Pope: Moral Values Provide Basis for Vigorous Society
Zenit ^ | VATICAN CITY, OCT. 30, 2009

The Pope said this today upon receiving in audience Delia Cardenas Christie, the new ambassador of Panama to the Holy See. In his address he underlined the "irreplaceable elements that create a healthy social fabric and build a vigorous society."

Specifically, he referred to the "defense of such primordial aspects as commitment to social justice, the struggle against corruption, the endeavor in favor of peace, the inviolability of the right to human life from the moment of conception to its natural death, as well as the safeguarding of the family based on marriage between a man and a woman."

There is NO such thing as a ‘social gospel’, except in liberalism. The Ten Commandments are not ‘social’ rules. God told Moses to put down what would be IF the peoples turned their individual or collective backs on His commandments. And starkly in print is the world today.

Agree. IMHO at the root of every problem we face is a violation of one or more of the Ten Commandments.

The church has the obligation to address moral issues based upon the teachings of Scripture, such as that life is sacred and begins at conception. I have no idea what the “social gospel” is, but it sounds closer to Marxism than Christianity. There is only one Gospel, and that is about the Person and work of Jesus Christ for our salvation. Doing good works is not the Gospel. There is a passage in Scripture in which someone wanted his brother to share his inheritance with him, and he wanted Jesus to make him. Jesus said to him, “Who made me a judge?” I understand this as Jesus saying, keep me out of worldly debates, and don’t make me into a political figure. I wish that the Church would follow Jesus’ example and stop making Jesus into a politician.

"The Ten Commandments are not ‘social’ rules."

Actually they are.

The first three pertaining to our relationship to God the remainder pertaining to man and his relationship to his neighbor. i.e. "social".

"Doing good works is not the Gospel."

What?

Jms:2:15-17:

" If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone."

The Gospel is the free gift of salvation through the active and passive obedience of Christ. Doing good works in not the Gospel. It is law. The law tells us what to do or not to do. The Gospel tells us what God has done for us. I’m surprised that you do not know this, for it is the very foundation of the Christian faith.

"The Gospel tells us what God has done for us. "

It also tells us what WE have to do for Him:

Mt:19:17: "And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

The Gospel is not the same as the law. The Gospel is what God has done for us in Christ Jesus. The law tells us what we are to do or not to do. A failure to understand this will only lead to works righteousness and uncertainty. Since our righteousness is as filthy rags, there is nothing that we can do to merit or to earn our salvation. Everything that we do is tainted with sin. If my salvation is dependent upon good works, then I will never have the assurance of my salvation. My salvation is from beginning to end a gift of God for the sake of the Christ Jesus. We are saved by grace, not by works, lest anyone should boast.
