The alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks will be tried in a civilian court blocks from where Al-Qaeda hijackers crashed two airliners into the World Trade Center, the US government announced.
Attorney General Eric Holder said prosecutors would seek the death penalty against Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four suspected co-plotters, who are held at Guantanamo Bay but will be moved to a New York prison ahead of their trial.
"After eight years of delay, those allegedly responsible for the attacks of September 11 will finally face justice," Holder said, without giving a date.
"They will be brought to New York to answer to their alleged crimes in a courthouse just blocks away from where the Twin Towers once stood."
Five more Guantanamo detainees, including Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, accused of plotting the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole destroyer off Yemen that killed 17 US sailors, will be tried before military commissions.
The military tribunals were heavily criticized after being set up by former president George W. Bush in late 2001, but have since been reformed to grant defendants more rights to evidence and bar evidence obtained through torture.
The announcement, key to President Barack Obama's plans to shutter Guantanamo by January, was blasted by families of the nearly 3,000 victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
"To allow a terrorist and a war criminal the opportunity of having US constitutional protections is a wrong thing to do and it's never been done before," said Ed Kowalski of the 9/11 Families for a Secure America Foundation.
Peter Gadiel, who lost his 23-year-old son James in the World Trade Center's north tower, accused Obama of trying to establish a "show trial" that would end up being "a circus."

There’s only two motivations for such to be brought before civilian courts.
1. To force the disclosure of classified materials to the prisoners and their lawyers. This allows that classified info to be given over to our enemy, in part or in whole.
2. To grant freedom to the prisoners because it is, all too often, impossible to play the CSI game at point of capture, so no court appropriate evidence can be gathered.
He’s probably just doing this because such cases mean huge ratings for CNN.
We tried using civil courts for terrorists in Canada. Look up “Air India Flight 182” and “trial”; if you want to know how all this is likely to turn out. It ain’t pretty.

You are right and so is Limbaugh, its about putting America on trial, the CIA, letting the world know how the CIA operates, dismantling the CIA and the military. They also run the probability of letting these people walk and subsequent lawsuits.
These should be military tribunals off the soil of America. These guys ate international war criminals and should be tried on that criteria. To bring them into civil courts and apply those laws does not make ANY sense as they never were Americans and never were. These courts and the rules are intended for that. Do we apply the laws of football to baseball? Although they are sports the are different sports and with different rules. To apply the irrelevant rules gives you an irrelevant outcome.
But, I guess if Aliens can have Obama amnesty, so can the Guantanamo boys! And we can have an illegal alien president!!

As the father of 5 adults who were all raised to believe in God & country I can tell you this. We are in the beginning phases of punishment and warnings from God. There are 2 generations of Americans now so addicted to porn, video games and self gratification that they ignore the world around them. My grandchildren will be the 3rd generation and their parents for the most part believe in an America where freedom of perversion is a right. This does not come from them as individuals but from what they perceive as guidance.Print media, Internet and motion pictures are all a constant visual onslaught that has warped their minds. These are good minds with the proper guidance at home but you cannot shut out the worlds influence. The war will have to be felt by these individuals right here at home before they understand the price of not only freedom but moral responsibility.
I heard Mark Levin state in the first hour of his show on the 13th that Eric Holder’s law firm of Covington and Burling (of which he is a senior partner apparently) is in fact representing 17 yemenni (sp?) terrorists and one pakistani terrorist that are currently being held in GITMO.
I suspect this is being done in an effort to get their clients acquitted.

We need to organize all the conservative groupes out there. There are hundreds. Alone they can’t do much , together we would ans a massive group. we need to employ the vERY successful tactics of the left. Strikes, riots , sit in s . There could well be a coordinated terrorist attack on NYC. These accused were in the employ of Osama Bin Laden.

There could well be the assasination of a judge, a juror or a witness.
All of the above would cause a revulsion in Americans like we’ve not seen. Obama has no upsides. Not a one. And there are so many potential pitfalls, he has to be clueless to be doing this.

No way these terrorist get tried in NY, they will get a change of venue. I’ll bet the trials are in Dearborn Michigan. 12 jurors have to convict unanimously, no way thay are convicted on serious charges. Maybe some lessor charges and released with time served. Then they come back and sue the CIA for mistreatment.

The trial probably won’t even begin for a year or so, during which time KSM and his lawyers will be busy digging through our intelligence secrets, assembling their files for the next attack, etc. - but they’ll be doing it out of sight.
In other words, people will have forgotten all about this by tomorrow because they’re not going to actually see anything - such as the trial itself - for quite some time.
Everything Obama has done is like this: a flurry of activity now for something that will take effect in a couple of years (witness the health bill). This gives people time to get upset but at the same time no real focus for their anger, which means that it will have dissipated by the time the event really happens and we will be unable to muster any real resistance to it.
You know, part of me says that Obama would have to be an idiot to think that this wouldn’t hurt him in the 2012 election, but then his friendship with communist terrorists didn’t hurt him either (my country is unrecognizable to me). Plus, he may be expecting that whoever runs in 2012 against him will put up as inept and jaw-droppingly poor campaign as McCain did.
