BERGENFIELD A 37-year-old Bergenfield mother of three stabbed her 8-year-old son in the stomach with a steak knife Saturday morning because she thought the government was planning to take away her children, police said.
The woman, Elida Marroquin, then attempted to take her own life, turning the knife on her neck and abdomen.
...after interviewing Marroquin and her husband, police learned that Marroquin, who does not read English well, feared her children would be taken from her after receiving several letters from her son and 12-year-old daughters school during the past several weeks.

Other versions of this story (http://www.kionrightnow.com/global/story.asp?s=11423022) note that the "letters" included a "progress report" (formerly known as a Report Card) and a form for a field trip.
Why are Hispanics acting like Moslems??
“Gotta love that Hispanic culture that makes mom think the best thing to do in this situation is to kill her own flesh and blood, and then herself.”
Thankfully, no English speaking American mother has ever murdered her children.
What a sh***y way to live. Illegal, scared and ready to kill your children for the crimes you’ve committed.
I don’t think this is part of the hispanic culture.
The ignorance part maybe is, but the murder part...not so much.
Look at the Mexican drug gangs. Look at the MS-13 gang from El Salvador. Look at the many violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants in the USA.
The bloodthirsty violence is part of their heritage and it goes back more than 1000 years. Primitive people with a taste for violence.
Yeah, I said it.
Touche, we have seen more Susan Smiths than we would like. But the problem here was the combination of the Hispanic culture’s long psychotic conflation of love and death with this individual’s refusal to assimilate and learn the language. The story I link to notes that, a day later, they are still trying to figure out what country she’s from.
You got that right. When I hear stories like this, I feel just a bit smug about being a man.
I’ll quibble with you just a little. You don’t need to know much Spanish to pick out both “muerto” / “muerte” — dead / death — and “te amo” — I love you — frequently in the traditional music on American-Mexican radio stations. Lots of Romeo and Juliet stuff.
Self fulfilling prophecy.
Most of their “music” I have heard in passing, sounded more like Polka music than anything else.
What the hell does this have to do with Hispanic culture?
Is child-killer Susan Smith typical of Anglo culture? How about Jeffrey Dahmer?
A tragedy in New Jersey, thanks in part to the politically correct immigration laws we have. The school letters didn’t help matters, it seems.
Are you at all familiar with European history? The Greek wars? Roman Empire? I think you’ll see bloody wars and conflict and ‘savagery’ in all civilizations and places.
The father told her the letters had nothing to do with taking the children away. She’s got some serious mental illness on top of her refusal to learn the language of the country she lives in. I’m sure he told her in Spanish, but crazy is crazy, and doesn’t absorb cues from reality well.
Now she's going to jail and we will feed her sorry ass and those of her children and their many fathers.
really? are they in general? i hadn't heard...
hahaha!
hahahaha! oh brother...
hahahahaha! this thread is bringing a lot of guffawing over here... the music i loathe is "banda" music... sounds like circus crap... however, i do like the "polka" stuff... and the cumbias and rancheros...
For sure! Just think Salem, MA. You only have to back 400 years or so. Primitive people with a taste for violence! I spit upon their heritage.
Why do you assume these folks are Hispanic? I saw nothing in the story that mentioned their country of origin.
Well, now the government WILL take the kids away, and for good reason. How about learning ENGLISH and adapting to American society like everyone else did who became decent productive Americans??
The proper term, which I have learned from an eminent post-racial president, is "typical white persons."
Something about living in primitive cultures and being too arrogant to assimilate.
Now that is threatening to this illegal alien (wonder how long she's lived here that she cannot communicate, she certainly is aided by the NEA in "language help" and paid translators.)
haha! i don't know... maybe it's a cultural thing... i have to say, i grew up watching The Lawrence Welk Show... it is kind of funny to hear polka music with Spanish words... sometimes when i hear mariachi music with the violines, i am reminded of pieces of Mozart...
“Parents, we’d like you to know that Sloppy Joe Wednesdays are being switched with Footlong Fridays. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
“WHAT? THEY’RE TAKING YOU FROM ME? DIE! DIE!”
hahaha!
Well, I should admit, I'm not really smug. As men have committed a disproportionate number of the nation's and the world's murders, this year and throughout history, I obviously have to be ashamed of and embarrassed about my culture. ;)
“Thankfully, no English speaking American mother has ever murdered her children.”
Huh?
The gap between sarcasm and the person who didn't get it.
You are experiencing Sarchasm.
It turns out I made a one in a million lucky guess based on the last name: http://www.nationwideg.com/marroquin.htm
But without a last name, the combination of “is not able to read English” at age 37 and “authorities are still trying to determine what country she’s from” would lead me to the same conclusion.
Unless it’s an obvious Hispanic name, I don’t jump to those conclusions. We have immigrants from every nation on Earth, and some even with Hispanic sounding names are NOT Hispanic.
The music reminds me of a circus coming down the street.
What a sad story. I’m glad the 8yo child survived, thanks to his quick-thinking older sister. But, what a horrible ordeal for him and his siblings to go through.
I love a sick sense of humor.
You’re not wrong.
You should, those nasty Brits(and they were Brits at the time)had a terrible history of killing off suspected witches, either by hanging or burning.
