with the review tell Fox News that Undersecretary of Defense for Detainee Affairs Phil Carter was present during a site tour of the Navy brig, conducted in the late-September to early-October timeframe.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who supports closing the facility at Guantanamo Bay, said any plan must be thorough.

"Right now, I am not going to agree to have anybody sent from Gitmo for trial anywhere until we have a comprehensive plan," Graham told Fox News.

If military commission hearings go ahead in the U.S., sources tell Fox News that one scenario is that a "handful" of detainees who are already in the military courts at Guantanamo could be brought stateside as a "trial run" to test the system.

South Carolina? OUR South Carolina? That would be a really, really stupid move on the part of the Obama administration.

Why? We can stow them away at Lindsay Graham’s house.

Pandsay can tap toes with the inmates and we get a place to keep them. It’s win-win.

South Carolina is a strong “red” state, so Obama figures he wouldn’t win that state in his 2012 re-election campaign. So he figures it won’t hurt his re-election.

No, it would be typical.

They’ll stick those anti-American, violent Islamofascists right in the face of those patriotic Americans who dare to elect true conservatives.

That’s the point of it.

This is part of the nudging to try to get patriots to over-react.

The people of Charleston should do a little research concerning the impact of prisons on communities. Families, friends and associates come to area to be near imprisoned for possible visits/contact. Released prisoners tend to stay nearby because family, friends and associates are close by. Whole area goes to hell, ultimately becoming a cess pool

Problem is they have a weak governor, otherwise I can see the state police, governor, etc. on the border refusing entry. That would be a total nightmare for Obama. Good Americans standing up against having terrorists warehoused among them. Nope, Bambi would get the worst of that confrontation.

Let’s see can’t keep them at GITMO, yet we can keep them in a Navy brig in South Carolina…uhm, proving once again “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder.”

Only in the Clown Universe does such make sense, I guess Bobo is attempting to slide his compatriots into America to preload his civilian security force.

Huh? The brig must be at Naval Weapons Station. The Navy base closed and converted to commercial cargo like 10 years ago did it not. Last time through there I saw a buch of RORO bulkships tied up.

This sounds a lot like when Carter sent the criminals from the Mariel Boat Lift to Arkansas. Clinton felt it cost him his governorship and blamed Carter for years.

Aou, lived in Rochester for a while, can say I was actually outside working when the temperature was calculated at 99 below; so hard to just breathe in. Anyway, that would be a bit cruel, having to listen to and put up with all the whining and noshing of teeth, wringing of hands and overly concern enemies foreign and domestic. I have a bitter idea, how about we just run them through a General George S. Patton style military field trial then execute them and send their remains home. Instead of providing subsidized salaries for “friends of government,” the monies could be put to better use such as employing real people to do real work; like building a new school, a hospital or repairing pot-holes on America’s infrastructure.

Build a facility dead center in the Everglades and they could try escaping “Papillion” style...which would never happen. Heh, heh.

I can see the state police, governor, etc. on the border refusing entry.

They would fly them to Charleston AFB and then give them a 10 minute SUV or 3 minute helo ride to the Navy Consolidated Brig.

Something tells me that the GOP in SC will not let this happen. If it does happen, I feel sorry for those Sailors and few Marines that have to guard these vermin.

That’s perfect! Then they can all get jobs at the, non-union Boeing plant. Why blow up a plane mid-air with a shoe bomb when one can sabotage it while it’s being built?

Hey shipmate, you might want to dial-back the rhetoric a little. I have lived here for 16 years since I left the Navy. You would be hard-pressed to find a population of people that is as friendly, honest, hard-working and conservative as those here in SC.

Graham was towing the conservative line until he started breathing the rarefied air of the senate and hanging out with McCain & Kennedy. Now he has money and the backing of the media & Democrats, he will be very tough to remove.

Gov. Sanford was the model fiscal conservative, he was putting the screws to the RINOs in the SC House & Senate on a daily basis. Halfway through his second term he apparently lost his mind and took-up with his Argentinian mistress. If he could run again he wouldn't be reelected.

Also, Jim Demint & Joe Wilson. Nuff said.

Navy brig in Charleston is used only to house prisoners awaiting trial. Once they are convicted prisoners are transferred elsewhere. Any Gitmo prisoners transferred to Charleston must be awaiting trial as the facility is accredited to house only these types of prisoners.

In the case of Jim DeMint, absolutely correct. In the case of frigging queer Pandsey Grahamensty, absolutely wrong. And we're stuck with the SOB until 2014 :(.

NO MORE RINOS.
