House Race May Split Black Vote
Politico ^ | 8/05/09 | Alex Isenstadt

Illinois’s 7th Congressional District has long been represented by an African-American, but there’s now widespread worry in Chicago’s black community that that could soon change.

With Democratic Rep. Danny Davis signaling he’s ready to step down from the House after seven terms to run for president of the Cook County Board next year, there’s a real possibility that a non-African-American candidate could win the seat.

“I think there is always that concern,” said Richard Boykin, a former Davis chief of staff who is mentioned as a possible contender. “It’s a fear that a lot of people have.”

“There’s great concern,” said Tommie Simmons, a black community activist in Chicago.

Talk that the seat could flip to a nonblack candidate signifies a stunning political turnabout. Chicago’s black community sees Davis’s district, stretching across the city’s downtown Loop and West Side, as its own.

Cardiss Collins — the first African-American woman to represent a Midwestern congressional district — held the seat for 24 years, succeeding her husband, George Collins, who died in a 1972 plane crash.

But with so many black pols expressing interest in succeeding Davis, there’s talk of a splintered African-American vote — a scenario that could hand the election to a white candidate.

Already, the list of potential black candidates includes Boykin, Deputy Cook County Recorder of Deeds Darlena Williams-Burnett, state Sen. Rickey Hendon and state Reps. Karen Yarbrough, LaShawn Ford and Deborah Graham.

Just one non-African-American — Alderman Bob Fioretti — is widely mentioned as a prospective candidate.

“If you get 10 African-American people running for Congress and one white person, the white person can win,” said Boykin.

“Just imagine eight African-Americans running and one white person running — that could happen,” added Simmons.

Racism is shamelessly alive and well in Chicago. Can you even begin to imagine the lawsuits if these comments had been made in reverse? Consider an identical news article, allowing for a reversal of race:

Illinois’s 7th Congressional District has long been represented by a Caucasian, but there’s now widespread worry in Chicago’s white community that that could soon change.

With Democratic Rep. Graham Cracker signaling he’s ready to step down from the House after seven terms to run for president of the Cook County Board next year, there’s a real possibility that an African-American candidate could win the seat.

"I think there is always that concern,” said Walt Whitey, a former Cracker chief of staff who is mentioned as a possible contender. “It’s a fear that a lot of people have.”

There’s great concern,” said Henry Honky, a white community activist in Chicago.

Talk that the seat could flip to a black candidate signifies a stunning political turnabout. Chicago’s white community sees Cracker’s district, stretching across the city’s downtown Loop and West Side, as its own.

“If you get 10 Caucasian people running for Congress and one black person, the black person can win,” said Whitey.

“Just imagine eight Caucasians running and one black person running — that could happen,” added Honky.

But if I’m concerned a BLACK may get the seat, that makes me a RACIST, right??

Welcome to bizzarro planet. How long until we have to wear a yellow star, too?

Happened here in the 9th district here in TN. Harold Ford, Jr left to run for the Senate and the large number of blacks candidates diluted the vote putting in Steve Cohen, a white Jewish democrat in 2006.

Got re-elected in 2008 because of the piss poor candidates again, but is almost sure to lose in 2010 in ex-Memphis mayor Willie Herendon. Unless ole Willie gets indicted before then.

Republicans or conservatives don’t stand a chance here, unfortunately.

Whites who vote for White people are “racist”.

Blacks who vote for Black people are “equalitarian”.

Any Questions?

Do these people who are “racists” not care about MLK’s dream? or is it only us “non racists” who look at character and not skin color?

Does this mean if you aren’t “black” and live in the district, that they don’t give a hoot about you?

Herrindon uses the same tactics of southern white racist politicians of the 1900-1950’s era. Nobody points out the fact that Willie has sunk to that level.

If they are convinced that you are supporting them, you get some special consideration as long as their agenda is not at risk.

Feeding into this is the ridiculous way Congressional districts are drawn up. The 7th includes downtown Chicago, high-rises etc., and the west side out into the western suburbs like Maywood. The demographics are very different across that district, race aside.

When are you going to learn, you racist pig, that it is impossible for blacks to be racist? Only the oppressive, capitalistic, running dog, warmonger, white power structure can be racist.
I believe that you need to spend some time in a “re-education” camp, er, I mean campus.

Black racists marxists worried about a White marxist taking “their seat” this should be fun to watch.
Either way the winner will be an anti American scumbag, but it might make good theater.

I live in the 7th at the west end. If I moved 1/2 mile farther west I would be out of the 7th and out of Cook County. There is absolutely no hope of my views being fairly represented.
