Clinton, Bush Radio City debate called off

A "debate" between former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush has been nixed because the promoter overhyped it as a death-match faceoff between the men, The Post has learned.
Clinton spokesman Matt McKenna said the appearance was never slated to be a "debate" and was actually a moderated panel discussion with the 42nd and 43rd leaders of the free world.
"This event ... was supposed to be a discussion between the two former presidents, and has been cancelled because it was not being billed as such by an overeager promoter," McKenna said.

Too bad. It would have been fun.

People forget that Bush was always considered the loser to debates going in, and yet he somehow beat the "intellectuals" Gore and Kerry in the end.
I am sure it's not true, but I have this idea that Clinton realized this was a no-win situation for himself.

Bush came off as the freshest and funniest in their Canada appearance.
Agree with you...Clinton likely weaseled out on this one.

First I’ve heard of this but glad it was canceled. GWB should maintain a low profile, IMO. I think that will enhance his stature. It isn’t yet time for him to start publicly challenging the RATs.

What would they debate about, they pretty much were the same, at least ideologically.

I don't think a debate between Bush 1 and Clinton would have been very good anyway. Bush 1 is getting pretty old
for that kind of thing, and he wasn't exactly a Tea-Party
Republican type in the first place.
To: markomalley
Even the local news in Dallas was hyping this.
lol.

I’m glad it would have been embarrassing and stupid. W. barely manages to get three words out before he sounds illeterate.
This was at best an ill advised effort to make money. W still thinks that Billy Jeff is his friend. Stupid Rockefeller republicans

I am sure it's not true, but I have this idea that Clinton realized this was a no-win situation for himself. You can't talk about Bush without mentioning the War on Terror. What's Clinton going to do? Use the usual Democratic line that Bush over-reacted? George's new brother" Bill doesn't want to go there.

You know what, he had the likes of Al Gore and John Kerry, and couldn’t beat them to a pulp at the polls. Look what Nixon did to McGovern in 1972. That’s what Bush should have been able to do.
When people figure that one out, they can understand why I didn’t think this was a decent idea.
Find a solid articulate well-informed Conservative and let him debate Clinton until the sun comes up. That I would love to see.
One good test would be, would they have rehabbed Clinton’s image by appointing him with their dad to the fund raising effort for the Tsunami victims like Bush did? If so, rule them out.
Talk about your brain dead moments in time...

Personally, I’m very relieved it won’t happen for several reasons. One, I wouldn’t lend credibility to slick willie in any way. Two, W, like his father, always bends over backward to be the nice guy. In any issue where their responsibility for the state of the country, Bush would always shy away from defending his tenure and go out of his way to say Clinton did a great job. Three, for all that people say Bush is a better debater than most give him credit for, he is usually a marble mouth fumbler and can’t seem to put together coherent sentences and arguments about half the time. Clinton isn’t called the slickster for nothing. Yeah, he can be a bit of a windbag or a major windbag, but overall, Bush would come out looking like a doofus by comparison.
I voted for Bush 2 times and would again against any current democrat, but I still say, I’m glad this thing is off.

And I'm guessing he knows how to spell "illiterate" too....... :)

I agree. He needs to keep a low profile for the next 4 years. He will be remembered for keeping us safe after 9-11. His economic policies (spending) left much to be desired. Of course after Obama gets through with his spending, Bush will look tame in comparison (which is why he needs to wait a few years to become vocal). I'd rather see Cheney doing the talking for now.
