(CBS) Tonight, after months of conferences with top advisors, President Obama has settled on a new strategy for Afghanistan. CBS News correspondent David Martin reports that the president will send a lot more troops and plans to keep a large force there, long term.
The president still has more meetings scheduled on Afghanistan, but informed sources tell CBS News he intends to give Gen. Stanley McChrystal most, if not all, the additional troops he is asking for.
McChrystal wanted 40,000 and the president has tentatively decided to send four combat brigades plus thousands more support troops. A senior officer says "that's close to what [McChrystal] asked for." All the president's military advisers have recommended sending more troops.

Unless they change the rules of engagement and allow our troops to operate without constraints, they might as well build the helicopter pads on the US Embassy in Kabul right now - eventually they are gonna need them.
Zero sure has a knack for politics. He made conservatives and pro-military people mad by dithering. Now he’s gonna make his own base mad by giving the troops anyway.
There are some Dems who oppose the financing..including the Botox BatWitch.
40k or 80k...it doesn’t matter. The Muslim man-child’s rules of engagement are going to kill our finest in that distant hellhole.
Mr. President, the Nobel committee is on line one.
Frank on Afghanistan: More people ‘need protection from criminals’ than al Qaeda
By Jordan Fabian - 11/09/09 02:29 PM ET
Rep. Barney Frank said he would oppose a troop increase in Afghanistan because people in his district face greater threats than al Qaeda.
Frank (D-Mass.), the House Financial Services Committee chairman, said that the federal government needs to spend its funds on domestic priorities rather than on foreign wars in light of the nation’s record $1.4 trillion budget deficit. Frank said that domestic problems, such as crime and global warming, pose a greater “threat” to citizens in his district than al Qaeda does.
“There are cops in my districts who have been laid off. And there are people in my district who need more protection from criminals than they need from al Qaeda,” Frank said during an appearance at Cornell University on Sunday. “That’s just a fact of life.”
Frank continued that “they need protection {inaudible} from urban areas where there have been foreclosures on the fire department. And they need more protection from bridges falling down when they drive over them. And from pollution in the water, et cetera.”
In opposing additional troops be sent to Afghanistan, he also cited the human cost of war.
“I sat in a church where they buried a kid who was killed in a war I voted for. That’s a very serious responsibility. A very tough one,” he said.
The Obama administration since September has been developing a new strategy in Afghanistan. The administration began the strategic review following a report issued by commanding Gen. Stanley McChrystal that called for the military to deploy 40,000 additional troops to the war-torn nation.
The process has been delayed by several roadblocks, including reports of widespread fraud in the reelection of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Frank said that if he were the president, he would consider adding more troops in Afghanistan only if the government can pay for it by withdrawing soldiers from Iraq in six months, as opposed to the 18-month process initiated by the military earlier this year.
Regardless, Frank said the eight-year-long war has taken too high a toll on the country.
“We are doing an enormous harm to the quality of life in American society,” he said.
He has no choice. He campaigned on winning in Afghanistan, but he will now tie their hands and slowly bleed the country. Shades of Lyndon Johnson.
He waited until the House approved the Pelosi mess on health care. He did not want to stir the pot until that was done. It won’t be that big of a deal with the Senate so now he can betray his base fairly safely. At least he is an equal opportunity hoser.
Nevertheless, whatever the reason I am grateful our guys are getting some more support over there.
Lets see if there are going to be further terrorist attacks now.
The next big question is.....Will the President allow them to take their weapons and will they be allowed to defend themselves against muslims?
Trial balloon?
Fwank's spent so much of his life in the toilet, he no longer recognizes those rare monents he slips up and tells the truth.
trial balloon n. - An idea or a plan advanced tentatively to test public reaction.
EVERY DAY A NEW NUMBER
Simply a means to an end for him...
This is in line with what the commander in the field wanted, but it faces serious opposition from the Democrats.
Well this just proves Afghanistan is all about politics. No coincidence that he drops this news a few days after the libs got their left wing nut base the healthcare legislation they were desperate for.
My kids are in, one deploying in January. They had the discussion, should we get out because of bambi? They’ve opted in, the US is bigger than one man, God Bless our military, we need them now more than ever! PS, they are oathkeepers.

Democrat policy keeps sinking to new levels of cynicism. They can get away with it because their voters are so damn STUPID.
And it's one, two, three, what are we fightin' for? Don't tell me I don't give a damn. Next stop's Afghanistan.
I hope not, for sure, but this could be Obama's VN.
Bwanny Fwank is an Expert Analanalyst!
What,eh, Barney? Spent all the local taxes on gay parades and public bathrooms patrols, guess we need a national force to do what the local officials should be doing?
Bammy is sending more troops to reduce unemployment in the U.S. If he brings troops home, he adds to his ever increasing unemployment lines.
My guess is that they are leaking 40K so that when they come-in with the actual number (I’m guessing 25 - 30K) they can portray it in a positive light with the Kool-aid drinkers.
Yeah, that's what I've been wondering.
So...
Obama was simply waiting this whole time so he’d preserve enough support for the ObamaCare House vote.
Nice ... Really nice.
Barney's words went {inaudible} when he spied a hot stud-muffin reporter in the front row uncrossing his legs...
Sorry, that was my guess as to what was happening, not a question as to what a TB is. Didn’t read your post under the excerpt.
God bless you and your fine family for all they are doing for this great country!
He likely will announce it at the Fort Hood Memorial Service
, converting it to his own personal presser, Tuesday, November 10th.
Its his war now.
This is akin to waiting for a new Pope to be elected, everyone reading things into puffs of smoke - or, in this case, careful leaks/trial balloons.
Pitiful.
How many million$ of US taxpayer's money will he send the Taliban to "Spread The Weapons"?
I thought this has been debunked.
I haven't heard any rumor, much less reporting of funding the Taliban, so thought the /s was obvious.
I'm pretty sure that if/when the Taliban gets 0 dollars, there will be multiple block lettered headlines, at least here.
