Crist denies flip-flopping on stimulus
Fox 13 Tampa ^ | 06 Nov 2009 | Chris Chmura

TAMPA - Governor Charlie Crist stood next to President Obama in February and hailed the economic stimulus plan as beneficial for a state that is reeling from job losses and budget gaps.

"We know that it's important that we pass this stimulus package," Crist said at the time .

But Crist now has joined a chorus of conservatives who are bashing the bill. Crist says he only supported the $787 billion in "concept," and that he did not support the actual bill.

"The concept, I thought and still believe, was important, was necessary, and has helped Florida," the governor said Friday.

During an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer this week, Crist said, "I didn't endorse it; I didn't even have a vote on the darned thing."

Appearing in Tampa, Governor Crist said he did not misspeak during the CNN interview. He stands by his characterization that he did not endorse the specific bill.

"I think the question posed to me was: did you endorse this specific bill," he said. Crist denied he is having it both ways.

Crist, who is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate, is facing swift scrutiny following the CNN interview.

His GOP opponent, Marco Rubio, posted a video on YouTube highlighting the governor's seemingly contradictory statements.

The Club for Growth group, which says it "endorses Republican candidates who support limited government and lower taxes," also produced a video sharply critical of the governor.

"Charlie Crist helped pass Barack Obama's spending program," it says, before citing statistics about rising unemployment and increased debt.

Rubio's video suggests Crist is re-inventing himself for political expediency, attempting to appear more Republican to primary voters who are traditionally a more conservative bunch.

When asked whether he has changed his position for political gain, Crist said, "No."

He again parsed his statement about the stimulus.

"I supported it in concept," he said.

Crist, who usually entertains questions as long as reporters can lob them, called for an aide to end the questions.

Florida will collect $15 billion in stimulus funds over three years, according to Crist's office.

ROFL! say WHUT??

Man, this is even more embarrassing than Creigh Deeds’ bullpuckey about raising taxes or not. Everything’s on the table, except more taxes, but those are on the table too! I supported it “in concept”!

Do these pols really think we’re that stupid?

Are we really that stupid? Sadly, I’m afraid some of us might be.

its so sad that bottom-feeders like crist can make a career out of the sheer stupidity and/or apathy of so many voters

The philosophy of political life in Thailand is “mai bien lai” which translates to.. go with the direction the reeds are leaning. Thailand survived Russian and Chinese influence for decades by laying down before one or the other.

Now Crist thinks we’ll buy his plans to sell himself as a political whore over and over just like Thailand.

I’m voting for Marco Rubio!

"The concept, I thought and still believe, was important, was necessary, and has helped Florida," the governor said Friday.

Perhaps someone can explain to me how a concept could have already helped Florida since he is saying it "has helped Florida." I thought a concept was just an idea unless he meant concept as in the Stimulus bill he was for before he was against it, but now he's lying through his tan about ever supporting it.

Poor DeDe Crist, or is it Charlie Scuzzyfava. He went back to his home base and he can't even get a break there.

Of COURSE he denies it. He thinks we don’t have videotape. As a 4th generation Floridian, Crist disgusts me! He is a RINO of the worst order, and NO WAY NO HOW will I accept him as a Senator. I also want him gone from the Governorship because I don’t trust his weasel RINO, Palm Beach schmoozing arse!

.. and WHAT’S THE DEAL with HIS FACE?!! This has always bothered me about Crist. It’s either that his face is the same color as his lips, or his lips are the same color as his face, and his entire face seems to consist of his lips. Plus the fact that he’s one of those “always tan” dudes like George Hamilton whom apparently hangs out at the pool every day drinking Mimosas or some girlie poolside drink!

Creepy!

Crist: “I don’t believe in Pork, I believe in the Concept of Pork.”

Oh, OK, Charlie. That explains it.

Oh good grief. PLEASE. If he wants to claim he changed his mind, fine - say that...maybe a few people would believe that because it is actually possible. It would be more compelling than this nonsense in claiming he didn't really support the bill to begin with.
