Hostage Situation in Jefferson City, Missouri-(Govenor's Building)

JEFFERSON CITY - Portions of downtown Jefferson City are shut down due to a possible hostage situation in a government building.

State employees in the building say police officers are outside patroling the area with assault rifles. The area is locked down. Follow KOMU online and on Twitter for updates.

A viewer called KOMU to say a hostage situation took place in the Governor's Building on Madison Street. Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder is sending accounts from his Twitter account saying snipers are on the roof of the Jefferson Building and negotiators are on the scene to speak with a suspect in the hostage situation.

Possible hostage situation reported; helicopter called in

Capitol and Jefferson City Police and other law enforcement agencies were called to the Governor Office Building shortly after 10 a.m. today for a reported hostage situation.

A helicopter was called in, and was circling the block above the hotel.

Streets in the area were blocked, and people walking in those blocks were ordered into buildings or out of the area.

No other details were available.

JEFFERSON CITY - City police, state Highway Patrol officers and Cole County Sheriff’s deputies, some armed with assault rifles, have surrounded a state office building at 200 Madison St. across the Governor’s Mansion here.

Officials declined to immediately discuss why the law enforcement officers were there, but an employee in the building said workers were told that it involves a hostage situation.

Lewis Mills, of the state’s Office of Public Counsel, said at about 10:15 a.m, an intercom message told everyone in the building, at the corner of Capitol Avenue and Madison Street, to stay in their offices. “We heard that there is a hostage situation on the fifth floor,” he said. “The whole area is crawling with police.”

The entire fifth floor of the building is used by the state Public Service Commission, which regulates investor-owned electric, steam, natural gas, water and sewer and telephone companies.

Helicopters circled over the building. Traffic through much of downtown Jefferson City is being blocked off as officers continue to patrol the area. Workers in the building in question, which has been locked down, could be seen looking out of office windows. At least one other building in the immediate area was also locked down as a precaution, authorities said.

Officials said the governor was not in the mansion at the time. Police said more details would be released soon.

One of the theories of the OKC bombing (which could have some merit) is that the ATF/FBI were planning to ‘sting’ McVeigh and company prior to the act, but screwed up royally.

A similar sting happened recently in Illinois (I think) but this time the FBI made sure the bomb materials were inert.

I expect that the FBI is tracking many potential terrorists, and I fear that PC BS causes a level of hesitation to act that will result in more acts like this.

My husband and I have been discussing moving to Missouri in a few years.

We would live near Jefferson County. My husband is a licensed reactor operator and the Nuke plant he’s looking at is near there.

How sad that even in states like Missouri radical muslims have a foothold. When will this country wake up?
