Update: Lone GOP vote came after call from President Obama
CNN ^ | Nov. 8, 2009 | Dana Bash and Peter Hamby

Washington (CNN) - Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao was the only Republican to vote in favor of the Democratic health care bill that passed the House late Saturday, a vote that came after President Obama called to personally to ask for his support, Cao told CNN.

The president dialed the freshman congressman from Louisiana around noon on Saturday, hours before a vote on an amendment offered by anti-abortion Democrats that banned most abortion coverage from the public option and other insurance providers in the insurance "exchange" the legislation would create. That measure passed later in the evening.

Cao said he explained to the president he could not support the health care bill without the amendment, but said he would support the bill if the abortion measure passed. It was a sentiment he also expressed to House GOP leadership ahead of the vote, he said.

So can someone Freepmail me when a Republican wants to run against him in the Primary? I’m broke, but I’ll send whatever I can to his opponent.

Americans should send him back to his own country...for good.

In the past, Cao has been touted by House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) as “the future” of the GOP. Republicans clearly went the distance to keep him in the fold for the health care vote. House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who promised protesters at a Tea Party rally this week that “not one Republican will vote for this bill,” was standing beside Cao as the historic vote unfolded...”

Will they dump him after his term is up...he is “the future” of the GOP”...nice going RNC...no more money for you, until you recognize trouble when you see it...the NY 23rd debacle cost us a vote too...

Don’t waste your money. He’s got Dollar Bill Jefferson’s old district. The only reason a democrat didn’t win is b/c it was a special election, and was held on a different day from the presidential election. So few Democrats showed up, but every single one of his supporters were there. There is no way he wins again.

Cao represents the dump of inner city New Orleans. There's no way any conservative will win this type of a third world excrement-hole full of welfare mooches. He'll be replaced with a Democrat in the next general election.

Of course, given how stupid the GOP is, it will pour at least $2 million or so into Cao's re-election effort anyway.

Doubtful. Districts with a majority of people on the dole will always vote Democrat. We stand a better shot of winning Nancy Pelosi's district than we do having a conservative win a majority welfare bum district.

This seat is a solid Democratic seat which Cao won from William “Cold Cash” Jefferson. We ought to be thanking the poor man for at least that and more. He has voted orthodox conservative except for this one vote (which wasn’t the deciding vote) but 90% here want to rake him over the coals forever for it. Good luck on keeping this seat. I wish even better luck on keeping it after primarying Cao. Heh.

You’d love Michigan’s newest republican state senator. He came highly recomended by the SEIU and Teachers union. Pro green jobs and pro green economy.

Most important he has an R in front of his name. I think the letter is for the seseame street voters who “need direction” when they get to the polls.
