Payroll employment among for-hire trucking companies in October dropped 0.6 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis from September levels – slightly more than the decline the month before. Employment is down 9.3 percent from October 2008, according to preliminary figures released Friday, Nov. 6, by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With the estimated 7,500 jobs lost in October, the trucking industry has lost more than 91,000 jobs since the end of 2008 – a decline of 6.8 percent. Job cuts since July 2008 – just before the current decline – total 141,400. The BLS numbers reflect all payroll employment in for-hire trucking, but they don’t include trucking-related jobs in other industries, such as a truck driver for a private fleet.

My wife works for a moving company. Things are getting very tough out there. One of their best car carriers recently had to quit due to lack of business.

This doesn’t sound like a recovery to me.

over 250,000 truckers have lost their jobs - and 20,000 trucking outfits closed.

Truckers still driving are hanging on by a thread. The only silver lining? No problem finding a parking space for the night at truck stops.

If it goes much further, and reaches the tipping point, you better have a way to plant a garden, hunt and otherwise provide food. Your supermarket has ONE DAY’s supply for your area. The trucks stop rolling, you'd best be having some food storage on hand.

I am scared silly that the Marxists are just waiting to swoop down and nationalize the trucking industry. It's one of the main tenets of Marxist take over: control the food supply.

We do NOT WANT any attention on the industry from DC - no ‘help’ no bail outs. Stay away from the trucking industry.

Get out of the way of small business and capitalism and let the economy rebound.

But that's not the blueprint, is it?

I read that one of the reason Buffet bought the Burlington Northern Railroad was because gasoline will be going to six dollars a gallon which will bankrupt most of the trucking companies and most shipping will then be done by rail.

Trucks will only be used for local delivery from the trains.

Wrong, Christmas items have already shipped.

These layoffs happened during the month of October not at the end of October. I can't believe that all of the Christmas merchandise was delivered by Oct 1st. If so, then the quantity of Christmas merchandise is down significantly...and thats a bad omen for the Christmas shopping season.

I do believe that it is already been reported that the Chinese volume for the year is way, way, way , down, they try to ship by mid summer.

If you were a purchaser for a big retail company how much would you have bought.

Can you believe that some people still doubt that there is an ongoing conspiracy to destroy America from within? I wonder if they are sure that the sun rises in the East yet.
