AP : Public option is dead
Hot Air ^ | November 08, 2009 | ED MORRISSEY

Nancy Pelosi may have been all smiles on Saturday, but the difficulties encountered in her full-court press on the ObamaCare bill will only get worse, the AP reports this morning. The AP declares the public option dead, thanks to skeptical Democrats, and Joe Lieberman pledges to stop the bill from coming to the floor with one included. The LA Times concurs:

House approval of legislation Saturday — even if Democrats can move it no further — was an accomplishment that has eluded presidents for decades. But the close vote and the exertions it took to secure a majority were laden with warning signs as the issue moves to the Senate.

Even though the House is a bastion of liberalism, the healthcare overhaul was a tougher sell than expected and the bill turned out to be more conservative in its price tag, more limited in the scope of its government-run insurance option and tighter in its restrictions on abortion funding than many Democrats had hoped.

Kill the whole bill.

The public option can easily be added later once you’ve breached the constitution. Once you’ved imposed federal control over the entire industry, there is no barrier to anything they want to do.

Kill this bill, or watch them steam roll any and every industry they set their sights on.

It won't matter if a public option is in the final bill. If anything gets passed and signed into law, we will eventually have not only a public option, but it will be the only option.

There are so many mandates placed on insurance companies in this bill, (remove pre-existing condition exemptions, require a whole host of services be covered, end pricing policies based on the buyer's health history, etc.,) that after a few years there will be no insurance company left that will offer health insurance. Then in steps Uncle Sam with the Medicare for All option.

gee, these guys are just now getting around to saying what I’ve been saying for months: The dim party is too broad and diverse, both politically and geographically, to pass the legislation.

This bill IS dead.

The abortion issue will kill it in the House if it is stripped from the bill.

The Public option will keep it bottled up in the Senate.

This bill IS dead.

I tend to agree, but then again I thought that it was not going to make it out of the House. So my track record is not that good. :-)

This has been a huge strategic mistake by Bam, Nancy, Harry etal. They are over reaching, there is little public support for what they are doing and even if it passes it can be “undone”. All this has served to do is energize the Conservative base big time, VA and NJ as well as upstate NY are clear examples of this.

Senators know this, and so far they have not be as willing as the House to commit political suicide by supporting this grotesque piece of legislation. It will be after the first of they year before this gets anywhere, it is difficult to imagine these guys want to be talking about the bill in March of 2010 with the election a few months away.

Plus Harry is scared to death about his seat next November, he is not going out on a limb for Bam.

If the Demos want to go down this path, then they are fools and will get what they richly deserve.

It ain’t over ‘til the ‘fat lady sings’. And I mean SINGS....her heart out.

It ain't over until Obama and the Dems are out of office.

I remember the Clinton Assault Weapons Ban. We thought it was dead at one point, but Clinton used every trick he had to get it passed.

Same deal with this. Obama's "street cred" is riding on this passing. He will do ANYTHING he has to do, to get it passed.

What people don’t understand is, they will change it until they find the combination that will win the 51 votes it needs to pass. They may even trick one of the surrender sisters from Maine to give it that one republican bipartisan look they like so much. Once they do that, it goes to committee. They’ll tell everyone they have done xy and z in committee, then demand a vote. No paper no proof, just vote. Then they will get it passed by saying anything they need to say. Once they get that job done, they will actually write the bill Obama really wants and have him sign it into law.

There will be many politicians shrugging their shoulders saying, I didn’t see that in the bill or I would have voted against it. But it will be too late since it will already be law. That is why there is no way this thing should pass the Senate no matter what they say they have done to the bill.
