Dolan gives the Times holy hell: Hits 'anti-church' op-ed
New York Post ^ | November 3, 2009 | DAN MANGAN

New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan has condemned The New York Times -- blasting the Gray Lady and its columnist Maureen Dowd for what he says are examples of unfair, prejudicial and just downright mean anti-Catholicism.

Dolan used his blog last Thursday on the Archdiocese of New York's Web site to rail against the Times a day after the paper refused to print his critique as an op-ed piece.

He singled out Dowd -- a poison-penned, Pulitzer winner and former Catholic-school girl -- for "the most combustible," "intemperate and scurrilous" "diatribe" she wrote on Oct. 25, which "rightly never would have passed muster with the editors had it so criticized an Islamic, Jewish or African-American religious issue."

It’s about time the Times is made to pay with the cost of its reputation for its anti-Catholic, anti-Christian bigotry and hatred.

Why do “former Catholic School” people seem to attack the church. This can be looked at as a failure in the schooling (and perhaps it is), but after subbing at a Catholic School for a while, I have a different theory.

All people must choose their path, and no education offered can change that. People who have had a religiously based education and then reject religion appear to do so with much intensity. Like Satan himself, they are not content with simply walking away. They must destroy the thing that reminds them of their failings.

Maureen Dowd is realizing that she is a failure (and maybe regrets not being a mother); she is lashing back at herself for not really hearing what her religious educators were trying to tell her. She realizes that her life is empty in spite of her material possessions and prizes. What a shame!

And that is why Maureen Dowd threads on FR inevitably attract Catherine Zeta Jones pictures ... Michael Douglas rejected MoDo for CZJ ... and had kids with her.

It seems to have put MoDo over the edge.

Wow..that was a pretty broad brush you just used...and equating those who grew up catholic and have since left the church with satan himself is downright unfair. I grew up catholic...went through all the ceremonies and even was confirmed. The rituals in the church, though lovely, left me wanting more of God. I wanted more than just rote prayers and symbolic gestures and rituals...which is all I ever saw in church in my youth. I left the church in my late teens...(this was shortly after my sister (14) was assaulted sexually by a visiting priest.) Church had been a big part of my life up until then...I was left disillusioned with the hypocrisy of the this man and those who chose to cover up his crime.

I wandered through life for a while wondering about God and this whole catholic thing...thinking as I was taught that I was going to hell because I no longer was in “the church”. I was condemned, according to what the church had taught me...I lived like a condemned person...with no hope.

Then one day I actually opened the Bible and read it..the whole thing...I found out that all the rituals and all the ceremonies and all the rote prayers were not what God required of me. All the posturing in church..the kneeling, standing, sitting nonsense was not what he required. (I found out there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.)

What he required of me was a repentant, contrite heart...not just feeling sorry at Saturday night confession and 3 hail Mary’s and I was good to go. He was calling me to a deeper walk with him. He required prayer that was from my heart...not prayer from memory (blathering away something someone else wrote). And He wanted me to hear His voice...not just talking to him ...but hearing back as well. Wow...that floored me...that the God of the universe wanted a relationship with me!! I decided to give my whole heart to God...I cast off the rituals and the ceremonies and got into the Bible and into prayer. I have never looked back.

I do not hold anything against those who choose to stay Catholic...it is their choice...but for me and my experience in the church...it just wasn’t enough. I want all I can get from Him. I speak to him everyday..and I do not need a priest to absolve me of my sin...I take it directly to the Father and he is faithful to forgive me. He hears me... I have rejected “religion” and have replaced it with a personal relationship with him. For me the trade was worth it...I do not belong to satan..nor do I do his bidding.

I think you're right. Also, they know deep down inside that they're wrong (as did Satan), so they need to crush any trace of the thing that reminds them of this.

I don’t think you’re the type of person he was talking about! For one thing, you left because you were profoundly shocked by an evil thing that happened, not just because you wanted to do your own thing and were annoyed that the Church was making you feel guilty about it. Most people who Sample was talking about leave because they want to pursue some kind of evil (frequently sexual) and they have a real hatred of the Church for simply existing because it confronts them, even while they reject it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Dowd has had abortions and this is the thing that is giving her a guilty conscience. But your case, and that of many people, is different.

Wow Archbishop Dolan lays it out on the line. That comment about criticism of other faiths and cultures not being criticized for PC reasons is right on the money. He sounds like Mark Steyn or David Horowitz, and he is exactly right.

The Bible says to receive Holy Communion..”Do This in Memory of ME”....nowhere does it say you have to have a catholic priest give it to you.

I take communion on a regular basis...with a church family of believers.

He had a very poignant story laying out the exact purpose and nature of Jesus and in one sentence just showed you totally missed it.

Oh...and it wasn’t just one bad priest...it was a conspiracy of priests...who allowed a 14 year old girl to be sexually assaulted and told her to keep her mouth shut...so as to not give the church a “black-eye”...our parish priest’s exact phrase. He defended the man who did it...said he was old and not in his right mind...etc. My parents were counseled by him to not press charges against the guy..that he would take care of it...put him in a place where he wouldn’t do anymore damage..my parents bought that line of crap...but we found out later he was back in his own parish immediately and stayed there with his filthy hands handing out the Eucharist until he died 3 years later. My parents were counseled to never mention the incident again...and they didn’t ...so my sister was left with that pile of crap to deal with...without the help of anyone. And years later when my sister went back to our parish priest to seek his help in dealing with her pain...he told her “just forget about it...it was all in the past”....A priest...we were taught, was a representative of Christ here on earth....my sister still has a problem with God...can you blame her?

Archbishop Dolan might want to change what he has said. Instead of calling Maureen Dowd anti-Catholic it would be more appropriate to call her a Christophobe.

"...my sister still has a problem with God...can you blame her?"

Dirty little secret, you don't need a bureaucracy between you and God. I pray she finds a way to reconnect with God. I know I'll be flamed by all of the "my way or the highway zealots," but I've seen God's miracles happen hundreds of times with no church involvement.

Yes......"Forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us".

EVERYONE has to answer to God for actions taken.......EVERYONE.

I agree....I see some glimmers of hope..we have talked a lot about what happened...now that she is older and more open to it. I have witnessed to her about the power of God to heal...not just physically...but healing the whole man...emotions etc. I see it happening...but it can be a long road. She hid it for years...the pain is buried deep....But God can do ALL thing...nothing is impossible for him...even restoring the brokenhearted.
