Alleged Fort Hood Shooter Nidal Malik Hasan Was 'Calm,' Methodical During Massacre
ABC News ^ | 11/6/2009 | Emily Friedman

Posted on 11/06/2009 5:30:04 AM PST by Saije

Witnesses to Thursday's massacre at Fort Hood said alleged shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was calm as he opened fire at a crowd of young soldiers, pausing only to reload before he was taken down by a female officer that many hailed today as a hero.

"It was very deliberate in his approach, they said that he was calm," Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone, the base commander at Fort Hood, told "Good Morning America" today. "Several soldiers shot multiple times and were recounting how they were shot."

The attacker killed 13 people, mostly military, and wounded 30. The Fort Hood Web site today addressed the tragedy with a line reading, "Friday is Day of Mourning! -- The duty day will begin no earlier than 0900."

Sgt. Salvatore "Rico" Sanchez told "Good Morning America" today that he treated a captain who was nearby when the shooting started. Covered with blood that wasn't his own, the captain escaped unscathed, with only a mild case of shock.

"According to the captain that I was treating, [Hasan] was sitting down and he just stood up out of nowhere and started shooting," Sanchez said.

As the sound of gunfire erupted, Sanchez said he heard people yelling to call 911 and "all kinds of cries for help."

Cone said wounded first responder Sgt. Kimberly Munley, who exchanged gunfire with Hasan and managed to shoot him four times despite being shot herself, put a stop to the carnage with her quick thinking and willingness to go head-to-head with the gun-wielding officer.

"She was quite effective, one of our most impressive young policemen," Cone said. "She walked up and basically engaged him. I think, certainly, this could've been far worse."

Kudos to Sgt. Kimberly Munley. I'm sure we'll learn a lot more about her soon.

SGT Munley should get a battlefield commendation.

This was war, brought to our land by a muslim infiltrator.

Maybe if she’d been carrying .45ACP instead of a wimpy 9MM she’d have put him down with the first shot? He’s hoping Sgt Munley gets well soon!

A Muslim shouts “Allah Ahkbar” and starts shooting, killing 13 and wounding dozens, yet the FBI says it is not terrorism, and we are all accused of having Islamophobia. We no longer live in America.

What do you suppose they were going to fight back with? Most troops aren’t allowed to carry arms in the US while on base. The woman who shot the perp(not alleged)was part of a first responder team. The fact is, keeping our troops unarmed while on base makes them sitting ducks.

Hasan, who was reportedly upset about an upcoming deployment to Iraq, had been disciplined in the past for preaching to his patients about his Muslim faith.

First time I've read what he was disciplined for...other articles said it was a "personal matter." Guess so.

Based on the general’s comment of, “His death is not imminent.”, I’d lay odds he’ll be given a military court martial, found guilty (as hell) and given a life sentance. Personally...line him up in front of a firing squad on the range. I’m sure there’d be a long line of volunteers...

My son was stationed at Fort Hood for awhile. Unless you are training or a first responder or a MP you cannot carry weapons on the base. You are suppoed to be safe there. The base is huge, the areas where they are training are many miles away from the building where this incident took place.

>> did anybody try to fight back? <<

That's THE big question IMHO.

You don't expect a group of Amish school children to fight back against a lone gunman.

But these victims were mostly well-trained military. They should ALL have rushed him -- if not immediately upon the first shot, then while he was reloading.

As far as we can tell, however, the victims just assumed a "deer in the headlights" stance and were more-or-less helpless, except for that one heroic (and armed) policewoman.

Actually it might be good to have him tried in Texas--they have the death penalty there.

Geraldo was worried about people being suspicious of other Muslims after this incident. Like after 9/11, when the liberals thought the biggest issue was the danger that Americans might take it out on Muslims.

The 13 dead are victims of political correctness gone amok.

I want him tried in a military court to preserve the integrity of the military courts.

If they can’t try one of their own, who killed more than a dozen military personnel on a military reservation while in uniform, then the military has no court.

I generally consider female police officers to be useless except for consoling victims, but in this instance the Sgt performed her duties with bravery and distinction. Excellent Work!

“I see Geraldo is already calling for the scumbag to get a trial in a civilian court.”

In a Texas state court? He would end up strapped to a gurney in Huntsville — and probably get there quicker than he would reach a similar end through the UCMJ.

Doesn’t matter if he got a change of venue, either. Anywhere in the state would yield the same result.

“As far as we can tell, however, the victims just assumed a “deer in the headlights” stance and were more-or-less helpless,”

We have seen enough of these incidents to suggest that the passive, “get down and hope the threat goes away” behavior is probably instinctual in unarmed individuals. It takes training and the right mindset to fight back in those circumstances. There is no time to coordinate an attack so realize you will probably be working alone. The best you can hope for is that 1 or 2 others will get the idea and try to help.

AG Holder and the FBI defend this action by claiming it was not terrorism.

Outrageous. It is. In this case it was embedded, imported, encouraged, allowed, condoned, Islamic terrorism.

Texas will do nicely.

Ron White:

I’m from Texas. In Texas we have the death penalty. And we USE it.

That’s right, if you come to Texas and kill somebody, we will kill you back. That’s our policy.

They’re trying to pass a bill right now through the Texas Legislature that will speed up the process of execution in heinous crimes where there’s more than three credible eye witnesses. If more than three people saw you do what you did, you don’t sit on death row for 15 years, Jack, you go straight to the front of the line.

Other states are trying to abolish the death penalty … my state’s puttin’ in an express lane.

Very nicely indeed....
