Dog's Eco-footprint a Hummer
The Seattle Times ^ | 11/02/09 | Mark Rahner

Thanks for killing the planet, dog owners.

Well, that's a rough paraphrase of a New Zealand study that claims a medium-size dog leaves a larger ecological footprint than an SUV.

In "Time to Eat the Dog? The Real Guide to Sustainable Living," authors Robert and Brenda Vale argue that resources required to feed a dog — including the amount of land needed to feed the animals that go into its food — give it about twice the eco-footprint of, say, building and fueling a Toyota Land Cruiser.

This is eco-BS. And yes, I know that’s being redundant.

Maybe we should get rid of all the wild animals also. How about the American Eagle?

They should keep talking...

This kind of warped thinking will destroy their “movement” faster than anything. Animals, like human beings, are part of the planet and the ecosystem. (rolls eyes)

I, on the other hand, have just as scientifically determined that an environmentalist from New Zealand has about 1/100 of the value to the world that my Aussie Sheepdog has. And given the choice guess which one gets eliminated to save the world?

I can attest that my dog contributed mightily to global warming last night, which resulted in her being kicked out of the bedroom.

If we get rid of ALL life on earth, that should help reduce a lot of things. Then Mother Earth will be happy!

Y’know, the animals wouldn’t BE pets, if they didn’t have OWNERS. I suggest the authors of this tripe prove their sincerity by allowing themselves to be beaten to death in a pit filled with organic compost. . .

(evil grin)

Don’t forget the Lactose intolerant in this country. These “Silent-but-deadly” bunch are reaping an incredible amount of eco-detruction upon the planet.

Obama should design a poo-gadget that attaches to them and ASSesses taxes based on the amount of destruction they dump in our atmosphere.

I agree that it is eco-BS but there is a certain footprint for everything...a toothpick, a tomato...I just happen to think that it is all in the circle of life.

If we didn’t have dogs in our homes they’d be roaming wild and eating. If they were wild the ecofreaks would argue that they were on the verge of extinction and we’d have all kinds of programs and costly regulations to save them that would have a much larger carbon footprint.

Always remember, when talking ecology that in their minds, people are the enemy, the cause of all devastation. But we are an integral part of nature as are dogs.

Considering that dogfood is made mostly of the parts of livestock that you and I won’t eat, I see my dog as more of a co-conspirator.
