Howard Kurtz: Glenn Beck Dominating Conversation Without Mainstream Media
Politics Daily ^ | September 14, 2009 | David Sessions

Posted on 11/14/2009 2:15:24 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

In his column in Monday's paper, Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz observes that Fox News personality Glenn Beck is dominating the media conversation -- even to the point of forcing a White House official to resign -- without a bit of help from newspapers, television or other mainstream news sources. "It has become a familiar chain reaction: Talk-show hosts whip up a noisy controversy, which hits higher decibels as it spreads to the establishment media, which costs some unfortunate soul his job," Kurtz writes. "But now the middleman -- the journalistic gatekeepers of yore -- may no longer be necessary."

Kurtz notes that White House green jobs advisor Van Jones, who Beck had relentlessly attacked for his profane comments and conspiracy-theorist past, resigned before the New York Times had run a single story on the conflict. Neither had there been any mention of the story on any of the network newscasts. Beck's ratings have soared to 2.25 million viewers for his 5 p.m. weekday slot in the Fox News lineup, despite losing multiple advertisers over his routinely over-the-top commentary. He deflects criticism by describing himself as a former "dirtbag" and a "clown," but at least this time, he beat the mainstream press to a serious story.

New York Times Managing Editor Jill Abramson said her newspaper was "a beat behind" on the Van Jones story, and that "we should have been paying closer attention."

Talk-show hosts whip up a noisy controversy, which hits higher decibels as it spreads to the establishment media, which costs some unfortunate soul his job," Kurtz writes.

Talk-show hosts tell the inconvenient truth, which resonates with the American people despite the best efforts of the establishment media to downplay it, which costs some Marxist, America-hating, Leftist, Obama hack his job," Kurtz grudgingly laments.

There. Fixed it.

Well, there's good news, Jill. There are at least 40 more Van Joneses out there for you to get the drop on.

Time's a wastin'. Hop to it. Chop, chop.

...every thing they print about an Obama official has to be vetted, reviewed and edited before it can be published..***

The MSM typists have no concept of investigative reporting, vetting or reviewing serious threats to our Republic. They are pathetic and deserve ingnominy.

That's because when they finish vetting this steaming piece of crap and his Chicago mob---there's nothing left to report!

But now it was the National Enquirer that showed John Edwards pecadillos, and talk radio and Matt Drudge

Well said. The New York/Washington DC corridor is actually a foreign occupying power totally divorced from America.

They are the ruling elite on a par with Louis XIV and court. The answer then, and the answer now is GUILLOTINE !

(figuratively speaking...of course :)

Well .. quite frankly .. I believe O’Reilly is just plain jealous of Beck’s popularity. Nothing stinks worse than jealousy.

Now, the two of them are teaming up .. and I suspect O’Reilly believes he can TAME Beck and thereby retain his status as #1.

The American Way of Life is somewhat on its head: we’re afraid and angry and unsure and blah blah blah — but those first few old parchment pages of the American Constitution have withstood attacks by much better men than Obama. Keep the faith!

“without a bit of help from newspapers, television or other mainstream news sources”

I can imagine Kurtz babbling these words as he was being carried off in a straight jacket by men in white coats.

It was Van Jones’ own words that did him in. Beck didn’t have to do anything except show the video clip.

Who was Kurtz referring to when he made his self pitying declaration that “the middleman — the journalistic gatekeepers of yore — may no longer be necessary.” Such journalistic gatekeepers are not only unnecessary, but now that nobody buys his stupid newspaper or pays attention to “mainstream news sources”, they are effectively non-existent. That is, unless he is referring himself, which would make him completely delusional.

... but at least this time, he beat the mainstream press to a serious story.

Being a real "journatist" requires digging, research and verification. When each media source has exactly the same written verbiage on a story, using specific words to slant their articles, it IS noticed and found to be repulsive and insulting to the average American's intelligence (the MSM has been AWOL long enough to warrant distrust by most Americans - witness the lack of audience for those who are smitten with politicians and/or likely on under-the-table government payroll already).

God bless Glenn Beck and AM radio personalities who do their job the old fashioned way - with research, no fear of offending politicians or administrations, and sharing what they've found with us, a listening, watching and reading audience hungry for the truth and tired of corruption and propaganda.

You’re right. Roosevelt was probably far worse, for the simple reason that he had 4 terms. Obama will have 1 term. At most.

"the journalistic gatekeepers of yore" are an urban legend. The press has been morally corrupt and partisan since god knows when. "Yellow journalism" did not begin with the Slimes.

Remember that the Spanish American war was created by the Hearst chain to sell papers. The Slimes colluded with Stalin in the thirties and helped him deny the Gulags, via the tissue of lies of Walter Durante.

"Gatekeepers" my butt.

When these loathsome people talk this way they are simply stroking a self-aggrandizing myth of what "journalist" has typically meant on the national scale.

Thanks, I thought maybe it might just be me because O’Reilly is not my favorite. He’s just too smug and sanctimonous for me.

Now Beck is a different story. My sister and I attended one of his specials this last summer, and we miraculously ended up getting to talk with him and have our picture taken with him.

Beck is the real deal!!

Can you take that idiot Gibson seriously as a journalist?

I turn those people off, they are disgraceful. Either sycophants or purposely ignore politically unfavorable news. Flush his show and anyone who is as intellectually dishonest.

The MSM integrity died with Tim Russert. Part of me really believes that Obozo got in because Russert was not around to steer the MSM.

Sunday mornings are NOT the same without Russert. He's missed.

You know, while reading a recent "New Yorker" slam on Ayn Rand it occurred to me that no one has EVER held up Ayn Rand as an excellent example of writing. She really sucked at it. No one has ever held her up as an example of how to create characters or use grammar or certainly not how to know WHEN TO STOP. LOL.

What she had to say. This is what set Rand apart. Her message. She was the one who had the courage to say it. It occurs to me that while we may think our recent struggle against "the bastards" is new the fact that Ayn Rand was successful tells me that this struggle has been going on a long time. While all the "great talents" in literature that were contemporary were writing Socialist propaganda (for the most part, don't go on about "1984" and "Brave New World") Ayn Rand had the courage to write "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged". All a Hemingway or Steinbeck had to do to push Rand into obscurity was to have done what she did better. No one has.

All a "real journalist" has to do to put an end to Beck is to do what he does better. None will.
