HealthWatch: Soy Products And Cancer
CBS ^ | November 12, 2009 | Dr. Holly Phillips

Posted on 11/15/2009 1:59:57 PM PST by Reeses

Once Thought Of As Superfood That Helped Prevent The Disease Is Now Thought Of As Helping Increase The Risk

After 10 years of being touted as "the" superfood, soy-based products are all over the supermarket.

But now new reports link soy to breast cancer.

...

But several new studies suggest that eating a lot of soy -- in particular highly processed soy -- and soy supplements may actually promote the growth of some pre-existing breast cancers, especially in post-menopausal women.

"A higher dose of soy, such as you might see in a diet with supplements, will cause the breast cells to increase their growth rate," said Dr. Michael Osborne, director of breast cancer programs at Beth Israel Medical Center.

Osborne explains when cells begin to increase their growth rate there are greater opportunities for them to grow into cancer.

"The general principle, if soy is good, more is better, is wrong," Osborne said.

I’m usually weary of these types of studies. How many of these soy eating women had other “pre-existing” conditions? If it’s not soy, it’s red meat. This is an attack on successful businesses...plain and simple

Yes to the above and for those who are lactose intolerant. Soy products do not agree with me. Check out the labels there is soy in LOTS of foods.

I recently read this in some materials I was reading on nutrition:

Another nasty culprit is processed soy. This is always a shock to most people (especially die hard vegetarians) who have been falsely led to believe that soy is actually good for you. Well if you lived in Asia you would quickly see that most Asians eat soy in small quantities and in the form of old fashioned fermented soy (such as miso, tempeh, natto, shoyu and tamari) not the processed, toxic soy that is used in so many vegetarian type products and weight loss products on the market today. The worst of today's soy protein products are soy protein isolate, soy protein concentrate, texturized vegetable protein and hydrolyzed vegetable protein. These ingredients are found in everything from shake powders, energy bars and veggie burgers to canned tuna. The worst soy oil products are margarines and shortenings made from partially hydrogenated soybean oil containing dangerous trans fatty acids. So avoid these forms of toxic soy at all costs. Not only will you be saving yourself from a myriad of health problems (like decreased thyroid function and hormone disruption) you will also see a dramatic loss in unwanted body fat.

Next time you're at the store, read some ingredient listings...you'll be shocked at what's listed...soy and soy products are everywhere. Especially, read products that are touted as 'healthy'.

Not really. It’s slipped into a lot of foods you would not expect to find it, protein shakes, ice cream, even some meat products.

Tofu is a fermented soy product and very safe and healthy.

The Agriculture industry has conned everyone into thinking that non-fermented soy is healthy, and unfortunately it's in everything now. Asians don't drink soy milk, and only did in times of famine. Giving soy formula to a baby is the equivalent of giving it 5 birth control pills.

Stay away from it.

Yes. You must be very careful driving down the highway. If you come too close to a soy field, your next car will likely be a volvo, your next computer will be a mac, you’ll be begging for higher taxes, more gov’t intrusion in your life and those around you and you’ll grow a ponytail.

Eat what you like or crave in moderation and all you will have to worry about is your family history.

Tofu is a fermented soy product and very safe and healthy. “

It’s not fermented. It’s made by boiling crushed beans, taking the resulting liquid and adding a salt to it. This causes the suspended solids to congeal.

Sorry about that, boiled or fermented soy products are safe and healthy.

"Soybeans are widely known to contain a gamut of natural toxins - and it makes no difference whether they are organic, "Round-Up Ready", or in any number of modern products (see our GUIDANCE page).

The trouble with modern soy products is that fast industrial processing does not equate to historical methods of fermenting "for two summers" or boiling "for the length of an incense". The method of modern get-rich-quick corporations is simply to leave these well-known natural toxins in our products."

My BIL worked for a company doing research on SOY thirty years ago. Twenty two of the twenty three food scientist said that soy was not healthy for the majority of the American people.....Rather than make this information public, the company fired twenty two of the food scientist and proceeded to to put soy in many products that American consume today.

Ironically I'm completely intolerant of soy products: salad dressing, margarine, creamers, mayo, cheese etc etc. (BIL says there is just one more step to change many of the margarine and cheeses made with soy into plastic. Soy can cause woman not to be able to conceive. Government knows all of this. The research was done thirty years ago.)

HEYY! Yours truly, Darth-to-the-right-of-Atila-the-Hun, is sitting here eating some delicious shrimp stir fry that I just made using soy sauce and hoisin sauce among other things.

The Asians invented a lot of very tasty condiments and sauces. Food ain’t political.

In fact, my stir fry is multi-cultural as it contains some hot Indian curry, Mexican red jalapenos, and German red cabbage. The only problem is that the way I make it, it sometimes cauterizes the oral cavity.

It seems that both fermentation (as in tempeh) and precipitation (as in tofu) get rid of or neutralize the anti-nutrients found in soy. Traditional Asian cuisines use soy only in fermented and precipitated forms. Never raw, never merely "boiled" or "baked" or "cooked," and never as that hideous extruded stuff known as textured vegetable protein (TVP).

I have a bias in favor of whatever people have successfully done for thousands of years that has worked, evidently, to their advantage. That's one reason I favor, for example, male-female marriage over other sexual arrangements. It's sustainable across the generations. It's stood the test of time. It works.

Call me a conservative.

Not sure what you have a against herbs...I love ‘em! And...at the risk of sounding ‘green’ and taking a lot of grief here...I’m starting to purchase more and more organic. I’m tired of ingesting all the crap that’s pumped into beef, poultry and fish. I seriously think it’s having an effect on my health. I’m already on Synthroid for life, I don’t need the hormones they give the animals too. There are some fruits and veggies that I’ll buy organic and some that I’ll just buy ‘regular’. {ok, hang on...I need to go put on my flame-suit}

They have long eaten huge amounts of soy in Asia, but with a difference. Almost all the soy they eat is fermented. Fermenting destroys the plant estrogen that is believed to be behind a lot of the health problems associated with soy.

Fermented, preserved or pickled tofu (doufu-ru, furu, rufu, fuyu, funan) is aged tofu with a soft, creamy texture and an aroma similar to a very ripe cheese.

In case you don’t know, applesauce can be substituted for vegetable oil in a recipe for baked goods. 1/3 c vegetable oil use 1/3 cup applesauce instead. You can’t tell the difference. We only use olive oil for cooking and it doesn’t taste very good in brownies. :)

you shouldn’t have to worry about a flame suit. Just because some liberals do thing for political reasons does not mean it’s a bad idea. Eating healthy and not processed crap is not a bad thing. Same thing as the “going green” ideas of cutting down your energy consumption and the fabric grocery bags. Sometimes a good idea is just a good idea and who cares what others think. :)

I have nothing against anything anybody wants to do, really. It is just that most of the so called traditional cures and health cures that THEY DO NOT WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT, are as old as the history of mankind and most have been disproved time and time again as nothing but money making scams. Herbal remedy's date from history, but it was only after the invention of antibiotics that infections that overpowered the immune system could be cured.
Modern medicines have cured and prolonged life and have only existed for a little less than 100 years, before that herbs and everything else you can name had poor outcome.
The problem is that people want to believe that there is some miracle that some entity is hiding in order to make money off people. It is just like the idea that a bowel movement will make you healthy (Detox) and that crops grow with man-made fertilizers are poison whereas crops fertilized with manure are healthy.
People who believe this crap are suckers.

Here's some more information on oil for the same materials I quoted in post #7:

In general, the two best fats to use for cooking are unrefined coconut oil (for very high heat) and raw organic butter (for medium-high heat; it should not turn brown during cooking). Because they contain high levels of saturated fat, they stay chemically stable up to 375°F. Oils that are low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat, such as olive oil, are best consumed raw (e.g., on salads and vegetables) or used for light sautéing over medium heat. Although coconut oil provides a significant amount of fat and calories, it has been proven to increase the body’s metabolic rate, making it easier to lose weight.

I know you’re going to find it difficult to believe, but butter—at least the raw organic kind—is one of the healthiest whole foods you can include in your diet. Yes, butter contains high levels of saturated fat; but remember, saturated fat is not the culprit behind weight gain and high rates of disease. Trans fats (hydrogenated oils), sugars, and processed grains are the bad guys. Like coconut oil, butter is high in lauric acid, which the body uses for energy. Extra-virgin olive oil is another healthy oil. It is rich in antioxidants, and 1 or 2 teaspoons go a long way (on a salad or in a sauté). When buying olive oil, look for oil that is cloudy (indicating that it has not been filtered) and has a golden yellow color (which means that it was made from fully ripened olives). Extra virgin is best. And, of course, it should be organic.

Oh I am not talking about bottled herbs. I am talking about real growing herbs that no one can make a profit off of. Medicine has its place but that is not our first reaction, it is a last resort. I have cured ear infections with garlic oil ear drops etc. However, I have had to also get an antibiotic for an ear infection I couldn’t get cleared up. Everything has it’s place. Herbs shouldn’t be overlooked, they can have some curative properties without the side effects.

Yes I have read this info before but thanks for posting. We do use real butter instead of margarine or butter subs. My general philosophy is the closer to nature the better. I didn’t say they don’t get sick, I just don’t take them to the doctor for every little thing. I treat them at home. My kids had swine flu two weeks ago. I assume it was swine flu because they were playing with kids that were diagnosed with swine flu. Too many people rush to the doctor for every little thing. But you are right, they aren’t exposed to alot of things going around because they aren’t at school. People tend to keep their children home from church/co-op etc when they know they are sick but alot of people will send their kids to school sick because they have to be at work.
