"My dog ate our ratings."
Okay, that wasn't one of the lame excuses that CNN president Jon Klein came up with to explain away that network's drastic plunge in the ratings but the ones he did dream up were equally hilarious. Try this one on for size...their low ratings can be explained away because they don't run cartoons during slow periods. The CNN hilarious excuse entertainment was provided courtesy of this Matea Gold Los Angeles Times story which first listed the ratings woes facing that network:
...the network has lost much of the gains it made during the political boom time. CNN has drawn an average of 932,000 viewers in prime time this year, down 25% compared with the same point last year, according to Nielsen.
The trend has worsened as the year has progressed. In October, it recorded its smallest audience of the year, barely edging out its sister network HLN to avoid placing fourth in the key 25- to 54-year-old demographic in prime time. (Among total viewers, CNN still beat MSNBC across all programming, but placed a distant second to Fox News.)
...CNN is even feeling the slump on nights when it is expected to dominate. On Tuesday, it placed fourth with its election coverage, attracting just 826,000 viewers in prime time. Fox News had more than 4 million, while MSNBC drew 974,000 and HLN (which didn't cover the election) had 842,000.

PING!
...he must have gotten spin lessons from Bhagdad Bob
I think a Fox ate his ratings.
Maybe some of it is subliminal. Maybe its just me, but the election of Obama was like a signal to CNN to put an inordinate number of minority anchors on. Sometimes I get the feeling that I’m watching BET. It’s due to something more than just teabagger or the falloff in political off-years.
Are they counting all the hostages at airports in the viewership tally? If so, it’s probably thousands fewer.
What’s a ‘CNN’?
If Barry O'bama gets the show on TIVO and watches it 1,000 times, how does that count?

CNN=Cap Nap Network
Are there that many people that need a little snooze?
He can spin all he wants but the bottom line doesn’t care. In the end, CNN will face the truth...or pay the price for denial.
Comedy News Network.

Oops!
“Maybe some of it is subliminal. Maybe its just me, but the election of Obama was like a signal to CNN to put an inordinate number of minority anchors on.”
...don’t watch it very often....but I think you’re right...matter of fact the whole minority emphasis thing is puzzling to me...it’s is if organizations do this to ward a possible race card.
“Whats a CNN?”
That’s what airports use instead of elevator music.
No! No!
Jon Kleins at least partly right. They should run cartoons all day every day and appeal to their nature audience [morons].
This sounds like a job for ‘3-D greased lesbian wrestling’.
FOX wound up with 4 million. Imagine how many people would tune in to a REAL conservative network!
They can use all the excuses they want but $$$$ talks and they have to be losing advertisement and when that hits them in the pocketbook let see if their bias changes
Yup...there's still real opportunity if it didn't get too religious.
“Jon’s correct: It’s unfair to compare CNN to Fox News,” said Fox News spokeswoman Dana Klinghoffer. “Based on his network’s dismal ratings, it’s more accurate to compare CNN to the G4 channel.”
Wolf Blitzer is the only living white straight guy I can think of in the studio (Larry King isn’t alive).
And some of their women are really unpleasant to look at. Watching Candy Crowley (Bernard Shaw didn’t retire, Candy ate him), Dana Bash (neigh!), terrorist sympathizer Christina Amanapoor-whatever, and their medical nag they have in the daytime all make me feel like I’m being punished for something.
To the CNN suits: Joe Klein is a GENIUS. Don’t ever fire him.
Interesting that MSNBC beat CNN in the election coverage. No doubt that was political-junkie liberals tuning in to watch the returns with a nice dollop of leftwing spin on top. Liberals whine about FOX having a bias, but deep down in their grubby little hearts liberals like their news with a POV too.
Well, that explains why I didn't know. I haven't been in an airport for years...
This is not fair. Time to level the playing field.
The O administration needs to take half of the Fox viewers and give them to CNN.
They also need to give CNN some 8” tall plastic awards and trophies so they will feel better about themselves.
Spreading the wealth.
This guy MUST be related to Robert “Beltway Bob” Gibbs, LOL!
And FOX is showing cartoons now so they will have high high HIGH ratings?!? Dang, I totally missed out on that! What are they showing? ;-)
That is spot-on...and, do I ever miss TechTV!
Well, Bugs, Daffy, and Foghorn, etc., probably would get more viewers...
Hey hey! Elevator music is at least pleasant to listen to.
I love Muzak’s Environmental channel. :”)
NO /s tag here.
No offense!
I will admit at least Muzak does serve a useful function for some people!
Have yet to find a good reason for CNN, though.
My reply was supposed to sound somewhat jovial :) None taken.
Airport bookstore owners wake up everyday and thank God that CNN is on those TV’s.
“CNN also devoted substantial coverage this summer to the death of Michael Jackson. In the two months following his death in late June, the story was the second most-covered topic in prime time on CNN, taking up 17% of the airtime, according to the Project for Excellence in Journalism’s News Coverage Index. MSNBC devoted 9% of its airtime to Jackson and Fox News spent 6% of its time on the topic.”
Now that’s good. That’s ammo.
The next time some koolaider accuses fox of sensationalism, I think I’ll trot that one out.
“No doubt that was political-junkie liberals tuning in to watch the returns”(MSNBC)
I can tell you, they had a miserable night. I was in in the Elks that night, and I passed the bar to get some water. For some strange reason they had MSNBC on in the bar, and I could tell across the room the news was terrible for the dems.
Laurence O’Donnell had a face on that looked like his dog had died. Everyone on the channel looked like death. It was the best laugh I’d had in a year.
Question: Was the Michael Jackson coverage sensationalism or cartoons?
Answer: Yes.
“Their appeal is becoming more selective,” says the band's manager, Ian Faith (Hendra), explaining to Marti DiBergi (Reiner) why the band has been downgraded to performing in increasingly smaller venues, and is forced to endure the cancellation of several shows.
- This Is Spinal Tap
I watched the end of Olberman just to see them squirm. I continued on into the next show. After 48 minutes I realized that MSNBC had had NO Republicans or conservatives interviewed or making commentary. Everyone they talked to was Democrat and liberal. On FOX the very first thing I saw was a panel which included Willie Brown, Mayor of San Francisco.
