SHERWANGI, Pakistan (AFP) – Hundreds of foreign fighters were on the run in this battle-scarred region near Afghanistan Sunday, the military said, pressing a major offensive into a third week.

Between 600 and 800 foreign militants had been in around Kanigurram town but their resistance was broken by heavy bombing from jet fighters, helicopters and artillery, Brigadier Mohammad Ihsan told reporters on a visit to the normally closed conflict area.

Commanders have described Kanigurram as a major Tehreek-e-Taliban "operational centre" and base for Uzbek fighters.

"They are on the run," Ihsan said.

The foreigners were mostly Uzbeks but also Chechens and Arabs, he added.

They may have made a strategic withdrawal but the military is prepared for any guerrilla attacks the militants may mount, Ihsan said.

Analysts say Uzbeks are the largest group among foreign Islamist militants backing Taliban fighters in Pakistan. Pakistan's 'desperate' Uzbek fighters far from home

Pakistani forces on October 17 began their offensive in South Waziristan to clear the area of "terrorists".

The district is part of a lawless tribal belt on the Afghan border where US officials say Al-Qaeda and their allies are plotting attacks on the West.

Around 30,000 troops are taking part in the offensive against an estimated 10,000-12,000 militants in the semi-autonomous region.

I know this is an "emergency", but isn't Obama campaigning hard this week?

Can't this wait until Wednesday or maybe Thursday?

Tonight they are offering an excellent Apache compliation, a delightful sprinkling of mayhem and destruction, administered with elan and style, true professionals. Peace work neatly done. Reasonable rates. Call for a quote. Brings a tear to my eye and makes me proud, not for first nor for the last time, to be an American.

Barak the Faker will take credit when the Pakistanis defeat these terrorists. Can you just hear the media now?

"After President Obama put pressure on the Pakistani government to take serious action against the Taliban a series of Pakistani military operations were successful in defeating and killing many Taliban. If President Obama hadn't been so adament on this crucial issue these Taliban would still be around to kill American soliders" - Associated Press.

During Operation Mountain Storm in 2004, the Pak Army went in with 80,000 troops, and made it thru Kaniguram north all the way to Razmak. Opposition melted away from head to head fighting just like now.

But trying to keep the lines of communication open between Kaniguram and Razmak bled the Pak army over time until they pulled back out. Just like the Brits back at the turn of the century. The Kaniguram fighters make some of the best steel on earth, and according to old Brit pilots, one guy with a rifle seems like ten with machine guns, due to accurate fires at high volumes. They can fight, and armies are afraid of them, with some justification.

You are seeing a demonstration. Pakistan stages them any time the question of their US funding comes up. The powers that be are willing to spend troops lives to secure that funding.

They will push into the FATA, just as they have before, and they will regularly publicise apparant successes, quite loudly at times, but they will not base large numbers there over the long haul, and they will not push regular patrols into the numerous mountain passes that control the heart of the Shawal Valley, and they will not endure the political and violent opposition necessary to implement checkpoints, not long enough to have real effect.

They are not up against just Taliban/AQ here, the people that live there have enjoyed relative freedom from national government for centuries now, they are of similar mindset as the Taliban/AQ, and they have beaten some of the greatest military’s on earth to defend that freedom, in the recent past and in the distant past.

Don’t get your hopes up too high, this is probably just another iteration of deja vu.

Certainly there is a history of such dog and pony shows. This campaign is different I think, a response to the attack on the Pakistani army HQ that targeted senior Pakistani generals. Burying dead generals gets their colleagues attention .
