Complications Grow for Muslims Serving in U.S. Military By ANDREA ELLIOTT

Abdi Akgun joined the Marines in August of 2000, fresh out of high school and eager to serve his country. As a Muslim, the attacks of Sept. 11 only steeled his resolve to fight terrorism.

But two years later, when Mr. Akgun was deployed to Iraq with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, the thought of confronting Muslims

He was haunted by the possibility that he might end up killing innocent civilians.

“It’s kind of like the Civil War, where brothers fought each other across the Mason-Dixon line,” Mr. Akgun, 28, of Lindenhurst, N.Y., who returned from Iraq without ever pulling the trigger. “I don’t want to stain my faith, I don’t want to stain my fellow Muslims, and I also don’t want to stain my country’s flag.”

Thousands of Muslims have served in the United States military — a legacy that some trace to the First World War. But in the years since Sept. 11, 2001, as the United States has become mired in two wars on Muslim lands, the service of Muslim-Americans is more necessary and more complicated than ever before.

In the aftermath of the shootings at Fort Hood on Thursday by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan of the Army, a psychiatrist, many Muslim soldiers and their commanders say they fear that the relationship between the military and its Muslim service members will only grow more difficult

On Sunday, the Army’s chief of staff, Gen. George W. Casey Jr., said he worried about a backlash against Muslims in the armed forces and emphasized the military’s reliance on those men and women.

“Our diversity, not only in our Army but in our country, is a strength,” General Casey said Sunday on “Meet the Press” on NBC.

Oh, it should grow more relaxed, I gather. May the God of freakin' political correctness forgive me (not really, I couldn't care less) but you see there's this thing called self-preservation that has us act in a way in which we seek to protect ourselves, that's all.

“I don’t understand why the Muslim-American community has to take responsibility for him,” said Ingrid Mattson, the president of the Islamic Society of North America. “The Army has had at least as much time and opportunity to form and shape this person as the Muslim community.
The attitude expressed by these Islamic apologists would be incredibly funny if it weren't so tragic. It's exactly this sort of convoluted, politically correct liberal mindset we have to fear, portect against.

The longer we allow the virus of Islam to spread in these United States the harder it will be to eradicate.

For starters, ban Islamists from our Armed Forces. Not gonna happen, but it should.

It is a question that should be put to any Muslim in the Military. Is your first loyalty to America or Islam? There is only one right answer.

We need to stop thinking of Islam as a religion. It is not. It is a totalitarian system, all encompassing, like communism. At its core is an instruction manual on how to attack, subjugate, infiltrate, and destroy other systems. It is a murderous death cult without a single redeeming human characteristic. Islam is a cancer on humanity. Mohammed was a psychotic child molester, in many ways a lot like Obama.

Where was all this handwringing on the left when christian President Bill Clinton was bombing the crap out of christian Serbia including bombing them on Easter Sunday with christian troops? No one had pause then, but now we have to give pause and understanding to Muslims who don't want to fight Muslims.

The leftist / communist media throwing up the wall of
diversion / confusion for Obama.

We have an administration that is emboldening
the terrorists.

This sort of thing ( attempted terrorist
attack on us soil) is becoming a weekly event now that the
current administration is dismantling a national security
system that kept us safe for 8 years. After a knife through
the heart of the intelligence community we are going to blame the Americans and the Army?

Elections have consequences and this is one of them.
Expect more in the future. I will be putting the blame
at the feet of the real instigator, the current
administration. The one that think the real terrorists
are pro-lifers, returning soldiers, vets, Christians,
tea party attendees, those with criticisms of the current
administration.

Perhaps if they policed their crazies, stopped funding wahabbism, and stood up for what is right they would gain a little support.
But they refuse to take a strong stand against this crap so hopefully they will suffer NOW.
And at this point were I on a grand jury hearing a case where a Christian took out a whole bunch of moosies I do not think I’d indict.

Not a problem, says the FBI -- it was research.

Not a whole lot of "shaping" by the Army going on, it seems.

True, he might end up killing some innocent civilians in the process of killing those who kill innocent civilians as a matter of course. The innocent civilians that die in an American attack on a terrorist stronghold are but a small fraction of those who will die if the stronghold and its terrorists aren't taken out.

Ingrid needs to ask why her “good” Muslim community doesn’t jerk their Muslim perverts up by the neck and shake some sense into them.

At the same time, these “good” Muslim Imams should go out and do the same with their jihadist Imams.

Surely their Allah considers it a sin to watch evil be done and sit idly by.

Doodad—You nailed it. Muslim slaughter of Muslims is centuries old. But this century’s Islamists are the most cowardly and degenerate yet. Today, they won’t fight in uniform and they don’t hesitate to use their populations as human shields. And their goal, to get to a heaven with 72 virgins? Meantime, illiteracy and poverty overwhelms the majority of the Muslim world, while the oil rich and the well connected enjoy their riches. Think I read somewhere that countries that are rich in resources, are poor in brain trust. The oil rich are holding tightly onto every last dime, fomenting Islamic radicalism—when they could invest in improving the quality of the lives of their people. Until that happens, this problem isn’t going away.

As a former NCO in the U.S. Army, I can tell you that if Hasan had served in my old unit, we would have gotten rid of him long before he went Jihad.

I recall a black soldier in my platoon who was a member of “The Nation of Islam” - this was back glory days of reverse racism in 1970s in Germany - who got on every one’s nerves because of pronounced racism, bad attitude and bad mouthing the Army.

As his platoon sergeant, I felt that I couldn’t get rid of him by directly attacking his racism and so forth, but what I did do was “Closely Supervise” him to make him a “Better Soldier.”

After a few weeks of Sergeant Ronbo’s close supervision, the troop got drunk and went AWOL. Then I had him! There was no way he could fight AWOL, you’re either on time and on duty or not.

When he finally returned to post after several weeks, I wrote him up, marched him in front of the C.O. who had already typed up papers to give him a General Discharge, which the troop quickly signed rather than face a General Courts Martial for desertion.

As is well known in the military, the folks in the medical service get cut more slack than the people out in the combat arms and support troops. Remember MASH? It was such a successful comedy because of the grain of truth about the Medics - They do great work but they aren’t big on discipline and their commanders will ignore many sins against the military that would get someone kicked out of the Service for exactly the same offense - especially in the combat arms.

I recall being in the 97th General Hospital in Frankfort with a very bad case of the flu in 1976 and was well taken care of by the docs - but I noticed they turned a blind eye for the fact that their Medics needed haircuts, pressed uniforms and shined shoes. These small items are all indicators of bad discipline, low morale, and potential serious problems.

pieces like this may be fabrications from whole cloth. NY Times is targeting a certain conclusion/attitude in the piece, and the attributed quotes are mostly likely just whatever was needed to make their point. If they are smart, they did get a guy by that name in the army to go along, rather than make that up too.
