Salt Lake OKs Gay Rights Ordinances Mormon church — which opposes same-sex marriage — backs laws

SALT LAKE CITY - With a historic endorsement from the Mormon church, the Salt Lake City Council unanimously passed a pair of ordinances making it illegal to discriminate against gays.

Tuesday's action was the first time the Utah-based church — which has been steadfast in its opposition to gay marriage — has publicly supported gay rights legislation.

"The church supports these ordinances because they are fair and reasonable and do not do violence to the institution of marriage," Michael Otterson, the director of public affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saintssaid.

...I do not agree with Mormons on theological matters, but as everyday citizens, Mormons (rarely drink, smoke or swear, strong family values and best preparers for emergencies) are an asset.

Jesus gave a great compliment to the outward "assets" of legalistic Pharisees when he said that unless your righteousness exceeded that of the Pharisees & the teachers of the law, "you will certainly NOT enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matt. 5:20). Yet, later, in Matthew 23, Jesus said:

25"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. 27"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. 28In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

Are you saying Jesus' emphasis is to only look upon the outward assets? If so, the Pharisees & the teachers of the law passed your standards w/flying colors and Jesus was mistaken to "diss" them.

Mormons (rarely drink, smoke or swear,...
(Well, so far that describes my pets, too)
...strong family values...
(like eternal polygamy, or the belief expressed by Lds apostle Bruce McConkie in his book carried in most Mormon stores that the Mormon jesus would re-institute earthly polygamy upon his return?)
...and best preparers for emergencies) are an asset.

(Well, kudos to that, but this also describes a decent number of secular govt folks who also take their 10% from folks)

Bottom line, hey, if you're auditioning for godhood, which temple Mormons are, you better be on your best outward behavior.

The Church is interested in protecting the sanctity of marriage, not in promoting discrimination.

So forcing a retailer to say, higher an open cross-dresser, is part of your "anti-discrimination" campaign?

I have ZERO WAY OF KNOWING if a person is homosexual unless they intend for me to know -- and that is not the case with race, and may or may not be the case with disability.

Good point. Often missed. The homosexual community used to argue that folks should stay out of their bedroom. It's their "privacy." (For the past 15 years or so, they've constantly been bringing their bedroom into the workplace & everywhere else)

The mormons just love that deviant sex stuff....

They have it in their doctrines ...

Acoording to D&C 132 a guy cant leave Earth without it...

By giving homosexually a pass, the mormons think they can phase back in their beloved “first principal” of wholesale adultery and wife swapping called polygamy...

I’m happier having a Mormon missionary appear at my door than a Jehovah’s Witness.

Both are considered cults by Christians.

I am an evangelical Protestant. I do not agree with the LDS theologically, but I do agree with you that some main stream religious members have anti Mormon sentiments (unfortunately it also includes members in my denomination).

They merely reflect the official views of your church in regards to Mormonism, which church do you belong to?

Collateral damage. Any mud a certain clique here can splatter against the wall hoping it sticks on Romney, they throw.

"One issue I want to clarify concerns President Clinton’s “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue” military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation’s military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share."
Sincerely, Mitt Romney

I see no logical reason to discriminate against gays based on housing and employment. If a couple of guys want to rent my rental property, I'm happy to rent it to them. If a couple of gay guys want to buy the house next door, I have no problem with that either. If the gay guy is the best salesman I can find, I'll jump at the chance to hire him. There is just no reason to discriminate in these areas.

You are changing the subject, no one cares about your personal views, they care about you forcing them to comply with your personal views in their lives too.

So the anti-Mormon sentiment here is all due to people that fear Romney will be the next RNC. Or at least fear he will run and siphon physical conservative votes. I've got to say that is quite a poor reason to smear a religion.

Shoot, when Catholics had a problem with pedophiles, I defended the church as a whole even when many Catholics would not. When people attack southern baptists for being so vocal I defend them as well.

As far as Romney goes, he will only get my vote if he is the Republican nominee. Palin for president. I already have the bumper sticker.

That is one of the many reasons I hope he is never the Republican nominee. That is one man's opinion. It is an opinion I cannot support.

However, it also shows that Mormons are not the single minded group people accuse us of being. It goes from the left (Harry Reid...choke...how is he still considering himself Mormon.) To the center (RINO Romney...conservative on some issues too liberal on others.) To Glenn Beck (Obviously conservative.)

Just as other religions have members who are obviously left to those who are very conservative Mormons are more independently minded than many believe we are.

Thank you, Colo! I feel like such a lone voice sometimes; nice to know that I'm not alone. This whole "gay rights" thing is neither about homosexuality nor about "rights." It's about open homosexuality and denying the rights of free people to peacefully reject it in their business, social, and private lives.

For example, parents have a God-given right to discriminate against openly gay men as leaders of their kids' Boy Scout troops; Mitt Romney is one who would deny them that right. Zero rights are bequeathed and essential rights are DENIED when it comes to "gay rights."

You sound like a cheap salesman trying to spin everything into a pro Mormonism sales pitch. Romney is a golden boy of the Mormon leadership.

Yep. Romney and Obama supporters are kindred spirits in that Obama's supporters attribute dissent to racism, and Romney's supporters attribute dissent to religious bigotry. It's a convenient way for them to avoid the truth that the opposition is based on objections to their politics, not their race or religion.

Amen!

Disagree with Mitt? You MUST be anti-Mormon!
Object to open homosexuality? You MUST be anti-Mormon!

:::sigh:::

I’m sure there are many who like Romney. I do not see him as my first choice, he is a low mid-tier choice for me. Palin, Jindal, Thompson...Judge Roy Moore (dreaming)

And what do you mean by the Mormon leadership? The Mormon prophet and apostles? If so I doubt it.

If you mean businessmen with money and influence like Stephen Covey, Larry Miller’s family, the Mariotts, and Huntsman I would probably agree with you. There are MANY big businessmen who are Mormon throughout the country. I can see why they would like him.

And nope no salesman. Just someone expressing an opinion on a website like everyone else.

Yes, the private meeting with "the Prophet" and the leadership, seeking approval for his Presidential run.

The "Prophet's" words remain secret but the Mormons were told that he had won approval of the "Prophet" for his candidacy.

Actually the non-mormons realize that the mormon Anti-Christtian crowd are just cozying up to the homosexuals so that their own deviant sex doctrines can be introduced without too much trouble...

Kind of a mutual back scratching...

The past backlash at the hypocracy over Prop 8 taught the mormons that they need the homosexuals if they are ever going to have their wholesale polygamy out in the open again...

I can see states rights on this one...

The mormons are still trying to make their polygamy acceptable to the mainstream...

But they’ll start in UT where they reign as a theocracy..

D&C 132 was never rescinded and they need to practice the first principal of polygamy in order to go to their mormon after life...

This has nothing to do with Romney and everything to do with their own religion...

No multiple sex pasrtners, no godhood..

The mormons have a long history of doing what is necessary to get what they want...

The end justifies the means...
