Washington (CNN) - Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao was the only Republican to vote in favor of the Democratic health care bill that passed the House late Saturday, a vote that came after President Obama called to personally to ask for his support, Cao told CNN.
The president dialed the freshman congressman from Louisiana around noon on Saturday, hours before a vote on an amendment offered by anti-abortion Democrats that banned most abortion coverage from the public option and other insurance providers in the insurance "exchange" the legislation would create. That measure passed later in the evening.
Cao said he explained to the president he could not support the health care bill without the amendment, but said he would support the bill if the abortion measure passed. It was a sentiment he also expressed to House GOP leadership ahead of the vote, he said.

As if it will still be there in the final reconciliation...what a sucker...
Let him caucus with the dems.
It seems almost like a fan who got a call from their favorite famous person. Did Obama promise him an autograph?
30 pieces of silver.
When is this guy up for reelection?
So can someone Freepmail me when a Republican wants to run against him in the Primary? I’m broke, but I’ll send whatever I can to his opponent.
Not to worry, another Leftist black Democrat is sure to win in his district again next time anyway.
NO!
Say bye Cao
Profiles in Cao-ardice
Let him caucus with the VC.
“Let him caucus with the dems.”
I agree. He’s in a Rat district that simply wants the Govt freebies (New Orleans). As a Dem, he is much better than average.
Get rid of the B@S$t@rd in the next election.
>>As soon as enough time has passed Cao will be named an Undersecretary or Ambassador.<<
Or Czar — but in 3 years he will be unemployed, along with the rest of the royalty.
Anh “Joseph” Cao was born in Saigon....he is a “social justice” ideologue.
Americans should send him back to his own country...for good.
This kind of arm twisting smacks of gangster tactics. Did G W Bush ever do this? It just seems wrong.
In the past, Cao has been touted by House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) as “the future” of the GOP. Republicans clearly went the distance to keep him in the fold for the health care vote. House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who promised protesters at a Tea Party rally this week that “not one Republican will vote for this bill,” was standing beside Cao as the historic vote unfolded...”
Will they dump him after his term is up...he is “the future” of the GOP”...nice going RNC...no more money for you, until you recognize trouble when you see it...the NY 23rd debacle cost us a vote too...
We are 359 days away from fundamentally changing Congress.
Cao must be a real fool. Did he not see 0bama’s own pro-abortion voting record, as well as the first official act of his presidency?
The "abortion" amendment is bullsh#t and is "cover" .
the democrats litmus test is abortion/taxes/gun control... simple
Find someone in his district and boot this quisling OUT!!!
The president’s call may have gone like this.Obama. Now listen Chow! You have heard of ACORN, right? They are very well organized in New Orleans, and along with their sister organization, SEIU, well, I guess I don’t have to say more. Now give me the GD bi-partisan vote.”
Next year...like all of the people in the House of Representatives.
Has anyone put together a list of seats up for grabs? I think even traditionally "protected" democratic seats were put into play after last night's vote.
Don’t waste your money. He’s got Dollar Bill Jefferson’s old district. The only reason a democrat didn’t win is b/c it was a special election, and was held on a different day from the presidential election. So few Democrats showed up, but every single one of his supporters were there. There is no way he wins again.
Of course, given how stupid the GOP is, it will pour at least $2 million or so into Cao's re-election effort anyway.
I think Obama promised that he would personally campaign in the black majority area where he runs from. This guy should be knocked out in the primaries.
I bet Obama promised him that the Democratic Party wouldn’t run anybody against him in the 2010 election cycle.
Honestly, I think this sort of arm-twisting is standard operating procedure in politics.
If the Stupak amendment is not in the bill that comes out of conference, the House vote that follows should fail.
Doubtful. Districts with a majority of people on the dole will always vote Democrat. We stand a better shot of winning Nancy Pelosi's district than we do having a conservative win a majority welfare bum district.
What a nasty comment.
“When is this guy up for reelection?”
He is in the US House. You figure it out.
“This guy should be knocked out in the primaries.”
What? So we can see the other guy lose even bigger? Riiight...
>>He is in the US House. You figure it out.<<
Still morning in the West. I meant whether the seat was available for contention or just a gimme.
I’m not positive that in three years America as we know and love her will exist anymore.
Even if another Republican beats him in the primary, it is a heavily Democratic area, and the seat will return to the Dems next year.
Well, with no political future, it’s too bad he couldn’t have used his golden opportunity to do the right thing. He’ll probably be the Dim candidate next year.
Somebody needs to give him 30 pieces of lead.
This seat is a solid Democratic seat which Cao won from William “Cold Cash” Jefferson. We ought to be thanking the poor man for at least that and more. He has voted orthodox conservative except for this one vote (which wasn’t the deciding vote) but 90% here want to rake him over the coals forever for it. Good luck on keeping this seat. I wish even better luck on keeping it after primarying Cao. Heh.
You’d love Michigan’s newest republican state senator. He came highly recomended by the SEIU and Teachers union. Pro green jobs and pro green economy.
Most important he has an R in front of his name. I think the letter is for the seseame street voters who “need direction” when they get to the polls.
But don’t worry. At least they’ll feel better when they get to send their CfG’er candidate those $10 and $20 donations just to lose to the Democrat.
It’s just a lesson in futility.
Just another pink-underware RINO....Put his name on the list for “elective” therapy..
Cao is a conservative Republican who broke away on one non-deciding vote. Not similar.
Then laughed that he’s a closet democrat.
There’s little (i.e. no evidence minus this vote) of that.
Whatever you say Nancy’s boy. LOL
