Illinois prison in running to house Gitmo detainees
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | November 14, 2009 | Lynn Sweet

Posted on 11/14/2009 6:48:52 PM PST by topfile

WASHINGTON — A nearly empty state prison in northwestern Illinois has emerged as a possible site to house detainees transferred from the Guantanamo Bay military prison in Cuba, the Obama White House told the Chicago Sun-Times on Saturday.

Gov. Quinn and Obama discussed the federal purchase of the Thomson Correctional Center when Quinn was in Washington on Nov. 4 and visited the White House. Quinn and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) will outline proposals for the future of the prison at press conferences in the Quad Cities, Chicago and Rockford on Sunday.

Durbin’s office has been quarterbacking the potential sale of the prison through a series of meetings between the White House and Quinn, who is looking to generate revenues for the cash-strapped state. State government could realize at least $200 million from a sale.

The Thomson complex is the Illinois Department of Corrections’ newest maximum-security prison. Built in 2001 for $145 million, the 1,600-bed facility has zero inmates. The facility’s minimum-security operation has about 200 prisoners.

-snip-

The closing of Guantanamo has touched off a political storm for Obama, who made shutting the prison in Cuba a signature pledge of his presidential campaign. Obama promised on his first day in office to close the prison in one year, but it has proved more difficult than Obama or his advisors ever contemplated, especially since other nations have balked at accepting detainees.

Holder on Friday, discussing the Guantanamo closure said “I’m not sure we are going to be able to complete that process by Jan. 22.”

Make sure these “special” prisoners get work release and weekends in town.

Wouldn’t having a Muslims only prison be discrimination?

Thomson is on the BNSF's Chicago to Mpls/St Paul main line, within urinating distance of two railroad and three road bridges across the Mississippi, about 8 miles upriver from Lock & Dam 13, and 30 miles up the highway from Cordova and its nuclear power plant. Great vacation spot for jihadis and their visitors.

It is also within an hour's drive to yours truly. Thanks for nothing, Barack.

I don’t want them on US soil, but if it’s gonna happen, northern Illinois (winter) is probably as close to torture for these guys as we can hope for, given that they are used to slightly warmer climates. If we can’t have northern Minnesota or the North Slope, that is.

Then have Sherriff Joe put them in pink boxers and sleep in tents in the winter.

OK, my question to Obama and the lefties is; why is holding the terrorists indefinitely in Illinois better than holding them indefinitely in Guantanamo?

And how is a televised civilian trial that muslims worldwide will watch going to improve their opinion of America? If the terrorists are found guilty, then other terrorists worldwide will say that it was fixed and use it as a recruitment tool. If the terrorists are found innocent, then other terrorists worldwide will hold it up as a win and will use it as a recruitment tool.

Just another stray thought. A lefty judge presiding over a civilian court would always set a criminal free if he hadn't been read his rights. The only reason a lefty judge wouldn't set these terrorists free from the start is because it would look bad for Obama. Lefty judges apply the law to suit their feelings.

Castro could die at any time and the US needs to be there to abort any seeds of liberty. 0bama will hang onto Gitmo until he's sure that Castro's communist successor is in place. Just in case the Cubans get any ideas like Honduras had, about removing dictators. If the new dictator is young and good for decades of tyranny, then yes, 0bama will hand over Gitmo.

I learned of this yesterday at our annual Golden K Chili Day dinner. Carroll County is just West of us (Ogle County). Our county sheriff stopped by for chili and asked our opinion. Boy, did we give him an earful. He’s against it, our congressman, Don Manzullo, is against it (Carroll’s in his district). But I suspect the fix is in. The sheriff’s going to a meeting tomorrow morning with the governor. The governor sees $ signs. All we see is terrorists in our back yards.

One writer on our congressman’s Facebook page said that if they’re housed there, they should make them wear antlers when out in the prison yard. Good idea!

I just heard Glen Beck say Obama wants prisoners released for community service.

Would Obama release the terrorists to integrate them into society and fill spots in his organizing for america, serve.gov, americorp?!?!

Why is Obama talking about both within two weeks? Why would anyone want most felons volunteering? Some of the Volunteers help old people, work in hospitals, work around money.

Oh wait, Obama wants his rathke brothers to work in volunteerism (acorn) and hand them millions in tax funding to steal and launder around. To Obama that system works well. So let’s let prisoners out for volunteering. They will come in handy when I start my army and I need thugs to get out the vote and stand around at the polls with batons.

But there will be a exception, the no insurance buyers will be excluded and must do hard time. This is the way these fascists think. That is my take on it, not Glen’s.

Beck is saying so much is going on now, no one is talking about Obama’s speech to native indian tribes. A speech eerily similar to Van Jones, give them the wealth!

Obama knows he is going down. He will now proceed to throw as much as he can at us at one time hoping to see some of his agenda stick.

I heard two very interesting comments today that got my radar tuned in!

One person said that a lot of people in Illinois would be glad to have the prison come there because it would mean 3000 new jobs for a state that has a lot of unemployed. What do you want to bet those 3000 jobs would all be union, probably SEIU member! Someone needs to ask the question: "how much is it going to cost us to keep these guys in the U.S.?"

Another person said that we had spend 24 billion dollars to remake Gitmo for the muslim prisoners. Now, we will close that and spend no telling how many billion to make this new prison acceptable to the muzzies. And guess what, more union jobs and contracts to do the renovating!
