Posted on 11/06/2009 7:06:49 AM PST by Mrs. Don-o
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops dismissed the House Democrats plan to try to isolate funding for abortion in the health care bill as a money-laundering system that would do nothing to stop federal funding of abortion, an issue that could potentially derail health care reform.
The plan, known as the Ellsworth amendment after its author Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Ind.), attempts to serve as a compromise between pro-life Democrats led by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich) and the partys liberal, pro-abortion leadership. All of the health care bills currently before Congress allow for taxpayer funding of abortion....
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), which speaks for the approximately 300 active bishops in the United States, sent a memo to congressional staff on Thursday about the issue...
The bishops called this a money-laundering system because once premiums are paid into a public option, they become federal funds.
While all funds in the public plan begin as private funds, in the pockets of taxpayers and purchasers, they all become federal funds once they are paid to the government (whether paid as taxes or as premiums) and all abortions in the plan are paid for by the federal government, the USCCB memo reads.
So this money-laundering system, aside from making the operation of the public plan more unwieldy, does nothing to address pro-life concerns, the bishops said.

One wonders if the general “Catholic” people in this country will care.
All Catholic Bishops need to stand up and EX-COMMUNICATE EVERY LAST CONGRESSMAN AND WOMAN AND SENATOR who claims to be a catholic yet is for THIS BILL WHICH WILL FUND ABORTIONS. Start with Nancy Pelosi - it is time to call these liars and murderers out!
Only a blind fool could miss this point.
Anybody hear anything from the pulpit/bulletin yet about the bishop’s directive to oppose this? Nothing from my church last weekend, but I think they print the bulletins mid-week, so perhaps it was too late to include. Still, I wish the priest would have said something. We’ll see what happens this weekend, but isn’t the first vote coming on Sunday?
I hope the bishops didn’t wait too long.
I’m not Catholic. I’m against illegal immigration. I’m against abortion, too.
End the welfare state and if people grow up, those two issues will be minimized. Or maybe we’ll have civil disorder from the dependent leeches if we end the welfare state.
That is absurd.
Here are all the Blue Dog Democrats. The clickable links go to their online Message System. You can use this local district information --- City, State, Zip, and Area Codes-- to get through their spam filter. If they ask for a Zip+4, you can use any 4 digits added onto the indicated Zip Code.
The way I do it is, first copy this entire page of information into a different (Word) program. Then copy the line that has the city, zip, etc. for that particular district. The click the HTTP thingie to get into the Message System. Then paste the info. into one of the blanks, and point and drag the city, zip, etc. onto the correct lines.
Go get em.

Thank you for your consideration.
So many democrats from Georgia. Here’s hoping that a strong GOP turnout in 2010 will allow a thorough Gerrymandering of the state to consolidate the Left into as few seats as possible. Georgia should pick up a seat or two after the census and wouldn’t it be great to see ten or eleven GOP congressmen from there.
This is a serious statement from the bishops, invoking “money-laundering” for abortions. I have to say I’m impressed...
There are no “Blue Dog” Democrats.
The Democratic leadership allows some members to vote against the party line when the outcome of the vote is certain.
Your petitions calls, faxes and emails are futile.
They do what they are told. Otherwise they lose funding and risk a primary fight.
Thank you for the post. I looked for it earler this morning, but forgot the “money laundering” phrase.
Hard-hitting Bishops! Bravo for them.
The Catholics who support abortion are not REAL Catholics, but CINOs. They have excommunicated themselves and cannot receive Communion! (And they know that too!)
Is the full text of the memo available?
And if I maybe permitted to draw your attention to the obvious, there are many other religious denominations in the United States, and I have not seen one of them which has done one blessed thing even remotely resembling the Catholic Bishops' Action Alert, to step the Health Care Bill from Hell.
FYI, here's the religious breakdown of the 316 non-Catholic Christians in the House:
African Methodist Episcopal 4
Christian Science 3
Church of Christ 3
Disciples of Christ 2
Greek Orthodox 6
Seventh-day Adventist 2
Southern Baptist 3
Others (10), One each: Anglican, Assembly of God, Christian Reformed, Church of the Nazarene, Community of Christ, Evangelical, Moravian, Quaker, Reformed Church of America, Serbian Orthodox, United Church of Christ.
And what are they doing about it? Seriously, Im all ears.
Score one - a Big One! for the RCC.
Thank you! Nifty!
BUMP & Thanks
You’re welcome.:) Thank YOU!
They are asking for an address and phone number. Will they filter out my email if I use my out of state info?
You can use your own street address and 7-digit phone number, or ANY street address and 7-digit phone number. They will not filter it out if you use the district city, zipcode and area code provided with the list.
Working really well, and doesn’t take alot of time...
Thanks Mrs. D.
With Pomeroy’s comm stances with the Democratic fold, including his support for the AWB, and having been seated face to face with the man while he snipped “You don’t need an AK 47 to go deer hunting”, I’m not one to consider him a Blue Dog Democrat. He votes the votes he needs to survive: pro-senior stuff, pro-farmer subsidy, and pork for the cities. Guaranteed reelection in the past, but he’ll be looking less lovely in the future...
Keep in mind that "Blue Dog" just means they sit with the Blue Dog Caucus, generally fiscally cautious. Comparatively speaking.
It doesn't mean they're conservative on a range of issues. But it does mean they're more more persuadable on Big Ticket items than, say, Bawney Fwank.
And they come from more-conservative Districts, which means they have to at least keep warm on what the constituents back home are hot about.
A number of Blue Dogs have declared against the HealthScam, including Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (SD) and Frank Kratovil (MD-01). The vote could go either way by +1 or -1.
So we have to push hard, never weary, keep on pushing.
FYI, that kid Patrick Murphy in Pennsylvania is no “blue dog” - - he’s a flat-out rubber stamp for Pelosi and the socialist / Democrat agenda. That scumbag cares about absolutely nobody but himself and his own political ambitions. Please remove him from the list. Calling his office is a waste of time. Thanks.
I used the official Blue Dog list. I'm not the one who determines who's on it!
Here are all the Blue Dog Democrats. Thanks Mrs. Don-o.
It went well...hope I don’t get flooded with their junk email. Also emailed the info to my email list.
