RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil's two largest cities have been hit by a massive blackout that has also affected other parts of Latin America's largest nation.
Media reports say problems at a huge hydroelectric dam are to blame for the electrial outages affecting large parts of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and other cities in several states.

My thought exactly. Crime in Rio is atrocious. A blackout is an opportunity to that element.

My thought exactly. Crime in Rio is atrocious. A blackout is an opportunity to that element. I took a 4 hour tour of a National Park near Rio a few years ago.Beautiful scenery....but,at one point our guide pointed out a "favela" (slum) on the side of a nearby hillside and said that it was so dangerous and violent that the "army* wouldn't even enter it during *daylight* hours.

Free Republic had this posted two hours ago but one of the moderators had to be a princess and pulled it leaving a two hour void in this story.
Someday we will see an EMP detonated and this is how it will first unfold. It’s a absolute shame that one moderator will not like the post and pull something that could be earth shattering.

Last few black outs (ED. racist) power outages have been do to computer hacking. I wonder if these are as well?

Oh, that really makes me wanna book my flight for the Olympics./sarcasm It's a breathtakingly beautiful city...just about the most beautiful place I've ever seen. But my understanding is that it's also breathtakingly dangerous.
Although I survived two visits.
To: uncbob
Yes, they are. On a journalist trip to both cities, we were warned to not wander by ourselves, even in the daytime. It was too dangerous. In particular, Sao Paulo has graffiti absolutely everywhere. In the city is one of the largest fleets of private helicopters in the world. It is how the execs get to work because it is too dangerous to drive.

I thought it was ironic that 60 Minutes did a piece on this subject this past Sunday. That the easiest way to conquer a country quickly is to turn off the grid.
In less than 6 weeks, there would be anarchy and societal breakdown.
People will be eating their neighbors.

Huh- just days after 60 Minutes said Brazil had had blackouts a few years back due to hackers. Probably just a coincidence, but still...

My 1 Terabyte hard drive from western digital is a “green” drive. It runs much slower than any other drive as to not give off too much heat, and parks its head every 8 minutes (not good). Thanks to the tree nazis.

At least they drill for their oil. Obama is rapidly “Building a bridge to Brasil”. Sadly, it leads to the favelas.

Those are the worst slums I have ever seen pictures of or read about. Id rather be stranded in the Congo.I've been through favelas in Santos East of Praia Grande in the state of Sao Paulo. Not overrun with gangs, but I was with bunch of Brasilians when we went through it. We had to go through the favela to get to a mountain trail that lead to a "secret" beach. Saw some of the biggest spiders I could ever imagine, they looked like special affect stage props.
