Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich: The Visionary and the Hack

By Claude Sandroff

Two weeks after Sarah Palin's unique exit from public office, Newt Gingrich offered up some unsolicited counsel for the former governor in an interview with POLITICO. Apparently, Newt was certain that Palin's reputation needed serious burnishing, and he was all too ready to provide it by offering substantial details on the range and style of speeches that would be most appropriate for Palin to deliver to various audiences in order to sustain a public revival.  Exactly why he felt she needed his help remains a bit of a mystery, except that Gingrich, like Karl Rove, seems absolutely certain that the world is always on edge awaiting his next tactical stroke of genius.

Now that an intense internecine battle is raging over how Republicans should react to Doug Hoffman's Conservative Party bid for New York's 23rd , one thing is certain: it is Newt whose reputation is in shambles, and it is he who should seek political advice from Palin as to how he might regain his lost stature. And this will remain true whether Mr. Hoffman wins or loses.

By unconditionally supporting the Republican machine candidate Dede Scozzafava -- one of the most liberal candidates ever offered by the party in any race -- Newt has forfeited any remnant of respect he might have retained as the standard-bearer of the conservative congressional revolution of 1994.

Scozzafava supports the same extreme political positions (card-check, Obama stimulus) as any adolescent left-wing blogger. She maintains deep alliances with the most radical and odious groups (Acorn, Working Family Party) associated with the Democratic Party. By standing with her, Newt Gingrich has earned that dreaded label he once affixed to Nancy Pelosi. Newt has become a partisan and trivial politician. He has become a common hack.

In contrast, Sarah Palin just compiles conservative esteem. When she railed against the compromised Republican machine in its support of Scozzafava, it felt like a stiff, clean, purifying breeze. In her October 24th Facebook Note announcing her support for Hoffman, Palin argued with deep philosophical references to conservative ideals. Her support and conviction were not products of a focus group.  The note moved many a radio talk show host who read it aloud, from Mark Levin to Tammy Bruce. It was the reasoned stance of a visionary.

Palin evoked Ronald Reagan, mentioned the importance of establishing sharp contrasts with opponents, and stressed the primacy of principle over party. Palin continues to be the antithesis of the trivial politician.  She has that unique ability to convey the highest sense of personal honor without ever projecting any of the usual political pomposity. Perhaps the highest compliment we can pay Palin is that she is always interesting and always surprising.

This is the reason so many political junkies from the right and left have undisclosed part-time jobs as Palin observers. You can never get enough of authenticity. Near the end of her farewell speech, Palin promised that by removing the confining yoke of office she'd be able "to work even harder for you. For what is right. And for truth."

What she meant by those almost biblical cadences wasn't clear then, but now it is coming into focus. And what is most stunning is that she is attaining her goals not by speaking in front of audiences, but through her writing. We all know how mesmerizing she is on the stump. But none of us had any idea that she was a gifted prose stylist: succinct, witty, and memorable.

But she has chosen Facebook, not YouTube, as her preferred mode of communication, at least for now. And over and over again, she has proven highly effective and influential, whether discussing health care, energy, China policy, defense, or congressional elections.

It's an effectiveness gained through focus, a focus that we can only hope other politicians begin to emulate. Free markets, individual liberty, small government, strong national defense, and low taxes are the constant themes she invokes. Along with those values, she makes constant mention of the two political giants of the 20th century who embodied them, championed them, and communicated them tirelessly: Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.

While pundit after pundit argues that we should throw Reagan over the side in pursuit of Obama-lite, Palin is bringing us back to the principled, universal roots that Reagan shared with the Founders. While many columnists anguish over immoderate candidates, Palin warns against "blurring the lines" and writes a Facebook birthday tribute to Margaret Thatcher.

A recent Gallup poll shows that in America, conservatives outnumber liberals by two to one. We know from history that conservatives can win landslide elections. But conservatives need to be confident to be resurgent. None of us knows what Sarah Palin has in mind for 2012 and beyond. But if she is the force that helped us regain the confidence of our convictions, then she will have given us a gift beyond repayment.

Don’t care who Palin endorsed. I don’t particularly care for her as a presidential candidate. She is the anti-manhood candidate. She can cook, do laundry, give birth to 5 kids and still look hot, raise those kids, even have a kid with special needs. At the same time, she can be the governor, run for vice president, and endure hours of interviews with Greta, and write a book. With someone that is so superwoman like her, what the hell are men needed for??

To answer the call to follow when it is not the time for men to lead. We are in this economic and political situation in no small measure because of how women voted for the left.

She is the anti-manhood candidate.

Interesting. I've heard similar comments from other men who seriously lacked confidence in their own manhood.

Our military men and women seem to like Palin, and instinctively respond to her as they would to a natural leader. Military people understand the importance of this; others might not.

I know that this has little to do with the article's focus on Sarah Palin (a thousand showers of a million blessings be upon her), but I just have to say that it delights me no end, every time I see the above statement.

Get it, people. There are TWO of us to every ONE of them. We have no reason whatsoever to be meek in demanding that this country return immediately to sensible conservative governance, and an adherence to the Constitution.

WE are the majority, NOT the treasonous left, who are incomprehensibly in power at the moment. We must, and I believe that we will remove them from power soon.

The NY-23 congressional race is a wind sock that has shown which way the wind in this country is blowing, and it ain't to the left, baby.

The Bible tells of a time of the Judges of Israel. One of the judges was a woman named Deborah. Why a woman? No man had the guts to do the job. When men get wishy washy, God still has a plan.

Not that Sarah Palin is a single mom, she isn’t. She has a wonderful husband who has his own work to do. Their entire family has recognized that some things are bigger than them individually. This country is in serious need of a principled leader and most of the men in politics in this country are not up to the task. Palin’s family has made a great sacrifice to let Sarah do what she does. Someone has to do it and God has let that person be Sarah.

With all the garbage people who have tried to destroy her have thrown at her, don’t you for one minute imagine this is easy for her. She could have laid down and submissively given up her principles, just like Newt and other men who’ve been attacked by the elites in this country, but she didn’t.

You’ve stated in the past you thought she was finished. I guess that was just wishful thinking on your part. Really she’s just getting started. You and the Newtsters of the world should get used to it. God willing, she’s going to be around for a while.

just mythoughts, we’re thinking a like tonight.

Newt annoys me. I’ve never really liked him.

That said, it is both arrogant and ignorant to call the man a “hack.” What he did during the Clinton era was downright brilliant, and he deserves respect if only for that.

I will vote for Palin in a heartbeat. However, she’s not ready to withstand a national campaign until she (and her supporters) can handle a little criticism from allies like Newt.

Alright Mr. Man. Get out there and show us that you can out-do everything that Sarah Palin has done, thus far.

You let us know what office you're running for, and pitch your platform here on Free Republic for all to see.

You man enough for that, or are you just running down the finest patriot this country's seen in a generation?

You know, I never thought of this before but using writing instead of speeches and public appearances is probably the smartest thing she's done. Her "image" has been attacked and the left has been attempting to trivialize her by basically mocking her appearance. It's pretty hard to mischaracterize and mock written ideas.

It's not actually incomprehensible, except if you look at the deeper, wider picture. I'm coming from a philosophical angle there. The questions run deep as to why Americans ever allowed this terrible, and near-catastrophic state of affairs to develop in the first place.

Yes, I know all of the fundamental reasons why, and can put the crazy jig-saw together by memory, but there's always the lingering question --- why did the good and the strong ever allow this?

Don't mind me. I'm just pondering imponderables. Carry on.

Furthermore i believe when she becomes President we will witness a participation of the populus not witnessed in my 50 years of life. In the back of my mind i like to believe she will confront the issue of term limits, get us all engaged to pressure our representatives and make it a reality./I guess we all need our little something to hold on to.

I’m not sure such criticism of him is warranted. Like a lot of dads his job kept him away from home a lot of the time. It’s difficult to leave a job that pays well and is what you have always done, to ride herd on your children. Many families have dads who ride herd on their sons and daughters and there are still problems.

I am not criticizing your criticism, just looking at the situation from a different angle!

What a strange viewpoint. She is no feminist man-hater, she doesn't believe that "a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle." She loves men and happily includes them in her life. She obviously loves her husband. Why should her intelligence, hard work, and wide-ranging competence be a threat to men? She's not anti-manhood, she's an inspiration to men AND women.

As for Sarah as a presidential candidate, she has some hard work ahead of her to repair her MSM-tarnished image, but I think she has a good chance of success.

As the father of a teenage girl, I would be grateful for your advise on exactly what methods to use in order to keep a teenage girl away from a teenage boy.

I’m not certain of the precise timeline regarding the Palin child, but I’m pretty sure that the girl was 17 or 18 when she conceived, an age when people are considered adults, or nearly so, all over the world. Had she been, say 14 or so, then we might have some room for some real criticism. As it is, it’s none of our business.

It’s true that the child was conceived out of wedlock, unfortunate to those Christians among us, but hardly unusual today. I’m pretty sure that Mr. Palin was at least disappointed when he first heard of her pregnancy, but only because she would have to change her immediate plans in life, not with his daughter. At least that’s how I think that I would feel.

If you have no sin in your life, if your family is a paragon of virtue, then pick up a rock and let it fly. If not, maybe you ought to stay out of other people’s personal affairs, and leave the family alone.

Newt did a lot of good early on. He helped lead the way for republicans to control both houses of congress and then he along with the other republican “leaders” squandered that lead by spending like drunk sailors on shore leave.
He like most politico’s who spend too much time in D.C. come to believe their own press clippings and get inflated ideas of their self worth.
Newt is just one such.

Looking back over the past year, I see only one man left in the Republican party—Joe Wilson. The rest are panty boys.
Newt Gingrich is the corrupt media’s choice for GOP candidate 2012, as phony war hero milquetoast McCain was in 2008.

Good to see Gingrich crawling at the feet of Mrs. Palin, where he belongs.

So when has she not handled any criticism launched her way? If you use her stepping down from her office in Alaska, you are some serious need for a lesson in critcal and deducuctive reasoning yourself.

She had accomplished all of her campaign promises before she resigned. She had also accomplished what other Alaskan politicians were unable to get off square one for more than 30 years in securing the deal for the gas pipeline to boot.

What followed the VP run was an ever ending stream of bogus ethics complaints that was keeping her from doing more work for the citizens of her state because by law she had to answer each of those complaints in court. She realized this and her answer was to take the sting out of the bee. If you doubt that, provide me the list of the continuing ethics complaints being filed against the new governor.

She was able to handle a national campaign when asked to run for VP. The problem was that the McCain campaign was not and this truism will also be on display in her book. The title for her book came directly from her hello statement to calling in on the Glenn Beck show when she finally got fed up with the campaign handlers horrible advice. The truth is that campaign may have done more to steel her intuitions than any other experience in political life may have had a chance to holding a candle to.

So with that statement you have done little more than to identify yourself as a “hack” who is oblivious to the ingrdients of the sauce when commenting on how it looks. Bon Apetite!

The huge mistake Gingrich, a very smart man, and every Washington insider makes is their belief that since they know lots of facts and have numerous contacts with other liberal insiders, they are far more qualified to lead than someone like Palin...whose knowledge of international facts and the goings on in Washington was minimal before she was selected as McCain's veep choice.

What they don't understand is the most important thing to be a good leader is to have a conservative frame of mind and the backbone of steel to stay the course. That's what Reagan had, and that's what Palin has. All presidents, even Reagan, compromise at times. But you compromise your principles too much, and you lose your soul. Apparently Newt has forgotten that.

Unfortunately, I fell for Newt’s line of B.S. earlier this year. It seemed like he was saying the right things through AMERICAN SOLUTIONS.com, but it was a ploy for him to seek relevance. He started questioning his choices and re-evaluated the base and wrongly concluded that the Tea Party movement was short lived and retreated back to the Big Tent Graham Cracker RINOs, who want to tell us what is best for us. Too bad for Newt,... any semblance of respect and cover are now gone for this poor, old spent cog in the old-style political machine. Sorry Newt, you suck!
