'Gaza rockets can now hit Tel Aviv'

Israel's military intelligence chief has warned that Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip have successfully tested an Iranian rocket that can reach Tel Aviv, the Jewish state's largest urban conurbation. That adds a new urgency to Israel's efforts to develop an effective defensive system capable of shooting down short-range rockets that, if the warning by Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin is correct, are becoming a strategic threat.

Yadlin says the rocket has a range of 37 miles, 8 miles longer

He did not identify the Iranian system, but there have been reports that Iran has been seeking to smuggle Fajr-5 (Dawn) rockets into Gaza to give Hamas a longer reach.

The Fajr-5 is an artillery rocket developed in Iran during the 1990s and is fired from a mobile launcher. It has a range of up to 50 miles.

In January Israeli officials claimed Hamas had acquired dozens of Fajr-3 missiles, with a range of 25 miles, and that these were used to hit the Negev town of Beersheba.

These have largely supplanted the short-range Qassam rockets made by Hamas in its clandestine workshops around the Gaza Strip.

There were concerns that the nuclear reactor at Dimona, 20 miles east of the biblical city, could also become a target. If Hamas does have Fajr-5s, then that nightmare scenario has become real.

According to Jane's Defense Weekly, Syria has decided to provide the Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement in Lebanon some 250 of its 800 M600 surface-to-surface missiles.

The M600 is a clone of Iran's Fateh-110 missile, which has a range of 160 miles, carries a 225-pound warhead and, unlike most of the short- and medium-range missiles currently arrayed against Israel, has an inertial guidance system. This would give Hezbollah new precision capabilities.

when the first of the new gen rockets start striking Tel Aviv
the IAF should start pounding every inch of Gaza , yard by yard , until there is literally nothing left. Don’t send in troops , just flatten everything , leave nothing standing and show no mercy .

First, you know that won't happen. So why suggest it?

Second, why advocate that Israel make the same stupid mistake they made in the '06 Summer War?

Don't get sucked into attacking the Pawns (Lebanon, Gaza). Go for the Pieces (Syria, Iran). The Pieces don't give a crap about losing Pawns. There's no deterrence there.

The Pawns certainly won't be deterred. The only thing they know is being Pawns. They'll fire rockets from the rubble as readily, more readily, as from standing mosques and schools. Israel will only lose allies, and respect, and damage itself.

No. Plaster the crap out of several Iranian National Guard bases instead and, if doable, drop in some special forces to shoot the survivors in the head. Ignore the proxies. Rack up a death toll among the players. (This, btw, is what Reagan should have done in response to the Lebanon truck bombings, instead of the ineffective offshore shelling by the Battleship Iowa. Although I respect him in general, Cap Weinberger turned p*ssy on that one and talked Reagan out of a punishing reprisal.)

Iron Dome has been criticized for its prohibitive cost. The estimated cost of the Tamir intercept missile is $35,000–$50,000,[5] whereas a crudely manufactured Qassam rocket does not cost more than a few hundred dollars.

Does not sound "cost effective at the margins".

If just one rocket hits Tel Aviv, and Israel should lock down gaza, shut off the power and water, then cluster-bomb every square inch of the hell-hole.

Screw the rest of the world, the only reason they "care" for the so called "palis" is in order to kill Jews.

Now THAT is serious. And Jane's is not Debka.

Israel should warn Syria that providing thses weapons will result in military action against Syria......and the US should totally back them.

Bingo.

But for the Israelis, this is a difficult and dangerous step. They would love to be able to buy time, maybe get to a more serious US administration, but that's at least 3 years away. Rough and tough decisions for them in the weeks ahead.....

Lessee they don’t want all of what Ehud Barack was going to give them which was the bath with the bath water, they refuse to acknowledge Israel as a country, and now they’re building missiles to blow up the land they may have received in the first place...oh yeah and America’s Embassy IS STILL IN TEL AVIV...now the heck what?

In defense of Debeka, they are very accurate and gives a clear picture of what is happening there.
