RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - It's Election Day and polling places across Hampton Roads and all over Virginia are busy with the hustle and bustle of people checking in to vote.
This morning, some voters in Suffolk hit a registration snag when they appeared in the electronic poll log as absentee voters.
Voting officials said a few voters had to visit the registrar's office to confirm they were not registered as absentee voters. Voting officials then started cross-checking the electronic log against the paper poll log, which had correct voter information according to voting officials.
It seems if voters registered to vote last year with absentee ballots, the electronic log had them voting again this year absentee, officials said. The paper log, they said, has current and accurate information.
Virginians will elect a new governor Tuesday. Races for lieutenant governor, attorney general and the House of Delegates are also on the ballot.
Republican Bob McDonnell and Democrat Creigh Deeds are competing to succeed Gov. Tim Kaine, who is ineligible for re-election under the Virginia Constitution. The race is being watched nationally because it's one of only two gubernatorial elections this year.
Democrat Jody Wagner is challenging Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, who is seeking a second term. Two Fairfax County legislators, Republican Ken Cuccinelli and Democrat Steve Shannon, are running for attorney general.
Sixty-nine of Virginia's 100 House seats are contested.
Polls close at 7 p.m.
COME ON MCDONNELL!
Wondering that myself. I wouldn’t put it past these cockroaches.
I bet the absentee's have already been sent in (ACORN).
Does that mean that absentee ballots were automatically mailed?
I had to laugh when I saw an obit (for the mother of a friend) that mentioned her POLITICAL affiliation! I wonder if anyone voted for her today.
Now the results on that should be interesting too.
That explains what happened this morning. Voted at Nansemond River HS in Suffolk. At least 3 people in front of me showed up as having voted absentee. They wrote their names on a list, but as far as I could tell did NOT stop anyone from voting.
What?? You mean you can’t vote absentee, then vote at every polling place in your district too? How do you expect any Democrats to get elected under those rules? < /sarcasm>
When I voted on at Lunch, I was asked for ID. So that is a good sign. Also, turnout was low, I was voter number 218 and I think 2000 to 3000 people voted last year in my district.
The election official who checked my in this morning did it so fast that she didn’t activate my card.
The election official sitting next to her caught it and had her do it again.
Don’t know if it would make any difference, but it was unnerving.
My district is predominently GOP.
The only problems I saw at our polling place, was some of the pollsters where a bit to close to the building. They were asked to step back by the official.
This is super. I was amazed that only the Democrats have a problem with requesting an ID in order to vote; as if producing an ID were somehow intimidating to (illegal) voters. You have to produce an ID in order to buy a beer at a bar; to use almost any credit card at any store, to make a deposit at the bank, to purchase a car or firearm. If not to make illegal ballot stuffing more difficult, what other reason could there possibly be to oppose having the voter produce some form of Gov't issued ID?
This is getting old. We can put a man on the moon but can not figure out how to register and count votes???
I don’t think either party wants this problem solved, otherwise it would have been done a long time ago. One would think in the ACORN-era that the GOP would want to solve this as a priority.
Maybe they are asking for IDs only in GOP leaning districts.

Could be, my district is pretty red, but down the road is one of the Virginia Tech Districts and they are pretty blue, both are in the same County.
I grew up in NYC and we had mechanical tabulators going back to the 1950's. You pulled a lever to cast a ballot and when you pulled the big lever to open the curtain, the levers reset and your votes were added. There was no paper trail, but no one ever challenged the system or questioned its accuracy or fairness. They worked like adding machines, were easy to test and verify. The machine itself was sealed after the election in view of poll watchers from both (or more) parties.
The Dems like paper ballots because if you torture them enough, they'll confess to anything. And you can always make more, if you need them. Electronic ballots may be more efficient, but would not inspire confidence.
Doubtful...Suffolk is classified as an “independent city” (not within a county), although it’s suburban-to-rural. Even if the Rats claimed every vote in Suffolk, it won’t be enough to put their statewide ticket over the top.
On the other hand, there are some tight races for delegate in nearby Virginia Beach, pitting (D) Joe Bouchard against (R) Chris Stolle and (D) Bobby Mathieson against (R) Ron Villaneuva. Both Bouchard and Mathieson have pulled out all the stops against their opponents and waged vicious, nasty campaigns. With Bob McDonnell expected to turn up big margins in Hampton Roads (he’s from Virginia Beach), it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Dims pull some sort of electoral stunt today, in an effort to keep Bouchard and/or Mathieson in office.
The places to watch for voter fraud are Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Portsmouth. The Dims need every vote they can manufacture in those areas. However, with Democrat turnout in northern VA reportedly low, it’s probably a lost cause.
