Barack Obama's reaction to bad news is to play it so cool that Americans yearn for a bit more drama - and some even for his predecessor, writes Toby Harnden in Washington.
During the election campaign, Barack Obama's cool detachment was a winning quality, the "No Drama Obama" a welcome contrast with the "Mr Angry" John McCain, never mind the hot-headed "I'm the decider" President George W Bush.
A year into his presidency, however, Mr Obama seems a curiously bloodless president. If he experiences passion, he seldom shows it. It is often anyone's guess as to whether an event or issue truly moves him.
He has spent more than two months considering a troop increase but do we know how he really feels about the Afghan war?
In a sign that the Obama honeymoon truly is over, I began to hear this week the first stirrings of a wistfulness about Mr Bush. "I never thought I'd hear myself say it," one Democrat told me. "But Obama makes you feel that at least with Bush you knew where he was on something."
When Mr Bush's Republicans were defeated in the 2006 mid-term elections, it was the President himself who stepped up and declared that his party had received "a thumpin'". The Democratic defeats on Tuesday were not on anything like the same scale but Mr Obama acted as if nothing at all had happened.
Mr Obama had campaigned for Jon Corzine, New Jersey's Democratic governor, five times, twice just last Sunday. But when Mr Corzine lost by four points in a state Mr Obama won by 15 last year - a 19-point swing to Republicans - White House aides just shrugged.
In Virginia, which Mr Obama won by six points last year, prompting Democrats to declare an historic political realignment in

His reaction to the Ft. Hood massacre is not strange to those of us who loathe Obozo with good reason.
Nice to see a UK paper writing about it though.
And, ha ha ha that a Dem would be missing President Bush....
I told my lib relatives that very thing would happen.
I want to hear it from them though....
I said the same thing to my wife. lol
This guy is as cold and emotionless as a cyborg. In fact I think he is a cyborg. He’s an Obamaton from some other planet and he’s only masquerading as a human being.
Every announcement, speech, and press comment is delivered with the same flat, detached tone of voice with the same inflection at the end of each sentence for emphasis.
All of the guy’s blood was removed at some point and replaced with embalming fluid.
I’m not normally one for saying “I told you so”, but....
I disagree. He showed lots of anger, and did rush to a conclusion, over the Cambridge police flap. Doesn’t anybody remember that?
>Makes you wistful for George Bush...<
Well, I wouldn’t say that! More like wistful for Ronald Reagan, or so disappointed because Duncan L. Hunter is not in thr White House.
President in Name Only.
God defeated Allah at Fort Hood.He also did not let Hasan die to gain a seat next to his perverted god.
Political Correctness is used to keep America blind to what actually goes on inside a Mujihads heart mind. The left has worked so hard at making sure that America does not see its war against Terror as a religious war, when in fact the enemy sees it as EXACTLY that. A religious war.
This is , as Bush said, a war against evil. And evil came to Fort Hood in the form of a jihadi who was in fact possessed by Allah. For me this incident has shades of the movie Exorcist.
And Good has triumphed, even though so many innocents died.
This truth of which we speak needs to me shared with America as much as possible.America needs to know of the evil which it faces, at long last. No matter what the left want to make of it.
The religious practice of the Mujihad needs to be explained to every one. There is an inner prayer designed to connect one with the self righteous energy of Allah, who literally takes over the body and mind of the jihadine.Thats what happened here.A kind of Muslim spiritual possession.Hasan was not insane, or deranged. He was just fired up on his prayers and energized. He was executing a religious ritual which he believed would open the gates of heaven for him.
The MSM will not properly inform the public about this religious practise of jihadism. It would no longer be a war on terror,The terrorists could no longer be redefined as criminals by Obama , who should be Mirandized with the benefits of due process that Bush had made sure to remove, as deserved.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? Hot-headed GW Bush?
Last night President Bush and Laura visited the injured and their families at Fort Hood. Today Obama and family left for Camp David. You choose.
Bloodless. How about America-hating Muslim?
The stealth muslim is totally empty.
Obama’s lizard skin is showing.
A well written piece. Spot on.
He is certifiable.
We have a stone cold souless, narcissistic, hating Prz.
The lenghts he will go to inflict pain on the American people is boundless.
Obama is still learning how to properly salute, he has that pesky problem with the middle finger, you know. I am sure he is just judiciously weighing the situation in order not to jump to any hasty conclusions. Getting out on the links can make the mind so much clearer on the important issues so I expect that he will be there for the dead and wounded just after he makes his decision on Afghanistan, within mere weeks according to Axelrod. Papa Oscar Sierra.
Wow, go Bush. I miss you too!
He and Laura quietly visited the wounded at Ft. Hood last night.
I miss them BOTH. We have lost so much in such a short time!
Well, chalk one up for the One other Worlders.
....for the other One Worlders, I mrant to say.
Co-employees of teh Saudi Kingdom and Islam. There agents are detatched.
What happened at Fort Hood shows there is no stealth.
Sure I miss President Bush atleast he was a man. A man the military could trust. Someday all of these so called progressives will miss the America they have destroyed!
I see the Obamessiahites have been alerted and are now posting long winded comments on the telegraph site to bury any criticism of him. I wonder if they are paid by SEIU dues, Acorn $$, or National Endowment for the Arts grants.
I really believe when history is written regarding GWB’s Presidency, we will see how the WOT forced him into compromising a lot of his original agenda. It would not surprise me in the least that the Dems held it over his head to get their way on many things.
Flame away. I know who's full of shit and who isn't.
I don't have a problem with that. In fact, I kinda lean towards a Heinlein approach, a la Starship Troopers, of making military service a citizenship requirement.
You’re not going to get any flack from me.
“he will be seen to be one of the top 5 presidents”
No flames here. I agree with you.
I couldn’t miss him because his failures caused all of this to happen.
All true, but the American people asked for all these horrors.
ha ha jokes on you. The American people have been told they asked for these horrors.
I understand the title of this thread in a whole new way now. "Bloodless," as in "bloodless revolution." 'Cause it sure looks like America's been taken over.
1.He hooked up with Kennedy inviting him over to the white house to see a movie and talked about and did expand the education budget like never before.
2.He signed the McCain/Feingold anti free speech law knowing and saying it was against the 1st amendment.
He started compromising right from the start, just so we could all get along. He tried to make peace with the ones accusing him of stealing the presidency and what did he get in exchange by talking peace with the dems? The worst treatment and demonizing by the dems and the press I have ever seen a potus get. For 8 long years without ceasing!!!!
