Posted on 11/03/2009 10:29:38 PM PST by AKSurprise
Gay-marriage opponents are claiming victory in a closely watched referendum in Maine on a new state law that would have allowed same-sex couples to wed.
The law in question was passed by the Legislature in May but never took effect because of a petition drive by conservatives.
With more than 84 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday, the side seeking to repeal the law had 53 percent of the vote. Their campaign organizer, Frank Schubert, claimed victory and declared that Maine voters had helped preserve the institution of marriage.
Gay-marriage supporters refused to concede, holding out hope that that the tide might turn as the final returns came in. They had been hoping Maine would become the first state to approve same-sex marriage at the ballot box.

Doing the happy dance out here in California. Way to go, Maine.

If only Washington State voters rejected our “everything but marriage” nonsense.
Let's hope this cripples the homosexual agenda and results in more states passing laws protecting marriage between a man and a woman, including in the state of Iowa.
Now they have to vote out the homosexual lobby controlled legislators.
Conservative values are re-emerging as USA values.
About damn time, too!
Enjoy your short lived victory you know this will go all the way to the Supreme Court. Alternate lifestyle folks will not give up until all they win.

I wonder if the queers are going to go on a three week hissy fit like they did in California.
Hope the gayshirts don’t show up to do violence to those who voted against “gay marriage.”
I assume the plan is to derail this in court now that the people have spoken.
Get a judge to overrule the voters.
The headline should have read “traditional marriage prevails in maine”.
Alternative lifestyle freaks are not winning! State by state
traditional marrige is winning. Zer0 has no clout. Why board a sinking ship?
On to the pusuit!
Fire all the Legislators
Who voted for this...
At least something has gone right in Maine. I’m reasonably happy with dumping gay marriage in ME, VA and NJ governorships although it would have been good for Hoffman to win in NY-23. Hopefully a conservative will take back the seat next year.
Paging Mr. Olsen! Paging Mr. Boies! Come to Maine; we need an election overturned. Peasants refuse to accept what we say is good for them.
