In a case that raises questions about online journalism and privacy rights, the U.S. Department of Justice sent a formal request to an independent news site ordering it to provide details of all reader visits on a certain day.
The grand jury subpoena also required the Philadelphia-based Indymedia.us Web site "not to disclose the existence of this request" unless authorized by the Justice Department, a gag order that presents an unusual quandary for any news organization.
Kristina Clair, a 34-year old Linux administrator living in Philadelphia who provides free server space for Indymedia.us, said she was shocked to receive the Justice Department's subpoena. (The Independent Media Center is a left-of-center amalgamation of journalists and advocates that according to their principles of unity and mission statement work toward "promoting social and economic justice" and "social change.")
The subpoena (PDF) from U.S. Attorney Tim Morrison in Indianapolis demanded "all IP traffic to and from www.indymedia.us" on June 25, 2008. It instructed Clair to "include IP addresses, times, and any other identifying information," including e-mail addresses, physical addresses, registered accounts, and Indymedia readers' Social Security Numbers, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, and so on.
"I didn't think anything we were doing was worthy of any (federal) attention," Clair said in a telephone interview with CBSNews.com on Monday. After talking to other Indymedia volunteers, Clair ended up calling the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco, which represented her at no cost.

Papers please....
Liberal BS web site. Full of misinformation.
I think it is wrong, but I find it ironic that a socialist site would get hit up by a socialist administration.
Welcome to your brave new world, lefties.
Did a search. The title did not come up because the poster added a word to the original title.
The subpoena was dated mid-2008, so it was a different socialist administration.
Makes you wonder what was suppose to happen on June 24th that the DOJ wanted all possible info on people visiting the site the next day?
We’re next. I’ve got dibs on the top bunk.
Plausible deniability is all we will be left with soon.
The gov thinks it has a right to all data for any reason.
Encrypt, delete and shred (better to do a wet grind)
They will get around to FR, count on it.
I cant stand you duplicate post nazis. Who the hell cares if there are multiple posts. I imagine you are a grammar nazi too. Enjoy the articles, we are big enough boys and girls to figure out if there are multiple posts.
Maybe you ought to CAREFULLY READ the article, and associated attachments.
If you do, in the eighth paragraph, you will find a link to a document, clearly stating that the subpoena was dated January 23, **2009**. It demanded (as already stated) information from June 25, *2008*

You can’t be serious? You read the article and THIS is what you come up with???
Try again: In the eighth paragraph, you will find a link to a document, clearly stating that the subpoena was dated January 23, **2009**. It demanded (as already stated) information from June 25, *2008*
Link referenced: http://www.eff.org/files/1st-letter-from-eff.pdf
The Constitution is just another piece of paper to these guys.
I don't much care if there are duplicates, myself, but I find it helpful when they are cross-linked so I can read all the comments.
I stand corrected!
Duplicate posts use precious bandwidth.
When the first authored topic appears, many FReepers begin exceptional research - for that reason - a *duplicate post* alert is a good cross reference.
You might have noted - I do not alert the moderators or make abusive comments, nor am I a grammar freak - unless an article contains misleading punctuation. I do not correct other FReepers’ misuse or abuse of the English language. I am much too humble.
The purpose of avoiding duplicate posts is that there already is a discussion by freepers in the other thread, and by duplicating the post you cut off some freepers from the group discussing the post in the other thread.
I think that we aren’t forceful enough on this point. I wish every duplicate was locked, with a link to the original post. That way those who claim that the duplicate “gets the issue back on the front page” would get their way, but the discussion would all be directed to the place where people already spent the time discussing the issue.
Another example of arrogant overreach by an aggressive socialist government in the pursuit of its anti-Constitutional aims. This is simply wrong and unconscionable.
It’s time to take back the country.
??????
***If you have to tell someone you’re “humble”, um, you’re not.****
That is what I keep telling myself - but I don’t listen;)
...and no one’s humility is greater than yours.
Hard to believe ain’t it?
sod;)
Lol. Cute.
It would appear that we have killed this thread.
Semantic Sharia!!!
Good catch, although if the subpoena had been issued by the Bush Admin, all this righteous indignation would disappear like a fart in the wind.
