'V' aims at Obamamania
Chicago Tribune ^ | 11/03/09 | Glenn Garvin

Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care.

The news media swoons in admiration -- one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: "Why don't you show some respect?!" The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader's origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: "Embracing change is never easy."

That’s what I thought the first time I saw a promo. They have the whole hope/change thing down pat. It’s made me want to watch it, which I probably would not have otherwise. It should draw a huge audience. Obviously all the conservatives will “get it” I only hope the rest audience is smart enough to take their blinders off and see the “charming” similarities.

James Carville may be one of the lizard aliens. He's always looked and sounded like an extraterrestrial to me.

The original V was terrible. It did have hot girls for its time though.

Was it only the 19 episodes of the series? Then closed off by “V:The final battle?”

I couldn’t find the ending on the line up.....In the description the 19th episode seemed to leave some open issues.

The constant catfighting between the two female aliens in the original series was a delight to watch too.

Did you say "catfight"?

Every time we’ve seen the commercials for the new series, we always laugh, because it’s SO like Obama, and his minions.

According to the trivia on IMDB, regarding the original “V” miniseries... The original premise that was pitched to the studio was that “V” would actually be set in Germany in the 30’s, and in fact be about the rise to power of the Nazis and the fascist takeover of Europe.

It wasn’t until later and more review, especially in light of the then recent blockbuster success of Star Wars that the show was re-pitched as a science-fiction story allegorical to the rise of fascism.

Interesting, I thought.

Right down to his war on Fox, when the hot alien says to the reporter, “You will not ask us tough questions” or whatever. I thought that I read that ABC was startled that it looked like an Obama slam and asked them to tone it down, but I might have just dreamed that.

They played V:The Movie (which was the 4.5 hour mini-series that started V: The Series), now they are showing the 19 TV episodes that comprised the series itself, and at 4pm ET I think, V:The Final Battle mini-series that ended it all will end the two-day V marathon.

“James Carville may be one of the lizard aliens.”

...and your response:

“If he is, his disguise sucks.”

...made me smile.

'V' aims at Obamamania

I haven't seen it yet, but may have just become my favorite show.

So, does that sound like anyone you know? Oh, wait -- did I mention the leader is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who's come here to eat us?

Wow, that really does sound like Obama.

I think the comparison is incidental (if not outright providential)

in that the V series was about a fascistic group taking over society and ruling it as the Nazis did Germany and their conquered lands.

There wouldn’t be any parallels to 0bama if 0bama wasn’t a fascist and if his administration and movement weren’t fascistic.

Maybe it’s time to update the Obama-Joker poster. Could some Photoshop wiz out there make an “Obama-space lizard” poster?
