British spies have foiled a terrorist plot by a suspected al Qaeda operative to blow up the New York subway.
The plan, which reportedly would have been the biggest attack on America since 9/11, was uncovered after Scotland Yard intercepted an email.
The force alerted the FBI, who launched an operation which led to airport shuttle bus driver Najibullah Zazi, 24, being charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction.
The Afghan is alleged to have been part of a group who used stolen credit cards to buy components for bombs including nail varnish remover.
The chemicals bought were similar to those used to make the 2005 London Tube and bus explosives which killed 52 people.
Zazi, from Denver, Colorado, is understood to have been given instructions by a senior member of al Qaeda in Pakistan over the internet.
US authorities allegedly found bomb-making instructions on his laptop and his fingerprints on batteries and measuring scales they seized.
A phone containing footage of New York's Grand Central Station, thought to have been made by him during a visit a week before his arrest, was also found along with explosive residue. Zazi was also said by informants to have attended a terrorist training camp in Pakistan.

I went to NY over the weekend for the first time since 9/11. And rode the subway. I feel for those who do it everyday and always have to wonder when the next attack is going to come.
There wasn’t a certain Army major pschiatrist involved by creating a distraction was there?
Since he has been in he has bowed to muslims, will not do anything concerning the wars we are in plus will not call what this attack was and that is terrorism.
His shout out and smiling before mentioning the attacks was a national disgrace and then he took over 2 and a half mins to mention it because of his shout outs.
He has shown weakness and lack of leadership plus an appeasement to our enemies

Why would they want to blow up a subway? There’s no motive given. We are left to guess the reason.
So when will some POS italian judge try these Brit agents in abstentia for violating the terrorist jihadis’ “civil rights.”

I guess our own CIA couldn’t tell the FBI about the international intercepts. Wouldn’t want to violate a perps privacy you know.
We may never know. It’s a giant mystery.
On a serious note: several major U.S. cities have extensive underground systems through their downtown areas which if collapsed would create a major foundational problem for the skyscrapers alongside the tunnel systems. The broken water lines would be sufficient enough to undermine the major buildings alongside. The gas and electric lines buried along these same routes would add to the devastating effect. You have to believe al qaeda pondscum have been looking at the devastating potential since probably before 911.
Think mass murder. Big crowds, big impact. Not a better way to spread a deadly infectious agent that could take down a 100,000 or more. Subways act as a giant air plunger to spread aerosolized material throughtout the network. The terrorists know exactly what they are doing.

blow something up inside a tunnel and the damage expands beyond the casualites. (i have been riding the nyc subway most of my 55 yrs). economic-they feed people from the bouroughs into Manhattan, (also many won’t ride after 1 attack.) Physical- a portion of most every line either runs underwater or on a bridge. The thought of the east river coursing through a tunnel is not a pretty one. The tunnels also run both ways you almost always pass another train going in the opposite direction so a suicide bomber could time for that.
A tunnel is about the worst place they could hit us.
My fav BBC show is “MI-5” and they usually are tracking islamic terrorist plots. I am surprised Britian lets the bad guys be Islamics.

I’ve only seen a couple of the “MI-5” episodes out here in “flyover
country” (Mid-Missouri on PBS).
IMHO, it is a pretty good show; and note that some of the ex-pat Muslims
are shown to be exploited/coerced by the real Islamics.
So to a limited degree, some of the Muslim charachters are shown
to be decent folks that are just being shoved around by the bad actors.
Even though the decent types hoped to escape their cruel Islamicists
by getting away to England.
Call your PBS station and ask we run the shows or ask your local library to purchase them for lending. I gave our librarian the BBCA catalogue I get and she was grateful and I circled and told her about which shows I liked. They are now on the budget to purchase.

There was also a 2006 plot to blow up the PATH tunnel (PATH is a commuter train line which connects NJ with lower Manhattan via a tunnel under the Hudson River).
The PATH station in lower Manhattan, and the subway system in much of lower Manhattan, are below the water line. If the tunnel was breached, there would have been massive flooding.
See my post #30. the attempt was made in 2006. If they had succeeded, and it was rush hour, thousands could have drowned in the lower Manhattan subway tunnels.
