As Santayana said, "Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it." Congressional Democrats take note!
Are the elections of 2009 precursors of the same kind of massive partisan upheaval in Congress that we experienced in 1994? The historical data says yes, they are.
In Virginia, the outcomes in 1993 and 2009 were almost identical. In 1993, after the Democratic incumbent, Doug Wilder, could not seek re-election, the governor's race pitted Republican George Allen against Democrat Mary Sue Terry. Allen won handily, 58 to 41 virtually the same margin by which McDonnell defeated Deeds this week.
And in New Jersey, the parallels between 1993 and 2009 are equally striking. Democrat Jim Florio, then the governor, was seeking his second term against Republican Christie Todd Whitman. In 2009, Chris Christie beat Jon Corzine, and in 1993 Whitman edged out Florio by 49 to 48. Chris Christie's margin was bigger, but his vote share was almost identical to Whitman's.
So if New Jersey and Virginia both behaved the same in 2009 as they did in 1993, will 2010 bring the same kind of sweeping Republican victory that 1994 did?

We The People are going to drain the sewer. Take that as a vow.
The GOP won’t make any gains in 2010 if the same idiots who bungled NY 23 are running the show by then.
The potential is really there. Whether it WILL happen remains to be seen. The Democrats have really dug us into a hole. The Republican brand remains damaged.
The results in Virginia were the most encouraging. Republicans not only won all three statewide contests, but further expanded their majority in the state legislature to the widest margin since the 1990’s. New Jersey, however, didn’t see Republican gains across the board, just the booting of a failed liberal governor.
You betcha!
Assuming there are elections next year - no given with this Marxist in the White House, I see the potential for a 1994-type blowout of the Rats.
What's important, as you pointed out in NJ, is the down ticket seats need to be changes as well.
IMO, if we are to continue as a nation, the liberals MUST MUST MUST be thrown of every position possible. Governorships, state houses, judges, mayors, dog catchers, school committees, etc. They are ‘the enemy within’, to quote Michael Savage. Then the change can really take place.
Massachusetts has a special election in January. I haven’t given up hope that we could win it.
Thanks ETR, came here to post much the same; leaving satisfied it is already posted.
The key point is the blowout in 94 would have been worse for the rats if the economy hadnot been improving, well 2010 is going to be terrible for the economy and each month with worse and worse stats and obama saying we will spend more money and appease more of our enemies, well this could really be better than 94.
Now if the pubbies can get some nice plan together
However, if Scott Brown did win, when WOW, 2010 might just be the biggest blowout since...I don't know when. If a Republican won the seat, Obama might as well order the boxes and schedule the moving truck, he's finished, Walter Mondale/George McGovern style. Hell, he wouldn't even win a single state.
The recent indication that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is considering a vote on healthcare reform this coming Saturday, blithely continuing as if the New Jersey and Virginia elections had not turned out the way they did, is evidence that she, at least, cannot read the writing on the wall.I recently read an article where Krazy Nancy said even if this bill means the RATS loose the majority in the House in 2010, passing this bill will have been worth it.
None of the ‘Rats running look like they’re very strong.
No, I disagree there.
Democrat’s were no prize in 2006 and 2008 yet they benefited because of a two party system. If the voters hate the Democrats more then by default they’ll transfer gains to the Republicans no matter how screwed up they may still be. The margin of gains could be increased with a competant principled Republican party but either way they stand to benfit by default. Provided Democrat’s continue to fail to learn their lesson between then and now.
That is what the GOP is counting on. It’s also why their liberal establishment hand picked candidates must be taken down. If the GOP is to win seats by default, we need them to be conservative candidates.
BTTT for later.
“Assuming there are elections next year - no given with this Marxist in the White House”
Would Elections be stopped if Obama declared Martial Law for a “National Security” Crisis”?
Even if they do make gains, they will lose the next time around if they don’t live up to their promises.
For that matter, both sides make promises they have no intention of keeping, even if they could. This is why we keep tossing out one set of bums only to have to do it all over again the next election. It’s all a con game.
Historic mid-term change is 17 House seats.
The big rush in Congress to ram everything through in two years is based on this fact, more than anything else.
The further it goes into election year, the less likely imcumbents will be, to pass controvertial items.
“The GOP wont make any gains in 2010 if the same idiots who bungled NY 23 are running the show by then.”
The voters in NY 23 showed they weren’t impressed by outsiders meddling in their communities.
Thoughtful conservatives realize a district with a fairly moderate Republican in place for 16 years might NOT go for Hoffman, who would have a predicted ACU rating of 90+.
McHugh (16 years as local Republican) held a lifetime ACU rating of 71.55, 60 and then 40 his last two years.
If Hoffman lived in the district, won a primary I expect he would have won.
“Would Elections be stopped if Obama declared Martial Law for a National Security Crisis?”
My understanding is yes. Although Martial Law was in place during the Civil War, Lincoln did not stop elections from being held; the cancellling of elections has never been ordered in the history of the country.
But, Barry 0 was a “historic first”, right? I put nothing past the gang of thugs running things.
So if New Jersey and Virginia both behaved the same in 2009 as they did in 1993, will 2010 bring the same kind of sweeping Republican victory that 1994 did?
No, not without offering an alternative message or plan that captures the imagination of the American voters.
Back in '94, this was the "Contract with America" (odd that Dick Morris & Eileen McGann didn't mention that in this article.)
But then again, many of us remember how quickly the GOP "leadership" shoved the Contract to the back burner as soon as they got their '94 victory, and went right back to "business as usual."
So I don't know what kind of message the Stupid Party is going to try to foist on the American People in 2010.
Oh, the GOP will probably pick up a couples seats,
but I really can't imagine what kind of mantra they can chant to produce results similar to '94.
Jorge Arbusto still leaves a very nauseous feeling in America's gut, so open borders "compassionate" conservatism ain't gonna get the GOP back in power.
