A changed race Owens is best-equipped to represent NNY

Dierdre K. Scozzafava's decision to suspend her campaign for the 23rd Congressional District seat is a shocking development in what had already been an extraordinary race.

In her statement Saturday morning, the assemblywoman explained the reasons behind her decision: "It is increasingly clear that pressure is mounting on many of my supporters to shift their support. Consequently, I hereby release those individuals who have endorsed and supported my campaign to transfer their support as they see fit to do so."

During the day Saturday, she began to quietly and thoughtfully encourage her supporters to vote for Democrat William L. Owens.

Ms. Scozzafava finished a distant third in the latest Siena Research Institute poll with 20 percent support of likely voters. Her opponents, Mr. Owens and Conservative Douglas L. Hoffman, garnered 36 percent and 35 percent respectively.

Scozzafava trying to sink the Conservative after realizing she can't win. What were the Republican leaders thinking when they gave her the nod??

Like we all thought, she was never a republican in the first place, the woman deserves a public takedown.

Well, just when I was starting to respect her. I guess her ‘class act’ act didn’t last very long.

Is she or isn’t she telling people to vote for Owens? Looks like they have nothing concrete to point to other than innuendo.

They say she she released a statement to her followers and in the next paragraph give a blatant advertisement for Owens. Trying to make it look like that is what her statement said.

Her statement may have said it but this article is misleading at best.

The very fact she didnt immediately and publically throw her support to the conservative real republican tells you all you need to know

Well, The Watertown Times endorsed Owens so maybe they are doing a bit of projection. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Scozzafava supports Owens over Hoffman though. She is closer to Owens in political ideology.

What a liar and cheat.

Sounds like she was nothing but a Democrat plant from the start. Incredible that the GOP biggies were taken in by her.

Well, they were taken in by the Democrats promises to cut taxes and spending back in 1986. Guess it’s no surprise.

Good news is that Owens is probably a weak candidate. Scuzzofava was the one slated to win.

My thoughts, too. I wonder - if true - whether her possible sour grapes endorsement would change anything.

And your source of this "news" is an editorial?

Got a credible source for this other then an editorial by a leftist editor who backs Ownes?

“Sounds like she was nothing but a Democrat plant from the start.”

I think there are many of these that we are turning a blind eye to. I truly believe that there are elements on the fringe left who have a long-term vision for how to use our system against us. If anyone believes that a Manchurian President is a possibility, then its certainly a lot easier to envision plants for Senate and Congressional office.

What were the Republican leaders thinking when they gave her the nod??

Because Republicans and Democrats are just two different costumes worn by the same political entity when they stage their biennial puppet shows, and they will always work together to stave off a challenge from an outsider. Just because a few lonely conservatives in Congress continue to struggle bravely on wearing the "Republican" label doesn't mean that the label itself is worthy of conservative voter support.

Big gov, big tax, big debt Democrats have more in common with slightly less big gov, a slower big tax, not so much today big debt Republicans than either does with Conservatives.

So she’s telling her supports to vote a Democrat instead of for a man (Hoffman) that she had gone to great lengths to say was not much different than her on key issues.

This is interesting...then just who are her supporters? I suspect they are the friends of her union-boss husband. And then why leak this info to the newspapers?

I now suspect that she knew publicly endorsing the Democrat would have been the kiss of death for him, as it would have VINDICATED what we have all been saying - which, in effect, is that the left somehow got hold of the Republican Party up there and was going to shove their candidate down our throats.

We had no choice here.

NYS GOP is an acronymic oxymoron.

And with Upstate NY turing into a freaking ghost town, sure let's keep doing more of what's brought us to the brink.

SNORT.

Scofflaw and the GOP would rather the dems win rather than concede any power to conservatives or a possible third party. If you can win the election, do what you have to to protect our monopoly on the system.

So she’s telling her supports to vote a Democrat instead of for a man (Hoffman) that she had gone to great lengths to say was not much different than her on key issues.

I dont want to assume this without better evidence. This editorial is so slanted I would not put it past the writer to have made this up. Notice that there is no direct quoting of Scozzafava.

It's interesting to read the comments posted at the website. They are overwhelmingly critical of the editorial and very pro-Hoffman.

I think he's got it clinched.

I hear you, but I doubt that they made this up...and if they did make it up, then why doesn’t she deny it - after all, this is the biggest newspaper in her district.

Fifteen minutes later, I learned that the so-called quiet encouragement was actually a formal communication to her supporters.

Now I have all the evidence I need that it is true... I can think of a few other adjectives to go along with that.
