I'm writing this in West Africa where I have spent eleven of the last fourteen months working with compassionate, dedicated, and brave people on humanitarian programs designed to save lives and alleviate human suffering.
During the past five years, I have traveled to the Eastern Congo where the deaths of millions of people have gone largely unnoticed by the rest of the world, been to Darfur, responded to famines in Ethiopia, helped end a measles epidemic in Burkina Faso, and been deployed to Guinea Bissau in response to a cholera epidemic. I am currently focused on helping people affected by flooding and extremely high rates of child malnutrition.
Thus, when I hear the advocates for illegal aliens talk about the about the hardships faced by illegal immigrants who come largely from countries that are far better off than those in West Africa, I have to wonder what their true motives are.
I wonder why supporters of illegal aliens show virtually no concern for the hundreds of millions of Africans who live in countries with exceptionally high child mortality rates and the lowest overall life expectancies in the world.
For example, why is there so much focus on the plight of citizens of Mexico who have a life expectancy of 76 years, as opposed to the citizens of Liberia who have a life expectancy of 42 years? And why do we only hear about the problems of Latino children when the child mortality rate, education levels, and overall health of African children are many times worse?
Why don't liberals demand diversity and affirmative action in illegal immigration rather than supporting a system where well over 75% of all illegal aliens are from a single ethic group (Hispanic) and where 61% of illegal aliens come from just one country (Mexico)?
Why don't compassionate conservatives call for a path to citizenship for Africans from the 17 countries where per capita income is less than three dollars per day, rather than favoring illegal aliens from Mexico which has an annual per capita income of $14,200.
Why do America's religious leaders support legalization of people who have violated United States immigration laws and who routinely commit multiple, job-related felonies that cause serious harm to millions of American men, women, and children rather than advocating for a path to citizenship for highly vulnerable Africans who are playing by the rules?
Why do La Raza, LULAC, and other Latino groups support comprehensive immigration reform that so clearly discriminates in favor of citizens from Mexico at the expense of much more desperate people from Africa and even from Latin America?
Why do women's organizations support the legalization of millions of illegal aliens from a relatively small number of Western hemisphere nations rather than providing a path to citizenship for girls and women throughout Africa who are the victims of systematic rape and who have some of the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world?
Is it because Africans are not part of the right ethnic group or race?
Is it because people from Africa don't look like the people in the most rapidly expanding minority group in the United States?
Is it because La Raza and LULAC see illegal immigration as a means of increasing their power and influence?
Is it because Africa nations don't aggressively support illegal immigration in the same way that Mexico does? Is it because mainstream religious organizations, including the Catholic Church and the National Association of Evangelicals, believe that illegal aliens from Latin American will more readily join with them than will people from Africa?
Or is it simply because the advocates for illegal aliens are racists who discriminate against the majority of the world's people?
I'm sure the proponents of illegal aliens will take offense at these questions, but put yourself in the place of millions of hard-working Africans who would be more than willing to the "jobs Americans won't do." What would you think?

People throw out garbage. That means, we have to change the people. Imagine a country of very civilized people: people who don’t park their car in the middle of a cross street; people who take their turn in line; people who respect; people who do as they say; people who obey. Well, that country, of people who know how to behave, would be much more livable than another, for instance, where people do whatever they feel like doing without any consideration toward their fellow man.
Last week I was walking down the street and a fellow who was walking ahead of me stopped, picked up a plastic bottle dumped on the sidewalk and went into a store to put it in a waste bin. I waited for him to come out and congratulated him. I later thought that this is the way that all of us Mexicans ought to be. I ask you, then, to imagine a territory populated by orderly and reliable persons: almost paradise.
People usually follow rules for fear of punishment. This explains the colossal growth of criminality in Mexico due to the scandalous lack of punishment for the criminals: if you murder and nothing happens to you, well then, you kill again and you go on kidnapping. But, it’s not a matter of bringing up the death penalty scarecrow; it’s an issue of applying the laws, and nothing more. The great question is why is it that millions of citizens exist here who want to commit all sorts of infractions: throwing out garbage is a small transgression; ignoring a traffic light is a minor crime; assassinating a kidnapped child is a monstrosity perpetrated by a beast . Nevertheless, the common denominator of disobedience is present in all cases.
The more highly evolved individuals do not abstain from committing a crime for fear of jail but due to a clear conscience of what is right and what is wrong. Their personality has been structured based on moral values. That is precisely where our failure is as a society: Mexico is a jungle dominated by disobedient, quick tempered and irresponsible individuals, Calderon cannot change this. We change it ourselves.

If you knew something about Latin Americans you would know the there is a very nasty racist attitude against blacks in that part of the world. The mestizos get dissed by the pure-Europeans so they take it out on the Indians and blacks.

We need to cut the number of ALL of them. I think the author was drawing the obvious comparison...WHY are the biggest percentages accepted from Mexico?? THAT is certainly not diversity.

The Tea Party, 9/12, and Immigration Enforcement movements all reflect the views of a vast majority of Americans. Yet, all of our movements will fail if we do not unite to seek real change in 2010. Poor Africans aren’t a big Democrat voting block. It’s that simple.
There are several very calm facts of life here.
The first is that innumerable efforts have been made to try and improve the lives of Africans. But Africans have consistently proven themselves incapable of improving their own lives, even with this help, and regularly instill and return to power leaders of low character, who exercise tyrannical control, and are oppressive to other Africans of different tribes, factions, and political groupings.
If a people are determined to oppress and enslave others, for whatever reasons, fleeing oppression and enslavement by their enemies warrants little sympathy from others. They must change their own behavior at home before they will be welcome in the homes of others. If those of good character would just band together, they would have little need to flee Africa.
Even a small number of those of good character could have considerable success, were they to likewise demand good character from others. This is a foundation of civilization.

The racism aspect of this is irrelevant. There is a huge demand for illegals, Hispanic illegals are available in great numbers, and they’re right next door.
There are two major types of Hispanic illegal alien advocates.
1. Democrat politicians who want to increase their voter constituency.
2. Labor intensive business interests (agriculture and construction) typified by the Neoconservative WSJ editorial page, who want their cheap labor

I’ve often wondered the same questions this article poses. We need immigrants from all over the world, not from just one culture. That’s why they refuse to assimilate. And if we’re going to help someone, let’s help those who will appreciate what America has done for them.
