I vaguely remember reading something about that fact, but I’m curious... in Adams case, did the defendents already confess to the crime, plead guilty, and subsequently ask for their sentences to be carried out?

I doubt it. And the Redcoats couldn’t even claim that they were just following orders, since the captain, who I believe was tried first, was acquitted once it was proved that he had never issued an order to fire.
