Police are searching for a man who tried to rob an off-duty police officer at gunpoint Tuesday morning, provoking a shootout near the intersection of Beach and Westminster boulevards.

Around 6:48 a.m., a robber approached an off-duty police officer who was using the ATM at the Chase bank at 14041 Beach Boulevard, said Lt. Kevin Baker of the Westminster Police Department.

The robber, described as a 5-foot-8, 160-pound man wearing a blue hoodie, pulled out a silver handgun and demanded cash, Baker said.

The police officer pulled out his gun, and the men fired at each other, Baker said. The officer fired six shots.

Police are searching the area for the robber, who ran off westbound through the parking lot.

No ambulances were sent to the area this morning. Police did not immediately know whether the robber was shot.

Police found parts of a disassembled handgun shortly afterward in an alley just west of Pacific Avenue, on the shopping center's west side.

pulled out a silver handgun

With silver running over 18 bucks an ounce he should have just sold the gun.

"Police officer needs to spend time on the shooting range"

Perhaps a more dynamic training exercise needed?

An ATM was shooting at a robber and a cop?

Time to ban ATM’s I guess.

Standing right next to each other, he fired six shots, and he missed? Yes, a little time on the firing range is definitely indicated.

“Police officer needs to spend time on the shooting range”

Perhaps a more dynamic training exercise needed?”

A box a year seems not to have been enough.

Still, the outcome was:
1. Good Guy with no holes in him.
2. Bad Guy condition unknown.
3. Robbery thwarted.

The robber, described as a 5-foot-8, 160-pound man wearing a blue hoodie..

Must be millions of people there that fit the description, unless, for some reason that isn’t being reported, it could be narrowed down..

Yeah, considering the victim was a police officer trained in observation, the description of the perpetrator is pitiful.

I frequently use an ATM to make deposits and one of my biggest fears is that I will be confronted by someone who thinks I have gotten cash and won’t be happy when he discovers I just put all my money IN!

I try to park as near the ATM as I can since I frequently make the deposits when the bank is closed. I got a $250 ticket one time for parking in a handicapped space while I ran up to make a deposit. My wife was waiting in the car in case a handicapped person came along and needed the space. Not very likely since it was 7 AM, there were two other handicapped spaces right beside the one I was in and there was not another car in the huge parking lot. The silly enforcement officer pulled in behind me after I got back in the car, blocking my ability to back up and leave. He hops out, leaving his driver’s side door open, runs up and bangs on my window. Had I had a gun I probably would have shot him on the spot. He gave me a ticket because I dared tell him how stupid it was to behave like a robber and to do it when someone is returning from an ATM.

It’s sad, isn’t it?

I read that a police officer fired six shots and immediately think, “Oh, so no one was hurt?”

Just sad.

My Dad used to collect receipts from several 7-11 stores in Manatee County Florida and deposit them. My Mom would ride along with a .45 automatic in her lap. She took firing practice every Saturday morning on the Police Range. Dad carried a .38 in an ankle holster. They both had concealed carry permits.

The few and rare times we use a ATM, Mrs ASOC works the machine while I stand facing out, with hand in jacket pocket. Seems to work for us.

FWIW, Alaska does not require a permit to carry concealed - now, aren't you all jealous?
