CDC: 3,900 Americans Dead From H1N1 in Six Months
Foxnews.com ^ | 12 NOV 2009 | Reuters

H1N1 swine flu killed an estimated 3,900 Americans from April to October, U.S. health officials said Thursday.

Better estimates show that the pandemic of flu has infected an estimated 22 million Americans and put 98,000 in the hospital, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Of these totals, children account for 8 million of the infected, 36,000 of those in hospital and 540 deaths.

Yeah, they want people to get the Islamist terror attacks off their minds, and Obama is making us less safe, so jin up the flu thing again.

How can these numbers be right? They can’t. In July they said not to bother to confirm if it’s Swine or not.

40,000 usually die each flu season. Well this flu season is already months longer than normal.....but that increases the numbers for this ‘MILD’ flu, eh?

They admit that they’ve stopped testing for actual H1N1. There is no way that I’ll ever believe the CDC on anything. They have become a political shill instead of a medical benefit. A bunch of hacks.

I know two people in the hospital now with pneumonia from H1N1. That’s unusual because I am the last to know anything. If my wife died, I’d probably be the last person to know about it.

The number 39,000 or 36,000 , or 32,000 comes from one man.

How does the CDC come up with 34,000 more flu victims? The number comes from a 2003 study led by William W. Thompson.

Death Rate of Regular Seasonal flu and Swine Flu compared

In 2003 the CDC starting claiming that 36,000 people a year died from regular flu. This number is constantly compared to the current pandemic to persuade people not to “panic” or be concerned. Where did this number come from?

According to twenty years’ worth of “cause of death” reporting data from the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, influenza is the official cause of death for an average of 1,263 people in the United States each year. Indeed, the CDC’s most recent official tally of death by influenza indicates that only 849 people died of influenza in 2006. These very low numbers would seem to contradict the often cited figure of “36,000 flu-related deaths per year” in the United States, which appears on the CDC’s own web site.”

The 36,000 number comes from statistical modeling; comparing pneumonia or other similar deaths in the winter and summer. It is not derived from numbers of people known to have died from flu, or people tested for flu, or even generalized lists of people dying from flu. Additionally, 95% of flu deaths are of people above the age of 65, and most are even older. They are people who are already near death from others causes, seem to get sick with “something” and die.
On the other hand, the people really dying from swine flu are mostly younger people, many of who are perfectly healthy. It is true that swine flu is easier to catch as no one has ever had it before and therefore has no immunity to it.

Here’s a quick ‘snapshot’ of the numbers though.
http://www.lungusa.org/site/c.dvLUK9O0E/b.4061173/apps/s/content.asp?ct=67648

CAUSE OF DEATH INFLUENZA

1979 604
1981 3,006
1983 1,431
1985 2,054
1987 632
1989 1,593
1991 1,137
1993 1,044
1995 606
1996 745
1997 720
1998 1,724
1999 1,665
2000 1,765
2001 257
2002 727
2003 1,792
2004 1,100
2005 1,812

Apparently 36,000 influenza deaths per year in the U.S.A. is a myth that has been repeated so often it has been accepted as fact. However, according to the CDC’s own data, they can only confirm an average of 1,263 deaths due to influenza per year from 1979 through 2006.

This seems like a pretty fair account of how the CDC got caught up with the 36,000 figure.

http://www.slate.com/id/2218367/pagenum/all/

This is from the CDC’s website. So when someone quotes 36,000 deaths send them here:

How many people died from flu during the 2007-08 season?

Exact numbers of how many people died from flu this season cannot be determined. Flu-associated deaths (which have laboratory confirmed influenza), are only a nationally notifiable condition among children; however not all pediatric influenza deaths may be detected and reported and there is no requirement to report adult deaths from influenza. In addition, many people who die from flu complications are not tested, or they seek medical care later in their illness when flu can no longer be detected from respiratory samples. However, CDC tracks pneumonia and influenza (P&I) deaths through the 122 Cities Mortality Reporting System. This system collects information each week on the total number of death certificates filed in each of the 122 participating cities and the number of death certificates with pneumonia or influenza listed as a cause of death. The 122 Cities Mortality Reporting system helps gauge the severity of a flu season compared with other years. However, only a proportion of all P&I deaths are influenza-related and, as noted, most flu deaths are not lab confirmed. Thus, this system does not allow for an estimation of the number of deaths, only the relative severity among different influenza seasons. For the 2007-08 season, the proportion of deaths due to pneumonia and influenza was higher than the previous two years, but was similar to the 2004-05 season.

www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/season

In the U.S.A. the official flu season is six months long. Is that about right? So, if we really did have 36,000 annual deaths from “seasonal” influenza, that would be an average of 200 flu deaths per day for six straight months. Statistically, some days at the beginning and the end of the flu season might have zero deaths and some days at the peak of the season might see several hundred deaths. Wouldn’t several hundred flu deaths in a single day be newsworthy?

They have to estimate deaths, even though I assume dead people stop moving and are at some point buried. They may still vote Democrat, but they do stop moving, but I digress.

Yet they can say with absolute certainty that the stimulus package has SAVED or created 640, 532 jobs or whatever # they use.

Actually alot of h1n1 deaths aren’t being reported.

Here is an interesting article attesting to that fact....

L.A. County’s Swine Flu Victims: Death Certificates Tell the Stories Of A Ravaging Virus

Nov 2009 - by Callie Schweitzer - Neon Tommy...online publication of the Annenberg School of Journalism - excerpts

“Neon Tommy analyzed the death records and interviewed family members, public health officials and doctors to see what the dozens of deaths suggest about the patterns of the illness and who remains most at risk. In several cases, the families we spoke with said they did not know their relatives had died of swine flu until we told them. In these cases, county officials said the diagnoses had been made after doctors filled out the death certificates, and that it is not the county’s responsibility to notify family members. Nearly half of the death records do not list swine flu as a cause of death.

In a typical flu season, about 1,000 people usually die in Los Angeles County; 36,000, nationwide. But up to 70 percent of the victims usually suffer from preexisting conditions that put them at risk. Our study of the 44 swine flu victims showed this virus behaves differently — the number of people with such conditions was equal to those without such ailments; preexisting conditions included diabetes, renal failure, obesity, hypertension and lupus, among others.

... swine flu in L.A. County has not been predominantly killing people with troubled health histories. A closer look at the 44 certificates showed the contrary — the two categories were equal; 22 had preexisting conditions, and 22 had no preexisting conditions listed...Flu season normally begins in the cooler months of October and November, but swine flu has proved to be different — thriving in warmer temperatures, Lopez said.

“We have a virus that does very well in warmer months and is being transmitted pretty efficiently because of such low immunity,” he said. “It’s not very well understood that this virus has been able to sustain itself ever since it was introduced in April and May.

Reminds me of an article I read some years ago about some place in Africa (it may have been Nairobi, Kenya) where the medical examiner's office routinely listed "HIV" or "AIDS" as the cause of death for auto accident victims -- because inflating the AIDS death toll brought more money from the United Nations, World Health Organization, etc.

End Of Day Summary for Monday, November 9, 2009 (FluCount.org): Over the past 7 days, 656 new swine flu deaths have been reported around the world, a 22.6% increase over the number of confirmed deaths the week before. With an average of 93.7 deaths per day, the past week was one of the deadliest yet.

The United States topped the list this week, with a record 250 new deaths this week - a 27% increase over the number of US deaths the week before. With 41 states (and Puerto Rico) reporting new deaths this week, H1N1 is showing no signs of a slowdown in the US. Texas leads the list this week, with 28 new deaths being reported. Arizona and California follow, each reporting 17 new deaths. Ohio confirmed 15 new deaths, more than tripling the total number of deaths they had the week before. Additional deaths were reported in the following states: MI (12), NC (12), VA (11), FL (10), CO (9), IA (9), NY (9), IL (8), TN (8), WA (8), IN (6), MN (5), MT (5), OR (5), PA (5), KY (4), NM (4), SC (4), SD (4), WI (4), KS (3), OK (3), LA (3), MS (2), NE (2), NV (2), UT (2), WY (2), AK (1), AL (1), CT (1), DE (1), GA (1), ID (1), ME (1), NJ (1), RI (1), WV (1). Two deaths were also confirmed in Puerto Rico.

After The United States, Mexico confirmed the most casualties with 63 new deaths during the past week. The death toll in Canada is increasing rapidly as well, with 27 new deaths being reported, for an increase of 27% in just one week. India also confirmed 27 deaths, one fewer than last week. The death rate in India has been trending downward. Mainland China reported 23 new H1N1 deaths, while Italy reported 22 - nearly tripling their count in just a week. Peru added 18 new deaths, while the count in Ukraine nearly doubled, with 17 new deaths. Ukraine is reporting many pneumonia-related deaths, some stemming from H1N1, and some stemming from other sources. FluCount will keep a close eye on the situation in Ukraine as it unfolds. Deaths continue to mount in The United Kingdom, where 16 more deaths were reported. Turkey reported 14 new deaths, now having 160% more deaths than they had one week ago. France reported 13 new deaths, while Iran reported 11 new fatalities - increasing their death toll by 50%. Additional swine flu deaths were reported in: Spain (10), Japan (9), South Korea (8), Afghanistan (8), Argentina (7), Ecuador (7), Russia (7), Syria (6), Netherlands (5), Kuwait (5), Colombia (5), Chile (4), Saudi Arabia (4), Finland (4), Ireland (4), Germany (3), Greece (3), Vietnam (3), Serbia (3), Jordan (3), Iraq (3), Venezuela (2), Thailand (2), Hong Kong (2), Mongolia (2), Moldova (2), Qatar (1), Yemen (1), Oman (1), Hungary (1), Norway (1), Bulgaria (1), Belgium (1), El Salvador (1), Sweden (1).

In addition, the following four nations confirmed their very first swine flu deaths: Belarus confirmed 20 fatalities, while Pakistan, Slovenia, and Austria each confirmed 1 swine flu death.

New To List: Republic of the Congo and Armenia both confirmed their first swine flu cases.

A few years ago, I was asked to help CDC develop a crisis management training program. Of course, the focus was on H5N1, the bird flu and the effect that a pandemic of H5N1 would have on the county. They had some very interesting models of H5N1 propagation and could run a large number of scenarios to simulate an outbreak.

In order to develop a training program, I looked at CDC’s existing disease reporting mechanisms and processes. I was appalled at what I found. In addition to mortality reports, the CDC receive admissions reports from most, but not all US hospitals. This reporting system suffers from the current use of telegraph and morse code to transmit information. It looks like it was designed in that era and has only reclutantly come up to the internet era.

These reports are not real time, and when received are suspect at best. Hospitals voluntarily self report and they make the call for reason for admission and disposition of patients. Infectious disease reporting was probably better in the 1920’s than it is today.

If the CDC is using statistical models (probably what they are doing, I’ve seen the models so I know they exist), that data is probably just as reliable as the accual data reported by hospitals and state/local health agencies. Bottom line is: I doubt that they have the slighest clue what the real number should be.

New blog:

If you aren’t dead, please answer the phone

Director Frieden of the CDC likes phone surveys. He relies on them for determining how many people have been infected with the new H1N1 despite clear-cut evidence that phone surveys are worthless for this purpose. The number infected is the denominator used when calculating the case fatality rate. The numerator is the number dead. Turns out, Dr. Frieden has found a way to calculate this number, also from phone surveys:

From the CDC Weekly 2009 H1N1 Flu Media Briefing, November 3, 2009:

Joanne Silberner: Thanks. You mentioned before the idea that half the people with asthma once they’ve gotten sick have not come in. Where does that number come from?

Tom Frieden: this is from telephone survey day that that we have. We call randomly households. We identify a subset of people who have had influenza-like illness in the previous 30 days. Then for the subset we ask a series of questions about what conditions they have and what they did to seek care. We don’t know what the baseline is for that. We haven’t asked that survey, that question on that widespread basis before. We know we would like more people to seek care if they have an underlying condition with flulike illness.

Joanne Silberner: From the survey you don’t have a sense of what happened to them because you didn’t seek care. You know that from other information.

Tom Frieden: They were still answering the phone and answering our questions a few weeks later. In that regard, we think nothing terrible happened.

In other words, because they were able to answer the phone, they weren’t dead. Really? Did they all answer the phone? Every single one? Beause that would be really incredible. No-one went on vacation. No-one went out to dinner. No-one went to a movie. They all just sat home every night waiting for the CDC to call them again. Dr. Frieden must have found the most cooperative bunch of phone survey respondents, ever.

There are lots and lots of problems with phone surveys. Anyone who follows politics knows that such surveys can yield widely varying results. Just ask Matt Drudge. Anyone who uses phone surveys should know what they can and cannot be used for. I’d really like Nate Silver’s opinion on this, but I’m pretty sure that phone surveys are not a valid way to determine how many people have died of pandemic flu.

But then, I’m not an epidemiologist, so what do I know.

Not that it makes a person dieing of the flu any less tragic, but most of the people I have heard who have died from it usually have other complications with it, like a bad heart or other disease that has already weakened them.

Wouldn’t several hundred flu deaths in a single day be newsworthy?

10,000 people die in the US every day. 100-200 people dying of flu wouldn't be newsworthy any more than 100 deaths in auto accidents every day is.

“— because inflating the AIDS death toll brought more money from the United Nations, World Health Organization, etc.”

And that is what is happening with the “swine” flu as we speak.

Folks need to learn to give their hands a good washing when they come from the outdoors into the home even if it is just from the garden. Also, when arriving at a restaurant, look for the washrooms and wash one’s hands before sitting down at the table as one would do in one’s own home (I hope).

Another rule: Until one gets home and washes one’s hands, don’t stick you fingers in your mouth. Don’t touch your face. Period.

Cleanliness is everything.

They admit that they’ve stopped testing for actual H1N1. There is no way that I’ll ever believe the CDC on anything. They have become a political shill instead of a medical benefit. A bunch of hacks.

Agree. The numbers are total B.S. propaganda...

"Nothing that comes out of the mouth of this government can be trusted. These numbers are incorrect, I’m sure. It’s probably a heck of a lot worse."

I tend to agree with you. There's plenty of people here that believe Obama is inflating the death numbers. Why, is the question I'd ask. How does that benefit him?

Here were are almost 7 months into this and there are SIGNIFICANT problems with the manufacture, distribution and delivery of the flu vaccine. All of this happened entirely under Obama's watch. People are dying because of Obama's incompetence. More deaths don't help him, they hurt him, in my estimation.

3,900 Americans Dead From H1N1 in Six Months

Why isn't the Jurassic media comparing this to Katrina response by the Feds? Huh? Oh, now I get it - the Jurassic media is run by the Government and told what to report on and what not to report.

Kids where I am (the Southeast) are getting clobbered.

Friend of mine who teaches second grade said that she's had 7 out of 20 kids out, routinely, this year. She also said that the other day, the teacher in her classroom next door had 15 out of 22 kids out.

I got my kids the shot - doc said that there'd been "A Much Higher than Normal Rate" of kids coming through her office - and that all of them were symptomatic for H1N1. She's pretty level-headed, and not one for hyperbole.

Plenty of people missing work over this at my company, as well.

Granted, there's lots of hysteria, and most kids are catching the bug, and getting over it. However, this appears to be pretty serious. As serious as all the hysteria warrants? Likely not, but still something to be careful with, IMHO.

100-200 people dying of flu wouldn't be newsworthy any more than 100 deaths in auto accidents every day is.

And yet, here we are talking about 3,900 deaths in approximately 210 days... an average of less than 19 per day.

1. Records indicate that between 4/15/2009 and 5/18/2009 US states reported the deaths of 6 pregnant women. The record for Judy Trunnel indicates that she was the first American to die. Given that she died on 5/5/2009 one might assume the others died between 5/5 and 5/18. The other 5 are listed below (Lines # 2 – 5). Where names are not available, placeholders have been added. Source: http://infectious-diseases.jwatch.org/cgi/content/full/2009/805/1

2. A recent report by the CDC indicates that 28 pregnant women died: The 28 deaths occurred between the emergence of the strain in late April and the end of August. As we do not have 28 women who died between April and August, placeholders have been added. Source: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/01/AR2009100104308.html

3. Additional deaths of pregnant women have occurred since the end of August, the end date of the CDC’s report of the 28 deaths.

The first death of a US citizen with the H1N1 virus (swine flu) has died. Judy Trunnell was 33 years old when she died early Tuesday. She was hospitalized since April 19th in the later stages of pregnancy. After slipping into a coma, she delivered a baby girl via cesarean section. The doctors said that she had chronic medical conditions and that her death was confounded by the H1N1 virus, they are not saying that she died of the virus. 10. 6/17/2009: Amber Hodge, 18 (Cleveland, Ohio) – 8 mths pregnant – baby delivered by emergency c-section
It’s still hard for the family of 18 year-old Amber Hodge to believe that their young, vibrant daughter, died of the H1N1 virus in her eighth month of pregnancy. The Cleveland teen died at Metro Health Medical Center in June, after what she thought was a cold, moved to her lungs, and killed her. “I don’t know where it came from and then I worry about my other kids, I worry about the baby, you know,” said Teresa Armstrong, Amber’s mother. Armstrong is now raising her daughter’s baby girl. Doctors delivered the baby in an emergency c-section while Amber was in a medically induced coma and on a ventillator. She died of H1N1 six days later, without ever meeting her daughter.

Pregnant woman died of H1N1 in June in Cuyahoga County: CLEVELAND — Following Thursday’s news that a pregnant Columbus woman died of the H1N1 virus, Channel 3 has learned that an 18-year-old pregnant woman died here in Cuyahoga County on June 17.Cleveland Department of Health Director Matt Carroll tells WKYC that a positive diagnosis of her cause of death was just reached within the last week, and that the woman died of H1N1.”When the woman was first seen for her illness, a quick test showed negative results for H1N1,” Carroll said. He said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted further tests after her death and concluded that she died from complications of H1N1.Carroll would not identify the woman but said she was a resident of the City of Cleveland and died at a hospital in Cuyahoga County. He did not know whether her baby survived. The confirmation of her death from H1N1 brings to three the number of confirmed H1N1 deaths in Ohio. 13. 6/26/2009: Latoya Riley, 25: (Delray Beach/Palm Beach County, Florida) – 7 months pregnant
5-week-old born before his mother died of swine flu clings to life at Boynton hospital - Palm Beach Post Staff Writer - Tuesday, July 21, 2009 - BOYNTON BEACH — Inside baby Brice’s incubator, nurses have placed a picture of the mother who will never hold him. It’s a child’s school picture, all her aunt could find in the grief-filled days immediately after Latoya Riley of Delray Beach succumbed to swine flu on June 26. Baby James “Brice” Lamarr Baisden Jr. was delivered prematurely on June 17, hours after his mother was admitted to Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach, nearly seven months pregnant and feverish. Riley, 25, fell into a coma that night, and died nine days later. The day care worker had become Palm Beach County’s first victim of the pandemic H1N1 flu strain. She never did manage to hold her little boy, her third son. But her picture watches over him, an angel dressed in a Sunday-school blue dress. Today, baby Brice is doing better and has gained weight, up from 2.7 pounds to over 3 pounds, said Gladys Clinton, the aunt who had raised Latoya. Clinton said it gives her happiness to see her sister’s grandson kicking and stretching his long, thin limbs as he grows stronger under the care of the nurses at Bethesda Memorial’s neonatal intensive care unit. “They told me she had pneumonia. It was only later the health department called and said she had H1N1,” Clinton said, standing next to the baby’s incubator during a visit on Tuesday. Baby Brice clutched her finger. He gazed up at her in recognition, sucking at the tube in his mouth. Source: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/co...xsvc=7&cxcat=6

Now her family is raising questions about whether the hospital was prepared to treat her. Nicole Savoy Packnett died at St. Rose Hospital on July 12. H1N1 Mom Dies Without Seeing Daughter: The woman diagnosed with H1N1 virus, who gave birth while under a medically-induced coma, has died. Katie Flyte, a 27-year-old mother from Puyallup, Wash., passed away on Tuesday from complications from H1N1. Flyte started experiencing flu-like symptoms about six weeks ago, but three different tests missed it. Katie’s husband, Kenny Flyte, appeared on “The Early Show” in July, saying the virus would have been caught if doctors would have used a more expensive test to detect the virus. And he returned to the show Thursday saying “not one doctor threw up a red flag” that his wife should have been tested for H1N1. In recent weeks, Katie developed pneumonia, a complication of the virus, and gave birth to the couple’s daughter by a Cesarean section without knowing it. She died, Kenny said, without once seeing her daughter, Abbey. Kenny said with tears in his eyes, “She’s in a better place now, looking down on (Abbey).”

20. 8/26/2009: Melissa McDaniel, 29 (Modesto, CA) – last days of pregnancy

MODESTO - Another victim of the H1-N1 virus, it killed a Modesto woman just days after she gave birth. 29-year old Melissa McDaniel became the fifth swine flu victim in Stanislaus county this year. Her family says her battle the virus came in the last days of her pregnancy, with her going in and out of the hospital. Her mom, Patricia Shehan says “H1-N1 really messed up her kidneys, her lungs, her heart, and she fought for a month”. Most expectant women deal with a lot of high risk during pregnancy but for Melissa when swine flu entered her body, it provide too much to handle. It even gave her family a learning lesson on how server of a punch H1-N1 can hit the body. Source: http://www.fox40.com/news/headlines/...,1015448.story

McDaniel, 29, of Modesto, died last Wednesday at Memorial Medical Center, six weeks after giving birth to a 7-pound, 3-ounce girl…. According to her family, McDaniel was not visibly ill with the flu before having a C-section July 17. (Her doctors are unable to discuss her case because of patient confidentiality laws.) After returning home, McDaniel had abdominal pain and a cough, and noticed pus from the surgery wound, said her stepfather, Clifford Koen. She was taken back to Memorial, told everything was normal and discharged, Koen said. When she woke up the next morning, she was having trouble breathing and had a fever. She was taken to the hospital again. “She was conscious for maybe two or three days, and then she was in a coma from then on,” Koen said. “We went to see her every day, talked with her and told her the things that were going on at home.” Doctors told the family they suspected a variety of illnesses and then a test came back positive for swine flu, the family said. McDaniel also had an underlying heart condition, the family was told. Her kidneys had failed and her heart was pumping at about 20 percent capacity before she died last week, the family said. A 20-year-old pregnant woman was the area’s first casualty of the H1N1 influenza virus, health officials said Thursday. Kelsey Young died Thursday morning at Doctor’s Hospital, 10TV News reported. Young gave birth to a girl, Ava Renee, during the 32nd week of her pregnancy, a week before she died. The infant was expected to be OK, 10TV’s Maureen Kocot reported. Long said the woman went to the hospital after developing flu-like symptoms and her baby was delivered prematurely, 10TV’s Tanisha Mallett reported. “We can also confirm, thanks to the great efforts of the Ohio Health team, the baby was delivered prior to her death and is reported to be doing well,” Long said.
