Canadians favour Prince William to become king

Canadians favour Prince William to become king Published Tuesday November 3rd, 2009 Poll | Prince Charles not as popular A7 The Canadian Press

OTTAWA - A new poll suggests the majority of Canadians would prefer to see Prince William become King, not his father.

The Canadian Press/Harris-Decima poll, released Monday, asked 1,000 Canadians about their thoughts on the Royal Family.

Forty-one per cent said they would rather see Prince Charles pass off the throne to William rather than succeed Queen Elizabeth himself, while 31 per cent believed Charles should be King.

Doug Anderson, senior vice-president for Harris-Decima, said it was no surprise to see how popular Prince William is among Canadians.

"But in terms of whether it's worth skipping natural monarchy progressions in order to have the more popular prince as the next King, I was a little surprised by the preference there," he said.

Anderson said Charles has had such a "roller-coaster" of a life in terms of public respect and appreciation while the 27-year-old William has had almost none of that.

"All things are sort of working well for William and have been for some time," he said. "But in terms of preferring to see him become the next King over Charles, it says to me that some people are saying, 'Let's go with the more popular ...'

"William has almost none of the negatives that a lifetime can throw at you, so it wasn't surprising to me that people like William so much."

The respondents were evenly split on the importance of the monarchy with 45 per cent suggesting it is an important part of Canadian history and culture while 44 per cent believed it is a relic of our colonial past.

Regionally, Quebecers were twice as likely to say the monarchy has no place in modern Canadian society while a majority in all other regions believed it should be maintained.

In Ottawa, Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe said Monday he supports getting rid of the monarchy, calling it "a system of the past."

"This is something archaic," he said. "I would call it a genetic lottery. It makes no sense.

"If you ever got blue blood, go see a doctor very fast."

What part of Sharia law is that? Shouldn’t the UK be preparing to join the Caliphate?

When will Canada stop pretending like they are still part of the British Empire?

It’s all about tourist dollars and a lack of hardcore national identity.

If the Queen’s on your money, it tells me something.

Elizabeth II and I are the same age.

She seems to still be going strong, as am I.

William may be 47 by the time this issue arises.

The Royals aren't dumb. Keep the public happy, and the public'll keep footing the bills. My ancestors bugged outta Britain in the 1600's. They weren't big on royalty, but whatever floats yer boat :)

America is a republic. We are a constitutional monarchy. The Queen is just as important to us, as the republic is to you folks.

elcis? LOL! Just kidding!

I'd not mind seeing Prince William succees Queen Elizabeth II. He seems like he's pretty level headed for a man of his age.

Not to mention he's a bit more like his late mother than Prince Charles.

Of coarse, what do I know? I'm just a Yank anyway LOL! Well, part Canadian so I guess that makes me sort of QEII'S subject.

When will people stop desiring a ‘king’?

That,s a good question.

It seems strange that people would grouse about being under the rule of a monarchy so much so that measures are taken to overthrough that monarchy.

Then the people start whinging that they want a King or Qeuun to rule them again. Or, if not that, they become fascinated with a monarch of another country.

I really don't get it.

And British royalty today are mere tourist attractions and nothing more. They have no say, no power, no nothing. They're just "special" people in nice clothes...nothing more.

And people care that one special person will be appointed king over another special person.

No wonder I drink.
