Maine marriage victory proves Americans 'aren't on board' with same-sex marriage, says expert

CNA STAFF, Nov 6, 2009 / 11:58 am (CNA).- Maggie Gallagher, president of the National Organization for Marriage, spoke to CNA about the victory of Question 1 in Maine, which repeals previous legislation legalizing gay ‘marriage.’ Gallagher said that the victory, which defies statistics and expectations, “is very heartening to marriage supporters and disappointing to gay ‘marriage’ advocates.”

Noting that the supporters of same-sex marriage were surprised and upset by this victory, Gallagher analyzed the circumstances leading up to the election. “The gay marriage advocates,” she told CNA on Thursday, “had a three-year head start. They put millions into building an extensive grassroots organization.” She also noted, “Maine was a socially liberal state… and they have the entire political establishment on their side.”

Also important in the preparation for the election, was the experience and information gathered from the failure of Proposition 8 in California. “They ran the kind of ads that the critics said would have won in California,” Gallagher said. But the voters in Maine rejected the proposition by an even larger margin than they had in California.

Question 1, an initiative which overturned the Maine legislature’s decision to recognize homosexual couples as married, passed on Tuesday by a margin of 52.9 to 47.1 percent.

The results of Monday’s election represent “a change in the social narrative they were trying to create,” says Gallagher. Despite all the preparation, the extra time, and the incredible financial advantage, the American people have made it known that “they aren’t on board with this gay ‘marriage’ thing,” she concluded.

Article is clear, concise, to the point and pretty hard to argue with. And when thrown into the mix that it has been tried and failed every single time - and in 62% of our states. I’d say the people have pretty much spoken.

One thing that is being heard loud and clear is that the people and their representatives seem to have a disconnect on this. That is the bigger issue.

Homosexual marriage exists only where it’s been forced on the public by some black robed degenerate. I’ve long ago come to regard judges as the most malevolent, destructive segment of our society. Most of them seem to care more about ideology than law.

I’d say the people have pretty much spoken.

Unfortunately, some elected officials are deaf. The governor of NY has called a special session next week, at which time he plans to introduce legislation "Providing same-sex couples the same opportunity to enter into civil marriages as opposite-sex couples". FWIW, Michigan is also looking to legalize gay marriage.

What has happened to our country!

Because like w/ all things the liberals push it isn’t about what its about. In this case its about forcing you to validate and accept the gay ‘life style’ as valid. They demand you bow before them and confess you’re wrong and they’re right.
Odd that anything w/ even a whiff of Judeo-Christian values whips them into a ‘you can’t force your views on us’ frenzy. Taken together it lays bear their real motives and makes them to be sanctimonious hypocrites.

You seem rather erudite for an "average joe".

You reminded me of an old Walter Williams column years back, entitled "Don't Trust the Experts". I liked it so much, I read it to my son's class when he was in 5th grade (parents were encouraged to come in and read to the class).

In closing, I told the class I considered Dr. Williams as man that I truly respected and looked up to.

I detected a few surprised looks when they saw his picture, which provided me a teachable moment for these impressionable youngsters.

When the Republican Congress and Bush were stirring thing up with the protection of marriage legislation, the sexual perverts were crying for state’s rights. Well, ...here it is.

This country is on the road to hades and some states will lead the charge like NY. Sam Hoyt my assemblyass sponsored the bill in the assembly. Of course it passed there, but the senate? This may cause yet another uprising as the Hispanics are dead set against this.

Get this, I voted against gay marriage the other day in Washington State. On my way home I was listening to NPR and they informed that if you voted no one the ballot you actually voted for gay marriage.

A yes vote meant no on gay marriage. I can’t believe it. I asked my wife and she said she did the same thing as I bet a lot of other people did. Fortunately the measure passed by a slim margin or I would really fell like an idiot. They must have done some really fancy wording for me to have missed it. I feel like I should have to move to Florida.

I can’t believe it.

No is liberal speak for Yes! You are absolutely right. They intentionally phrase these items to confuse the majority voters who expect the English language is still at work in our country. If it's any consolation, they pulled the same trick in CA.

Good point about “civil unions”.

In California, there was already a far-reaching domestic partnership law which gave same-sex couples, and unmarried opposite sex couples age 62 and older, virtually all of the rights of marriage.

So the battle in California over Proposition 8 was only about whether these couples can be legally described as married.

I’ve long ago come to regard judges as the most malevolent, destructive segment of our society. Most of them seem to care more about ideology than law.

This is because of the bar associations, who have set themselves up as a form of shadow government.

"When the fairies are displeased with anybody, they are said to send their elves to pinch them. The ecclesiastics, when they are displeased with any civil state, make also their elves, that is, superstitious, enchanted subjects, to pinch their princes, by preaching sedition; or one prince, enchanted with promises, to pinch another."

This is a perfect example of how far apart elected officials are from the electorate. Advocates have spent years pushing this issue. Politicians that oppose it are at the best wishy washy and afraid to speak up too loudly. Yet when put to a vote of the public they can't get it to pass.

Salt of the earth....
