The Afghan election is over and fortunately the Taliban did not wreak a bloodbath on voters as they had promised. However, they still caused quite a bit of carnage with suicide bombings in Kabul. As you probably know by now, the runoff election was cancelled when the contender, Abdullah Abdullah, dropped out of the race in protest, calling the election fixed. This can't be helpful to anyone except the Taliban!
The Karzai regime was already discredited due to charges of widespread corruption, but Abdullah calling the election a farce has really got to drop his popularity. In truth, Afghani's were not excited about voting for either candidate! Abdullah and Karzai were considered losers. Voting under the threat of death for the lesser of two evils probably would have had a pathetically low turnout. (Almost as bad as a typical City Council in Chico.)
Remember, Obama committed an additional 17,000 US forces to Afghanistan only last February and now he's being asked to send 40,000 more and he's stalling. If he chooses to send the 40,000 troops as requested the cost per soldier could be a staggering $500,000 per soldier! That's right, the Pentagon is estimating it will cost another $20 billion a year, which is about a billion more than the entire GDP of Afghanistan in 2008. Spending $20 billion a year on a country where the men earn about $30 a month and 99% of the women don't earn anything doesn't pencil out for a lot of people here.

Obama desperately wants out of Afghanistan as is hunting feverishly for a way to bail out and haul ass while protecting his. Mark my word once a strategy is found that will give Bambi cover, we will be gone faster than our boys can pack...
then why can't we claim Obama “discredited” as corruption in his administration is far greater than Afghanistan, IMO.
You got my vote on that. Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton are looking like they were great presidents about now.
But then again, this guy is a full fledged Fascist who only cares about destroying the great Satan called America.
We messed this up from the beginning. The right answer to 9/11 was never for us to try to peddle the founding fathers incredible wisdom to a bunch of islamic bronze age primitives.
What i think should have happened was a short, and fantastically violent, response. Something so intense that the entire world took a very sober lesson from it. Then withdraw quickly in good order, before that lesson had time to be diluted.
No NATO or UN should have been consulted whatsoever except to warn them to remove any personnel they had in the war zone.
I think I know what you have in mind, and it is what I think should have been done: a demonstration project in Waziristan, and then to let them know that we have more from where that came from.
We should then have taken the Saudis to a room and let them watch the video, and told them the terms on which we would buy their oil.
You may remember that they thought we would bomb them, as they well deserved it.
Instead we have allowed them to build the largest mosque in America in Boston, larger than the biggest church there, and with underwriting of the land costs by the city.
We have allowed them to spread their hate through underwriting of schools of Middle East study at all the major universities.
We have allowed them to have editorial contol of American textbooks that proslytize Islam.
We will live to regret that we didn't go "Hiroshima" on them.
If you have the power to exterminate everybody, I don’t see the problem?
