Parsippany, NJ, man arrested for weapons cache was converting guns to illegal weapons for profit

Prosecutors said a Parsippany man who was charged last week with possessing an arsenal of firearms in his home allegedly manufactured and converted guns into illegal automatic weapons at his home and sold them.

Adam Coughlan, 29, who was arrested Thursday in a raid of his Lake Hiawatha home by authorities, also is a flight risk because he may have ties to the "neo-Nazi" underground, Morris County Assistant Prosecutor Bradford Seabury said during a bail hearing. Since the arrest, investigators have been examining Coughlan's computers, documents and books, and found instruction manuals on how to convert guns into fully automatic weapons that are illegal in New Jersey and "pictures of neo-Nazi type literature," Seabury said.

More than 40 firearms and high-capacity ammunition were seized during the raid from the Roosevelt Avenue home, and Coughlan was charged with three counts of second-degree possession of assault weapons with a high-capacity detachable magazine, and one count of fourth-degree possession of high-capacity ammunition magazines, authorities said.

A judge raised the bail to $350,000, up from $200,000, without any 10-percent option.

Seabury said Coughlan was captured on electronic surveillance arranging to sell an AK-47 automatic firearm at the Quick Check in Parsippany where he worked.

Coughlan's attorney, Lawrence Kalish, said Coughlan has no prior criminal record and received a bachelor's degree in social work from William Paterson University in 2005.

My favorite part from the article was “High Capacity Ammunition”. WTF? Is that a shotgun shell loaded with birdshot? :)

In MSM-speak that means that they think he posts to Free Republic. < /sarc >

no prior criminal record and received a bachelor’s degree in social work from William Paterson University in 2005....

I thought that automatic AK-47s were for social work. He was employed in his field.

instruction manuals on how to convert guns into fully automatic weapons >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Not Illegal.

More than 40 firearms and high-capacity ammunition>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Not illegal.

possession of assault weapons with a high-capacity detachable magazine,>>>>> Illegal if fully automatic

and one count of fourth-degree possession of high-capacity ammunition magazines,>>>>>>>>>>>>>Illegal if dated after ban
( This charge , is placed in case the first one doesn;t stick on ppossession of fully automatic weaponry, which makes me think this is a weak case)

Soon we all may need fully automatic weapons. The market demand for them is growing.

I wonder when Obama will make hold a press conference telling us that we should not jump to conclusions?

If I read the article correctly he was manufacturing some firearms and converting others to full automatic fire.
I think the manufacturing part is on a par with the high capacity ammo.

They really loaded this up with all the scary vocabulary they could think of, huh?

Meanwhile, we have a jihadist shooter in TX who is "suspected" of killing 13 and wounding 29, but who has mysterious motives that no one (!) can possibly understand.

But that guy in Jersey? Oh, Neo-Nazi, no question about it. Guilty as hell. Yessirree.

Something you don’t see every day, a “neo-Nazi” with a degree in social work.

Fully automatic weapons are perfectly legal for citizens to own in the US....but there is a 200 dollar tax to be paid and you can only own certain models.

The most dangerous personal weapon ever designed is also legal and there is no tax....the scoped rifle, call it a sniper rifle or a deer hunting rifle... same thing.

The gun most likely to be abused by criminals is the cheap handgun.

Well, the catch here is that fully automatic weapons are not legal in New Jersey and, further, if the accusation is accurate, he was making them to sell.

Neo-Nazis have an unhealthy connection with Muslims.

But the last time I checked, having pro-NAZI paraphernalia is not illegal - unfortunately.

This does NOT look like the kind of case that the NRA and pro-Second Amendment advocates should be hanging their hats on. On the contrary, we should distance ourselves from this guy.

Morris County New Jersey is a solid Republican County with pro-Second Amendment legislators in the State Senate and Assembly - who are, unfortunately, out numbered by the mass of libs there. As an aside, the Morris County Prosecutor is a DEMOCRAT. He was appointed by the out going governor Jon Curswine. Like most gubernatorial appointments in Jersey, the governor picks somebody from his own party. The good news for the Republicans in Morris County is that he has to be re-appointed to get “tenure”, and Christie will probably replace him with a Republican.

Yes, but it is not legal to manufacture new ones.

Agreed, at least on stupidity.

“Seabury said Coughlan was captured on electronic surveillance arranging to sell an AK-47 automatic firearm at the Quick Check in Parsippany where he worked.”

Do it in the woods, for crap’s sake.

Notice that it seems he was only charged with having high-cap mags, which are probably illegal in Jersey, one of the most restrictive states in the US.

If the problem was full-auto weapons, why wasn't he charged with that?

Looks like BS to me.

Now, we mustn’t jump to conclusions, right? And even if he is a neo-nazi, this doesn’t reflect on all neo-nazis, right? And besides, maybe something was just stressing him out.....
